I've had this Tamiya CVN-65 for a little while now and had started on the island and some of the aircraft for it some time ago. I figured since I had just joined Modelwarships that I would take some pics of the build as I go along. I actually built this kit when I was younger and found another one a while back on sale for about 70 bucks which was a steal and I figured since my modeling skills have improved since then that I would try and put everything I have learned into this one. I've kind of started things backwards with building some of the aircraft and the island but, hey what the heck. I am modifying this one for the 2001 time frame which I have seen done before with outstanding results from other modelers. This one probably won't be finished anytime soon . . . . . .

Here are some shots of the island. I am using the Gold medal models photo etch set and some scratch building for the sponsons and re-work with plastic stock. Everything is masked with tape to protect it while I build. I have the windows done and there is actually interior work inside. Sorry it's not visible in the photos.

Yes you have lots of work to do , that others have done before :wave_1:

Maybe less pictures will help.

I hope this works out for you, but it has been around for sometime.

Good luck :Mad_5:

PS-Sorry I should have not said that. :cool_2:

All WIP pics are a great help. You can't have enough pics to bounce ideas from. :thumbs_up_1:

Like many here, I too have this kit, hopefully next in line after my Nimitz. Nice progress so far and your aircraft are unbelievable. I'm glad to see another WIP for this kit. :thumbs_up_1:

Regardless of how many times we've seen this kit built, it never gets old seeing one built well with obvious time and care put into it. Please continue sir, I look forward to seeing her finished :thumbs_up_1:

Thank you for the kind words Cliffy B. You know I have followed this website for some time now but never joined or submitted anything until very recently. I've watched some of the modelers on this site and saw what you guys can do and it's awe inspiring. To have you guys even looking at my stuff and commenting is more than I can put into words, so thank you. :thanks:

I am going to enjoy watching this WIP. After seeing what you can do with a 1/720 Nimitz Class this will be a treat.

I asked Santa for the same kit of the Big E and if I get it I plan to build her as she was for her final cruise.

Keep up the great work DWD.

Denis

There have been about 3 million 1/350 Nimitz's built here as well, but, that didn't stop me. Press on sir and update often. :thumbs_up_1:

Great start on the island, and your airwing...wow, very very nicely done, even have nav lights on the prowler! Doing an airwing to that standard truly takes dedication. I for one, am looking forward to seeing more pictures, lots more, bring em on. :thumbs_up_1:

Sorry I haven't updated in a little while. I have been doing some building, but mostly still in the planning phase. I'm still deciding if I will mount full hull or make it a waterline. I will be lighting the deck and thanks to Sgtryan13 I have a good idea where I am getting the lighting from. Thank you for that one. I will post some more pics possibly tonight when I get a chance. I do have one more of the prowler's "office" that I forgot to post.

Here are some shots of work for the start of the hangar deck. I lightly drilled out the tie downs for the whole floor at about 1/4" spacing. I wanted to see how well it would turn out because I plan to sand the upper deck down and do the same up top as well. I also cut the hangar deck openings and squared them off. I didn't like how thick the plastic was so I will go back and rebuild the rounded edges with thinner plastic later so that the inner and outter wall remain the same consistency of width.
