Re: Calling all Des Moiens class CH fans
Commander's has a 1/700 scale kit in resin.
Yankee Model Works has a 1/350th scale kit in resin.
Those are the only two that I'm aware of. Nothing in plastic, unless maybe there's an old Revell or Aurora kit out there I'm not familiar with.

What would be the best color to match the Salem in the mid 1950's early 1960's? I have the resin kit (1/700) of her and would like to match as best as I can.
thanks in Advance!

Does anyone have any Des Moines-class plans on their hands? I have mis-placed the ones I used to modernize her in 2006 and I cannot find the .jpeg versions them on the web anymore. Any help?

Dave, look at these:
http://www.tranhungdaotrip.com/ShipsPlans.html
They are copies of the USN General Booklet of Plans on the USS Newport News' (CA-148) website. They're a little grainy though so don't try and read anything on them.

Thanks, Cliffy! I appreciate it. Take a jog on over to the Reactivated and Modernized Spruance thread and tell me what you think
The Des Moines pages are good. There's more work for me.

USS Newport News CA-148
Hey, guys,
Does anyone have any specific pictures of the Newport News? I am particularly interested in her bridge, aircraft hanger, and flag accomodations on either side of ther super structure. Newport News was one of those ships that was slated to be used far longer than she acually was. I would very much like to see more pictures of the ship.
Can anyone help?
Thanks, guys!

Re: Calling all USS Des Moines class (CA) fans
I've looked for a few hours for usable pics of these areas, but as usual it seems that no one was interested in taking medium-distance pictures, only up close on sailors or long distance shots from other ships or aircraft. And of course, they're only posted in "web" resolution. Gah.
In short, I'm also interested in seeing these bits, as I'm not all that familiar with the modifications the ship went through...

Re: Calling all USS Des Moines class (CA) fans
Does anyone have good pictures of the Newport News after she received her flag modification of '61-'62? I am trying to find reliable pictures of the structures built over her 3"/50 magazines for the flag staff and ECM equipment.
This is the only good one I could find: Other than that, I know there are some good ones in Friedman's US Cruisers book, but...I don't have access to one
Could someone who does flip through it and scan a picture or two for me please?
Thanks, guys!

Hello, the new kit from Combrig Models of the USS Salem CA-139 is very good. The body part is shown by the very good shape and casting quality.

The PE work required for the radar set in the mainmast is scary ! Beside that looks like an easy build.

Good thing I'm whiffing mine into the 1980's. Which means I'll get to build an entire one from scratch!Atma wrote:The PE work required for the radar set in the mainmast is scary ! Beside that looks like an easy build.
Based on the review's listing and current exchange rates, it will cost $106.50 in USD. Anyone know of a firm release date yet?

Paperlabs was commissioned to CAD up a USS Newport News in 1/1250 by Navis-Neptune! Being in 1:1250 can only offer so much.
