Queen Mary as a troopship

I imagine this may have been discussed before but I couldn't find anything specific in the search function. I am modeling the Queen Mary In her WW2 troop ship configuration. I have not been able to find out what color she was painted other than "grey" as noted on some Internet sources. Does anyone know the specific shade used during the war on this ship? Thanks.

I can't find it anymore, but I even saw a photo showing different shades of grey. Maybe this was just a snapshot during a paint refreshment. I think both the QM and QE received their grey livery in the US. Did they use USN paints then? I don't recall that this was ever mentioned in books. I would vote for 5-H.

I found some color shots of the Queen Mary returning to New York harbor in 1945 but the grey appears different in each shot. It does seem to have a light blue cast to it though.

I believe the ship was refitted in Sydney Australia after the start of hostilities. Thanks for the input thus far.

Initially the US Navy refused to share paint or paint formulas with non-USN ships (I presume there were exceptions for RN ships but haven't seen any documentation to confirm it). This started to change in late 1942 and took effect starting in January of 1943:

So it was most likely a civilian-manufactured gray before that point but could have been official USN after that.

Some years back I managed to flake a paint sample off the QM, and the gray looked very much like the wartime USN 5-H Haze Gray (though I never did an exact match).

I wish to model it as depicted in some photos I have of the ship as it returned to New york after the war. The most obvious thing is the degaussing cable, fastened around the hull. I am sure there are many small details to add in.

I am working with the Revell kit and my skills are somewhat limited. I have returned to shipbuilding after a 20 year period, so I have been building older kits that are a bit simpler than some of the new offerings. I have built 23 kits since Christmas, mostly Revell reissues and a few older kits such as a Mission Class oiler and Attack Transport Montrose. The Queen Mary is the next one after I finish the USS Yorktown.

I would appreciate any input if anyone has researched this subject. I will certainly put up pics when I get her finished. Thanks for your help, everyone.

If you are a recent returnee to modelshgipping you may choose to ignore the points outlined below and simply build the model and enjoy it--in which case read no further....

Here is a model built without PE or too many mods that makes an atmospheric diorama...

Here goes!


The biggest thing that needs to be addressed are the davit positions and the davits themselves.

the davits as such are easily addressed by using the WEM PE kit... which has great hollow centre fold up davits


Its the he positions of the davist that are a problem with the kit
They should coincide with the 'reinforced' window-less sections in the window row.
The apertures in the kit are spaced very wrongly because:

The kits boats are basically a bit too big-- I have prepared a brace of boats from a spare Airfix Queen Elizabeth kit
for my future build....

( you could see if you can acquire two kits-or a badly built example and a fresh kit--(its a lovelier kit than QM... )

the top superstructure that houses the funnel bases deck is a bit tall....

I will make mine all new when the time comes...
The funnel bands should be sanded off and replaced with thin tape- if I remember rightly the funnels are all a bit tall as well...

The fwd super-structure below the bridge has been 'flattened' in the kit...

If you want to pursue a completely accurate model of QM you may need to quire the anatomy of the ship Queen Mary book-- good plans and photos....

But here are some images I saved from the debriesfield website showing the mods to the fwd superstructure- alas I cannot recall who actually was building the model...

This is Mike's model. Don't quote me on his last name, there were quite a few Mike's on the former DF (Stooch, Ristuccia, Pell, etc....). Another one modificating the kit was Scott (again, can't associate him with the correct last name). The degaussing cable is quite easily build. I used the one from the WEM set on my QEAC, but found it too flat, rebuilt it from Evergreen strips in oder to make it a bit more stand out from the hull.
