Hi!

This will be my first build thread so let's see how it works out.

I'm still waiting for the kit but it's in the mail so hopefully will get it in couple of days.
Already have the etch set from WEM so I made some progress on the masts already.
Decided I'm gonna build this as waterline ( will be my first ).
I'm still debating if I'm gonna make a scene like this or just the Panteleyev.

Some assembly pics of the fore and mainmast.

And painted.

Some test on how to make water on one of the LCUs of USS Wasp.

Will update when I get the kit.

Kit arrived!

Image

Started working on the hull and deck.

Image
Image

After gluing the hull sand the seam down. After that heavy application of Mr. Surfacer 500 with a brush ontop of the seam.
More sanding after curing. Then primed with Vallejo Gray surface primer.

Image

Seam is pretty much gone.

Image

Now for painting the hull. I will get pics tonight or tomorrow.

That mast is a work of art in itself.
Looking forwards to following this build.
Regards
Richard :thumbs_up_1:

Paint!

Preshaded with Navy Blue H54.

Image

Image
Image

After that my own mix of blue gray. Barley gray H334 mixed with a tint of Navy Blue H54 and White H316 to lighten it up.
After that more white was added and highlights airbrushed to the center of the panels.

Image

The effect is much more subtle than the photos appear to show.
Preshading is great way imo to break monotone gray paint jobs.
I always mix the paint on the fly so each session has a bit different color to break up the scheme more.

Looking good :thumbs_up_1:

Be careful when attaching the forward superstructure to the deck, you might find that there is a sizeable gap at the sides. Try dry fitting the parts before assembly. You might also notice a gap between the bottom and the upper part of the middle section of the superstructure. Furthermore, the part of the superstructure with the No2 gun may not attach well to the main deck or might not meet correctly with the rest of the superstructure. Those are some of the problems I met while building the kit...

Painted hull red (H327) and white boot strip (H316).
Decals were also added and overcoated with Alclad aqua gloss to protect them from the upcoming weathering.

Deck was preshaded with black (H2) and after that painted with dark gray (H401).
Dark gray was lightened and highlights added.

Next painting the details on the deck and weathering of the hull and deck.

Some very fine work. YOU must have incredible patience working with that much PE. I struggled just to put railings on my Nimitz. I'll be watching your build til the end. :thumbs_up_1:

I am a big fan of pre-shading. Never heard of it until I started building aircraft. Now that I got the airbrush it's going to be a must do in all my builds.

Your PE work is fantastic. What glue are you using?

I'm using ZAP Thin CA. I usually pour it a bit in a small cup or bottle end then use a copper wire (just something wire that's thin) to apply it.
It bonds about in few seconds so it's not forgiving at all but helps a lot if you can actully keep the parts the way you want :cool_2:

I have the thin, but never used it for PE. I'll give it a try.

Finished some weathering on the hull and deck.

First started with a blue filter applied all over the hull.
After that dark wash to the portholes and other details.
Finished it with adding daps of oil paint then streaked them down with a brush damped with thinner.

Image

The deck had a dark brown wash and after that I sprinkled dark and light earth pigments all around the deck
and then used a big brush dampped with thinner and spread them around. After drying brushed them a bit for
more subtle effect.

Worked on the details on the bow.

Unpainted turret.

Painted and weathered.

Everything looks more natural to the naked eye than in photos. Gloss paint etc. makes it a bit more stronger also.

Speed build (tm)

I'm a fairly fast builder but I lose intrest fast in small tedious task (like building 60 small aa guns)
which makes me put the build to a drydock for a while :heh:
