Need Help on Affixing IJN Guard Rails

Hello veteran ship modelers,

I am a newbie needing your expertise. I am building my very first ship model which is the Hasegawa IJN 1/350th Isokaze plus Lion Roar Kagero PE. I didn't realize how tiny those PE parts are! I am currently having difficulty affixing the guard rails on to the gun and torpedo turrets (later the smoke funnels). I have lost a couple of guard rails already in the process and I ended up buying this set below as replacement.



When I view pictures of other modeler's works, these were affixed very beautifully and cleanly. Any advice on the proper approach? Does anybody have a technique to share? Do I need to drill holes? CA or PVA? I'm getting frustrated but I'm not giving up yet.

You make no mention if the rails you have purchased have a bottom rail--ie a waterway.

If they are turret top rails my guess is no...

Looking at the example illustrations in your post I would suggest the following.

1) take a piece of thin paper and lay it over the turret, use a[pencil to 'rub' thru the profile shape of the turret.

2) shape the rails on this piece of paper until the stanchion bottoms align with the outline of the turret.

3) having painted the turret; take some matt varnish( check it has not a yellow tinge--I use Humbrol Matt kote

and apply a thinned bead of varnish along the edges where the rails need to mount.

4) drop your pre-formed rails into the varnish--which when thinned will dry very quickly.

5) airbrush a final dull coat over the entire model upon completion and all traces of your 'adhesive' varnish will vanish.

Jim,

If you were to be affixing foot rails to a funnel, what method would you use? I'm a bit puzzled as to how you get the PE foot rail piece to conform to the shape of the funnel and, having done so, how you get the thing to stay put!
