Starting with DDG-20 to DDG-24 they got the bow sonar dome. Thats why you see the anchor repositioned to the bow vs the side of the hull. Rest of the class has a keel mounted sonar.

Hi Guys,
To add to Robin's post. The late DDG shown must have had its' keel mounted sonar dome removed from the hull bottom, as they don't hang that low.
I have some pics of Barney's sonar domes having been removed, (during her scrapping), and I also have some pics of DDG-22 sinking while being towed to be scrapped, (never scrapped). The DDG-22 sinking pics clearly show the bow mounted sonar dome and its' complementary keel mounted sonar dome; its' position along the keel and distance from the bow is clearly evident. I'll try to post these again. I think I posted them somewhere toward the beginning of this thread.

Tony is correct about the two sonar domes on DDG-22. She went thru
a sonar system upgrade which was called PAIR. Don't have the details
on that system. I am guessing the second, keel-mounted dome added
enhanced listening capabilities. The bow-mounted dome was mainly
used for active search.

When I was aboard ('71 to '74), I worked with the then installed sonar
system called SQS-23G (one large bow-mounted dome).

I also got some Drydock pics from the guy I sat with at the DDG-22 reunion banquet table only 2 weeks ago. His d/d pics have to be seen! I have asked his permission to share publicly, (they were his personal photos), and I have not heard back from him.
I have never seen such clear and large file size pics of the screw/rudders/sonar dome........ever. ...and I've been scouring the web for CFA DDG pics since 2005. The best part about it.......it's DDG-22.

Sad as it is, DDG-22 never met with a scrapyard. Some believe this is a good thing, as the ship is still in one piece; assumed.

My hat's off to the DDG-22 sailors for making me feel so welcome at the ships' reunion.
I was the token, "ship model builder", with my various DDG-22 models in hand. That was quite memorable for me as
the former ships crew were quite interested in my small scale, and not so small scale re-creations of their former home/workplace.

are from an old Newsweek article (I have that around some
place), taken from the tow ship. One way to look at it....she
is eternally underway.

Sure would like to see a future Arleigh Burke class DDG named
after Benjamin Stoddert. Would be a fitting tribute to the
name and legacy.

I'll get some dimensions from my BuShip plans when I get home. The measurement will be from the leading edge of the bow at the w/l going aft to the front of the second sonar dome. I'll post them in scale feet and inches.
Those color profiles are pretty good, as they show ship differences and they even show the amount of bow upsweep and sheer differences between the 2 ships shown; characteristic differences between the earlier and later ships of this class.
In short; all the ships differed in some way.

Measuring from the baseline to the very front of the second sonar dome is 6.77" in 1/96 scale.
That would be 54.16' on the real ship. In 1/350 scale, this is 1.855".
Remember that the baseline is the bottom of the ship going fore and aft. Remember too that the
sonar domes ride deeper in the water than the baseline; same for the screws.
