Hi Tony!

I should be posting pics of the Alaska real soon!!!

A friend of mine just bought a digital camera and he offered to take pictures of my models.

I haven't continued work on my Alaska since I am finishing the Bismarck but the progress pics will still show the hull's camouflage and some of the major parts also with camouflage. This build should be a breeze after a very long time on the Bismarck!!!!

Nice Alaska GoneAsiatic!!! I will try to post some pics sometime next week. The model is unfinished but the paint job on the hull, turrets and funnel is mostly finished.

Hi everyone.

I was wondering, what makes the Alaska class cruisers as opposed to battleships? Their main guns are what you would normally think of being on a BB and so are their size. Pardon the ignorance.

The Alaska and Guam are pretty sexy ships though! Wish someone would come out with them in plastic (hint, hint Trumpeter or Tamiya!).
Just curious.

Andy,
The Alaska class cruisers, (CB-1 and CB-2), were actually longer than all but the Iowa Class BB's in overall length, (as fars as armed ships of this size goes). Sure enough, they were as graceful and distinguished in appearance as the Iowa Class.
The major distinction between the CB and a BB is the armament and armor configuration. The Alaska Class were cruisers with cruiser armor. The armament carried by this class was the 12"50 calibre weapon. At a nominal range, there was not a Japanese ship afloat then that had armor that could withstand this weapon.
The BB's are built to take what they can dish-out, the CB's were constructed to outrun what they could not out-gun. One of the reasons for the construction of this class was to meet the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau, (very successful German battle-cruisers), under better than even terms. This was never to happen...of course.
A lay answer, but follows what I have read and believe to be from credible sources.

while my 1/500 sctatchbuild pails in comparison, I too love those fuel guzzling, underachieving, and beautiful "large" cruisers discussed in this forum. God! I would have liked to have see them in the Solomons in 42.

I have the Nichimo Admiral Graf Spee, and this one is very hard to find!
Not a bad kit though.

Your not kidding, its hard to find. The last one sold for 76$ on e-bay. I am building one from a 1/570 Gneisnau right now.

Should I tell you that I have two?
Both I got on Ebay. Well actually, I HAD three.
The first one, I lost out on at $292.50. Good thing, huh? Can you say, "
insanity"?
The first one I got for $200 from the guy who won it for $292.50. He did not like the kit and he hated the price he had to pay for it. What? Did someone put a gun to his head? I think not!
This guy hosed me. I paid him $200 for it, and it showed up...incomplete! I remember seeing the kit while it was still on Ebay, and it was complete.
The second one I got on Ebay about 4 months later for......$112.
This was in mint condition, and I was happy!
I stumbled across another one about six months later, and I won it for........$19.99. No one even bid on that one, but me!
Talk about a spread!
Anyway, I sold one of the complete Spee's to a guy in the UK for $85. I had to do some mathematical computations before deciding to sell one of them for $85!
story of my life on Ebay..if you can't wait, you will pay dearly!

Hi Tony!

I have pictures of my Alaska and Bismarck but I need to have them developped. I do hope they will turn out ok though. We used an OLD camera to do them and I'm not sure if the settings we used are good. Should not be long before I'm able to post them.

As for Bismarck she's nearing completion. Only need to apply a few railings on the aft part of the #1 level. Afterward I'll need to detail the motor launches and glue in place. Then it's on to the final railings on the main decks and riggings. Should be finished soon but don't know when.

As soon as I have pictures available I'll post here.
