Anyone have any close up pictures of the added guntub on the side of the Enterprise? It was added after her '43 refit, I have all the pics up on Navsource, but was wondering if someone has some close up pictures..

Here's a link to a shot on the USS Enterprise web site. The picture is from March of '44 but I suspect the tub didn't change much once it was installed:

I can't download the picture itself as it's in a weird format, but I hope this helps!

I cant either, but thanks!

Looking at other builds, and the 1/72nd museum model, for reference.

Try clicking and dragging the image onto your desktop, that worked okay for me, or use google chrome which ignores those weird html blocks.

EDIT: or click here.

By the way, those appear to be pretty standard 40mm tubs, look up your favorite cruiser or battleship and you should find several similar ones.

Thanks guys, I found a few pictures from my Pictorial Warship book that gave me a little more detail, and based on some other models, heres where I am minus the details. Not too bad for 1/700

If you are building the ship with these 40mm tubs, you will also need to add the hull blisters as they were added in the same 10/43 refit. Also, all portholes below hangar deck were plated over by then.

....and (by 10/43), removal of the external degaussing cables, and the fwd hanger deck extensions/sponsons :)

Ah crap. I knew about the blisters and the portholes, but didnt realize the deck extensions had to be removed. Was using the warship pictorial as reference, and on page 39 I have 3 pictures of "her late war apperance", and the one Ive been using mose I now realize is not a late war picture, but a pre '43 picture. And heres how far I got last night...now I have to firgure out if I can still correct it without making it look bad...

Doesnt the Enterprise keep 1 extrenal degaussing cable on each side after the refit?

Hi Guys.
I have to built a 1/350 Enterprise(Trumpeter Hornet as a base kit) as she was in the battle of Midway, and i have a few quick questions:

I already have got the Nautilus resin conversion set for above the flight deck so all my questions regard the hull more or less.

Are there any differences of the catwalks around the deck between the 'E' and Hornet? I ask this as i want to know if the catwalk etch sets for the Hornet will fit directly or not, and also the armament at this time was quad AA for the gun tubs and 20 mm single mounts?

Of course any other major differences you can point out would be most welcomed.

Sweet, I love your work! Ive found a couple answers for you, but hopefully others can also comment (Ive messed up before!)

I think for the most part, you'll be able to use the catwalk, but there are a couple of differences, so you may have to do some slight modifications. From what I see with my sources, the Hornet has one of the quad 1.1's on the catwalk behind the island, as well as another one behind the island on the flight deck, but the Enterprise still have both 1.1's on the flight deck behind the island (this would change before Nov of '42). Also, theres a tub added at the front of the catwalks. Below is the Enterprise at Pearl Harbor, between and after Midway. Notice the lack of 1.1 tub where one of the arrow points behind the island.

Another difference between the two are the main gun shields, Enterprise had a round curve going outside, whereas the Hornet has square box instead. I used red arrows to show the difference. Below is the Hornet at Santa Cruz.

Also, the front of the flight deck is also shaped different. Luckily, its easier to convert to the Enterprise than vis versa. Heres from one of the earlier pages of this thread, Enterprise/Yorktown on the left, Hornet on the right. Notice that the angle continues on the Enterprise deck, whereas on your hornet deck its turns straight forward.

Hope this helps!

Thank you for the time and effort you put into your answer.
I didnt know about the forward deck section being slightly different.
I am wondering regarding the catwalks , how accurate would be to use the old Tamiya 1/700 kit of Enterprise as a blueprint? I ask this because i am not sure what date it suppose to represent that kit the Enterprise.
This is amongst some other , an Enterprise build out of the box from the Tamiya kit , and painted as in Midway. What i am not sure is the configuration of the AA armament and the positions. But i was asked to built it like that so i did.But the 350 ptoject will need all the super detailing and corrections i can put on.

Im working on a Tamiya CV-6 myself, so Im familiar with its issues. The island of the kit is pre '43, yet the flight deck itself is after Midway '42. So it has too many spots for the 20mm's, too many gun tubs, and shouldnt have the tub support beams on the bow. The gun tub on the bow should have 2 20mms at Midway, but after would be replaced by a 40mm.

For Midway, Enterprise should have (32) 20mm's, (6) .50's, (4) 1.1 quads, and of course the (4) 5/38's.

However, I only know 30 of the 20mm's positions, and not sure where the .50 Cal's are. Red spots are 20mms, yellow .50cals. I marked 2 .50's on the front catwalks (I know there are gun's there, just can figure out which), and marked 2 20mm's at the rear catwalk (they could be .50 cals though). I think theres 4 more guns on the island, all have gun tubs, 2 in the front and 2 in the rear.

This picture above is of the Enterprise returning to Pearl from the battle of Midway (pic dated at July 12th). It has most of the gun tubs are clearly shown, others that were unclear I marked. (updated with correct picture)

Below is a picture of the Tamiya flight deck, which I have corrected if you want to use the kit as a templete. Also remember if you use the tamiya as a templete, the placement of the flight deck rear tubs are wrong for Midway (both should be on the flight deck, instead of just 1 on it and 1 on the catwalk).

Im sure Gordon Bjorklund might be able to make sure Ive got everything correct. He's built this ship several times, each excellent and found in the websites gallery.

Edit: Im not sure how different the instructions are between trumpy's 1/350 and 1/700 Hornet, but it might be a better starting spot for a blueprint of the catwalks. Heres page 8 of the 1/700 instructions

Image

The rear is good except part C24, C34 and C35 are correct but should be 50 cals. Above that diagram, tub part E36 should be on the flight deck (on top of piece D39 I beleive, or the box near the crane behind the island), not on piece B5. C26 and C25 on the front catwalks just need tubs at the very front.

I think we are getting somewhere now.Just need to clarify the position of the 50 cal guns.Warship pictorial page 30 , you can just about make it from the thickness of a gun sticking out against the clear sky backdrop that is thicker than the 20mm on the same picture(stern view). Therefore they were prop 50 cal there i would say, and by this reasoning i would say same for the forward gun tubs..But i still cant find anything about the other 2 50 cal positions.

you also said she had only 4 5/38'? i mean isnt there 4 platforms for 2 guns each?

whoops, yes, 8 5/38s.

I would agree about the 50 cal on the front cat, would match the rear, so thats 4. But when I look at Pg 27, theres a couple tubs on the island, 1 rear and 1 under the mast, both look like they have 20mm's point up...so now im confused. So is that 34 20's and 4 50's?

It sais that its May 42 and that the gallery is of 20mms's so they look pretty much the same as the guns sticking out from the gun tubs on the island(covered in some protecting clothing i think). So i would say they are also 20 mm those(dont look thick enough for 50 cal ).It seems for some reason they didnt replace the 4 50 cal guns at the fwd and rear tubs.Cant see any other location with a reasonably clear field of view to have a 50 cal installed without any protective shield or tub to be in.

Also looking at G.B model of Enterprise as in Midway, he has 2 more 20mm on the same spot on the bridge as these 2 gun tubs you mentioned but on the opposite side, facing to the deck so we might be looking at 36 20mm at least.

So I would guess theres a total of 4 on the island itself then.

Edit: Bingo, it looks like there were 4 50 cals in the rear of the catwalk, the other 2 at the front.

Therefore, this changes

Image
guns by JTninja, on Flickr

This means C23-25 of the trumpy instructions remain the same, just .50 cals instead of 20mm's..
