good point Mr Johnson
if my memory serves me right, then Skulskis book was drawn from the 44 refit draughts which i cant remember , but someone stashed them away , obviously a dangerous thing to do in those times ,
im going off old memories here , im not sure .

Hi Thomas.

Copies of her plans have been found, piece-meal, in various locations. What appears to have been destroyed except for a few trial run photos, are all of the Japanese Navy photos and film of Yamato. For example, there is no known photo taken on board Yamato except for several close-ups of her officers including one with Adm. Yamamoto in 1942, and another taken just prior to Ten-ichi-go that do not show any of the ship's features. Several photos taken on board Musashi exist, but they were private snap shots, not official Navy photos.

Skulski's book contains a number of inaccuracies regarding her deck gun emplacement. New info was discovered since the book was written, including an overhead photo taken by a B-29 on April 6, 1945, from 20,000 feet up that clarified a few things. Lastly, the survivors and those who served on board Yamato/Musashi also helped to fill in the gaps.

Model Factory Hiro's main site has more picture of the upcoming 1/700 multimedia IJN Yamato:
"The right side of the ship body is designed to be detachable that you can see the internal parts (the vital parts, boiler room, mechanical room, the below parts of the second turret, ammunition storage, gunpowder room, etc.)"

"The barrels of the main and sub artilleries will be made of alloys, and the barrels anti-aircraft guns will be made of super-thin stainless steel pipes."

Hi guys, I need a thing, but I don't have the time now to read all of the 76 pages.

If it's not a problem for someone to answer me , I'd be grateful.

I'm looking at the new tool Yamato, I'd done the old one 4 years ago. I would like to do it in her 1945 final cruise configuration, anyone have the list of changes that has to be made in order to make a accurate model? A diagram showing the position of the AA would be great

The deck was really blackish on that cruise or was already wear off by the weather and crew?

The new model accurately portrays the Yamato in April of 1945. No need to make changes. Just follow the instructions about the aft crane and aircraft. As far as the black deck goes, the jury is still out on that.

Yeah, the deck has been portrayed as light in many recreations including the 2005 Japanese film "Men of Yamato".

However, in truth it was painted "jet black" for Ten-ichi-go according to Yoshida. So that's that.

My guess is the deck had a grey tint to it and the water gave it a shiny black look when looking at it from angle . Yoshida also called the the water "jet black" with oil.

So the tan deck amd a dark wash was should do the trick?? And what about the gun configuration? I saw on the internet that on the last cruise that they added more triple 25mm guns on the fore part of he ship behind the sandbags but Tamiya give 2 single barrel AA guns, so what's right?

Go to bucketfoot-al's webpage http://www.battleshipyamato.com. AA configeration should be there.

About the deck I doubt there was any yellow left at all. Here is a pic of the wood deck at the Yamato museum and the Mikasa. This is about what I think the Yamato deck on 45' looked like. Mikasa deck should have been made with hinoki cypress. Notice the overhead look on the museum deck. I think that might be the dry color of the deck.

Final deck AAA configuration can be seen here:

http://www.battleshipyamato.com/tenichi_yamato_mini.JPG

You will note there were 8 single AAA guns - 4 near the stern, and 4 just behind Turret #1.

I see now, thanks.

I see a gun director positioned between the secondary armament turrets, at the sides of the funnel, I don't see this detail on the Tamiya Yamato

So did Tamiya get it right, or the configuration on wikipedia is right?

Big Chicken (ti govoris Srpski i Hrvatski, ne?):

I don't know about Tamiya, but the 2005 Takara Yamato got it right. There was an extra fire director between the lower deck 5" guns, and another one added to the deck above the gun deck.

Take a careful look at this photo of the Takara model:

So there is a possibility that there was another fire control.Anyone else have some proof?

Ja idem u hrvatsku u posjetu majci (i da se okupam u Jadranu) slijedeceg tjedna.

As far as the references go, unless you can read Japanese, you're bound to be out of luck. However, the 2005 Takara Yamato was produced in conjunction with the "Men of Yamato" film released for the 60th anniversary of her final battle. This was a big deal and a ton of research was done in preparation. So I believe that this model is the best I've seen so far. BTW I don't think there is any debate that the additional fire director was added between the lower deck 5" guns. It was added to help aim the .25mm machine guns - about 24 additional .25mm mounts were added for Ten-ichi-go.

OK Here is the best I can do:

Go to the large photo of the Yamato burning here:

http://www.battleshipyamato.com/Yam_Tengo_mini.JPG

Look carefully and you will see a small circular object between the 5" anti-aircraft guns. That is the extra fire director.
