As a lad ,one of the first naval books I read was "We Captured a U-Boat",the story of the capture of U-505 by the USS Guadalcanal.I`ve always been fascinated by Escort Carriers ,and with the release of the Hasegawa kit of the Gambier Bay,it gave me an oppotunity to add one to my collection.
This is my first build of a Hasegawa warship kit ,and from what I`ve seen I`m impressed.Although the kit and related PE is very expensive(in the UK),I think it`s worth it.
I decided to do a waterline model, and this required the removal of the lower hull.Having done a trial run with the Z-25 removing the lower hull with a circular saw attachment on a Dremel ,I was quite surprised how easy it was.
Also this my first attempt at building a US Carrier,so if I make any cock-ups,please inform me!!
Anyway here goes.

Cheers Phil
Image
The sprues from the kit ,not as many as the latest Dragon kits ,but that may be as well.
Image
The aircraft ,you get three TBM`s ,and six FM-2`s,these are moulded solid ,which I don`t mind ,I prefer them that way.
Image
The ancillary parts ,PE ,decals etc
Image
The hull half is placed in a vice ,and masking tape is used as a guide, then to work with the Dremel!
Image
A large print of the sinking of the Gambier Bay is included,I thought it was a waste of money,I think it`s awful! Much rather have more aircraft

This oughta be awesome! I have always wanted to do a diorama of the Gambier Bay dodging shells with the different color water plumes, thought is would be an eye catcher. Looking forward to updates.

The waterlining has been done,I must have a steadier hand than I thought,`cos the two hull halves stand up by themselves, without any cleaning up!The internal bulkheads have been reduced in size to match the waterline. When this is all put together ,it makes for a very sturdy hull.A w/line plate has been attached to hull, made from 60 thou plastic .

So long ,Phil

It`s painting time, the Guadalcanal was painted in Ms 32/4a,and thanks to a friend I was to get the camo pattern for her,(Thanks Roger!).I used Acrylic paints ,as I`m not too happy with enamels. The brands I used are:
Humbrol acylic primer gray
pale gray= 1part Vallejo # 907 + 1 pt #matt white
Light gray= Polly S USN colors
Haze gray = " " "
Navy Blue= Vallejo #816 Luftwaffe Uniform blue
Deck blue= " #867 Dark blue gray
F/D Stain= " # 900 French Mirage blue

These are the last of my Polly S paints, that`s a shame ,I thought that they were good paints to use. However the Vallejo seem to have filled the gap,and are excellent for hand-brushing and airbrush work,I heartily recommend them. Many thanks to the IPMS USA chapter that has a list of the equivilents for USN colours and other navies of WW2,you`ve done a grand job!
I was a bit worried with some of the demarcation lines being mergered, but after careful work with the airbrush ,it turned out easier than I thought.
Here`s the pics.
Bye Phil

The main hull has been fully painted ,and now I`ll make a start on the seascape, using my usual method.

Image
A sheet of cling-film is securely glue to the base,I use a mixture of PVA ,and CA,which is very strong.I`ve made sure that the glues are only applied in the area inside of the hull
Image
The hull is attached ,using the same combination of glues.
Image
The cling-film is wrapped round the hull, making sure there are no gaps
Image
The wake from the ship is simulated by Das modelling clay, which is allowed to dry
Image
Fine-surface Polyfilla is used to make the rest of the sea.

Next up is to do the most difficult part ,and that is to paint it ,and try and make it look "right"

Bye
Phil

Seascape is looking good so far phil, it's always enjoyable watching you create one.

I`ve been a busy lad today! The sea and wake have been painted,I find that a ship travelling at a moderate speed,is the most difficult to paint,as these CVE`s were not the fastest (19 knots going down hill),it was quite difficult to get the wake looking right.Luckily there many aerial photos on Navsource of these vessels ,which helped a great deal.
The cling-film has all been removed, and a start can be made of the rest of the build.

So long Phil

Phil,

What a great effort! Very nice. :thumbs_up_1:

I may be missing something incredibly obvious but at what point do you remove the plastic wrap and how do you do it without cutting or damaging the ship or the built up sea?

That is really impressive painting of the seascape... Love the green in the wake and it just 'looks right' :thumbs_up_1:

You are right... that is just about the hardest thing to get right too... well done.

Thanks to everybody for the encouragement,

"..at what point do you remove the plastic wrap and how do you do it without cutting or damaging the ship or the built up sea?"

I remove the cling-film ,only when all the sea has been completed ,and finished. To do this I use the point of a new #26 scapel blade ,gently run round the waterline ,and doing my utmost to avoid marking the hull, and sea.For the bow-wave ,I use toilet tissue!! White ,of course ,pink would look a bit odd!!
More updates on the way

Cheers Phil

I didn`t realize that I needed the other Hasegawa PE set ,I thought I`d bought the "De-Luxe" set with everything and the kitchen-sink ,but for the deck-railings you still need the second cheaper set as well. This is very expensive build,I paid £120 for the kit and £110 for the PE sets,£230 !! I need to go have a lie down,in a darkened room!!
Joking apart,I`ve made progess with the fos`cle ,and quarterdeck(is it called that in the USN?). The kit includes some anchor chain of just about the right linkage ,enough for the model and some left over ,any way here`s the pics.

Cheers Phil

PHil.

Awsome job !! 2 questions for you what colors do you use for your water? and do you have any more pics of your DAS clay how to use. I just bought some today. do you store it in a Ziploc bag after it is opened, so it doesn't dry out??

Cheers
Eugene

Time now to break out the PE.I always tape mine to hard rubber floor tile,it protects it and it is still easily removed from the fret. The fantail 5" gun and tub have been finished ,I was quite surprised that you get 4 of these guns with the kit ,the other 3 will come in useful ,as I think they are good replicas of those weapons.
Regarding my sea colour ,Eugene,I start by using Humbrol #15 gloss dark blue ,and add yellow and gray until I get something near the colour required. As for the Das,I keep this foil ,and an airtight plastic bag, when not in use.

Bye Phil

Having completed the basic lower hull.I`ve moved on to the flight-deck.
Image

Image
Both the fore and aft F/D supports have attached,I drilled out those holes the can be seen .The fit of these parts was darn near perfect!

Image
The F/D comes in two halves ,I used white Squadron putty to hide the joint. To avoid sanding ,and removing the deck detail,I first spread a small amount of putty in the gap,and while still wet,I rub it down with a paper towel, dampend with Isopopyl Alcohol, doing only a small area at a time.

Image
The underside of the deck has been boxed in,again the parts fitted to perfection.

Image
The F/D is trial fitted to the hull,it`s looks like a CVE now!!

The flight-deck sides have been painted to match the camo pattern, and the counter-sunk F/D "dashs" have been filled in,using bodyputty.I airbrushed the F/D with Valleyo French Mirage Blue,it needed two coats to cover properly ,followed by a third coat witha bit of dark earth added to simulate the wear on the landing area. For the large "60" numbers ,I used strips of decal ,painted a very dark grey ,rather than black,to form the numbers, and retouched with a fine brush. The white dashes are from a decal sheet I found in my decal spares,I think they were from a 700th Essex kit,but they seemed to be just to fill the bill.
The flight-deck fitted to the hull perfectly ,no cement was used,it was such a snug fit,and it is completely flat with with no bumps or rises!

Bye Phil
