They should be new tools. Examine the mfg phtos. IF they show hull plating seams and portholes (both overscale) , they are new.

Aoshima 1933 Hatsuharu

Post by Steve »

The noted new releases with PE are most probably based on the kits released earlier this year which are very nicely done. They are cerainly not repops of the much older kits from the 70's/80's. You can see the details of the new 1933 versions released without PE on Hobby Search.

I have to say, having been interested in the story of P.T. 109 since I was a kid (my dad took me to see the movie in 1963 and it really caught my young imagination), I love the idea of being able to build up a display incorporating the Amagiri and the 109, together, and in the same scale. I'm currently working on Revell's old 1/72 P.T. 109 kit (can't remember how many times I built that kit as a kid!) with the WEM PE set. I also really like both the USN and IJN DDs and DEs. Looks like the 109 will be, of necessity at that scale, pretty basic, but the Amagiri looks like it should be pretty sweet. Might just have to see if I can sneak this one past the C-in-C when they hit the shelves.

Anyone has any comments/thoughts/review about the Mono Chrome's 1/350 IJN Akizuki 1942/1944 and the 1/350 IJN Suzutsuki 1945 ?
Thanks in advance.

I don't have it, so I can't comment. I think Chuck has one, and has spotted a few errors. My Fujimi Shiratsuyu kit is enroute.

Bob, how about scratchbuilding the Amagiri in 1/72, to go with PT-109? Now, that would be some diorama. :-)

I have the 1942 version. The major issue is the f'c'stle deck. On the real ship the edge of the the deck rounds smoothly down to meet the hullsides abreast the bridge. The model depicts a sharp turn down.

Otherwise the model is serviceable. The dimensions of the torpedo tubes are questionable.

I just spotted the next PitRoad 1/700 accessory kit, NE-05, on their website. It looks to be a DD accessory set. I imagine it will replace their E-10 DD set at some point. Almost everything on it save the turret & depth charge racks has, or is about to, appear on one of their first 4 NE-0 series sets.

Dan, I appreciate your confidence in my scratch building abilities. Unfortunately, I could about as likely scratch build a 1/72 Amagiri as I could build NASA's replacement for the Space Shuttle - the skills just ain't there. I do have to admit, though, it would make a heck of a diorama, depicting them both just moments before the collision. I wish I had the skills. But, I think I'll just have to settle for a 1/72 P.T. 109 and a 1/350 IJN Amagiri.

Hey guys, I have a few question on the destroyer IJN Hatsushimo. The first is on her AA singles, and the placement of them. Looking at pit-roads and Aoshima single mounts are different. Dose any one know which is correct? Second when looking at the forward double AA mount base in front of the bridge. Is there a single leg holding up the AA platform like the kagero class or a double? And the last is if anyone has a good reference as to what was/might have been, the antennas and such were placed above the bridge during on IJN Hatsushimo during Ten-go? thank you guys and sorry for all the questions.

Well, there probably is an official sketch of her single 25mm AA layout out there somewhere, I just don't have it. :no_2:
You might want to compare the kit locations to those shown in the Profile Morskie/BS illustration below. We just can't be sure how accurate it is.

Below that is an illustration of her bridge from the same volume; this I believe to be acccurate.

Good question about the supports for the forward AA platform. I believe it to be an "H" like pattern similar to the previous Fubuki class, and not a singular column. See the Ushio bridge photo for a close-up. May I note that the platform is ringed with canvas covered railings, and not steel plating/splinter shielding.

Thanks again Dan K for your knowledge and pics as always! Do you by any chance know how to flatten the fore deck AA gun platform without ruining the anti-skid deck below and add what appears to be canvas the photo etch rails?

I suggest slicing the solid plastic railing from the outside with a razor blade, slowly working it in at approximately the same level as the decking. You can use a minifile to tamp down any height that's left. Attach your railings from the outside of the platform, not on top of it. When you apply the canvas covering (in my case, thickened paint), it will all be seamless.

An example from Ushio (with incorrect single column support)

Ah thanks Dan k for the tip! When construction begins which ship do you suggest to buy ? The new aoshima Hatsushimo or the older pit-road kit? I did have the pit-road kit and liked it, at one point until it was "sunk" while moving it from the work bench to the shelve. :doh_1:

I'm not sure how to advise you as I do not have the new Aoshima versions as of yet. I always thought the PitRoad Hatsuharus to be among the best of their DDs but, the new Aoshima toolings are at least 15 years younger, and should theoretically benifit from all sorts of research and tooling advances. Perhaps there is someone else who has both and can weigh in?

My next IJN destroyer will be the 1/700 Skywave W28 Hatsuharu

I going to build it as she appeared on Dec 8 1941. Does anyone know what it had for AA guns on either side of the rear stack? Singles, doubles or triples? Any other comments?

Thanks
