Was that a Kaman SH-2 on the Knox class ship? If so, was it built from scratch or from a kit?

Was there a thread for the Knox class build on the Forum?

Phil

Ya its a Seasprite not sure if its from a kit but I will find out, The ship is about 10+ years old Dave who built her needed more space!!I think the ship is completely scratchbuilt, He has a lot of 1/72 ships! Graham bought back the Knox class and a Gearing class (Frank E. Evans) as these smaller models are easier on his back!

Cheers Bruce :cool_1: :cool_1:

Hi Bruce looks like you had a great time , Long Beach looking really good. The biggest warship event in the UK , the National Warship Weekend is 3 weeks away , weather has not been kind to us . rain and more rain , so we can only hope there will be a change and soon or it will be hard to see where the pond starts and the road finishes . :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1: :wave_1:

G'day All,
Took USS Long Beach 170km North to the lake in the township of Clare (in the heart of the famous Clare Valley wine region) for a TF72 running day, we caught up with two of our northern members Chris and Ivan. It was a nice day apart from very gusty winds (which effected the smaller models causing two (Near) sinking's which I was able prevent just! by wading in and grabbing the models!!

I will be doing some hull repairs (chipped F/g!!) and superstructure rebuilding over summer (notably both lots of bridge windows), a new revised version of the Hanger block and a strengthened midships structure (existing one is not very strong). Followed by a full repaint of hull and superstructure before the new Custom decals from Hawkgraphics go on.

Cheers Bruce

Took Long Beach and my Salvage Tug for a Pre Annual Regatta test run today to test the port side anchor winch on LB under operating conditions....all I can say is the winch worked properly at home! It still needs some tinkering as it will only drop 4" when the clutch releases on the chain drum, once its runs out more chain it drops by itself ok. I may swap it to the stbd side winch position which always seemed 2 work better (until I broke it...)

Apart from the winch being uncooperative CGN-9 ran nicely (much better than the tug which had some rudder hyper extension issues with the tiller arms at full rudder....

Cheers Bruce

Just before a went too the TF72 annual Regatta (which was in Wagga Wagga this year) my monster order of custom decals arrived from Darren at Hawkgraphics!! They are a superb piece of artwork (see pics) I got all the Ships ribbons and Squadron crests for both CGN9 and CGN36 as well as the ships small boats No's and ship names, and two sheets of warning circles for around missile launchers and guns.

If you need some custom decals done e-mail Darren at Hawkgraphics!!

Cheers Bruce

WOW!!! What a beautiful bow!!! Just so you know...it makes me visualize a Mk71 in place of the Mk10 launcher and a Mk41 VLS on top of the Mk10 magazine structure.

I can't wait to see what the rest of this year and next brings for you. Long Beach has turned out to be such a beautiful ship!

I have been conducting some repairs and pre summer maintenance on USS Long Beach.
Finally got around to modifying the Krick anchor winch by adding a series of 4.8x2mm strips of evergreen styrene around the winch drum, this has made the drum hub go from being approx. 8mm dia to about 18mm dia. giving better torque for pulling up the anchor, it now (in bench testing.....) comes up easily every time and also seems to release and drop better too!
Also began a respray of the superstructure and upper deck non skid coating, this has involved many of hours of masking up.....just the Hanger section to finish tomorrow.

Cheers Bruce

Last week I also dug out a couple 1/72 Helicopter kits from my stockpile and began construction of an MH-60S "Knighthawk" as an additional flight deck dweller for CGN-9 (I can rotate which chopper is on the deck depending on my whim!) The Mh-60S is based on the Blackhawk airframe with SH-60 cockpit layout and HH-60 Engines I have taken parts from a Hobbyboss HH-60 kit and used the majority of a Hasegawa UH-60 kit. This aircraft has shorten stub wing pylons (high mount type found on the UH60) cutdown to suit with 4 Hellfire missiles per side and a pair of machine guns out of each side too. (an M60 and a aircooled 0.50 cal M2 !!)
So far I have made up the interior and seat section, wing pylons, Hellfire missiles, fuselage halves and fitted working Nav lights (tiny LEDS) on the wing pylons and the fuselage sides with two more Reds to go on in the Tail and belly.........after the tail rotor and main rotor motor's get fitted.

Here are some LED test pix!!

Cheers Bruce

Well despite several hours fixing the anchor winch and ten successful tests on the bench it still doesn't work properly when you try it on the water! Had a great two days sailing over the weekend (including a night run.....need more lights!) here are some pix of CGN9 at Naracoorte, South Australia

here are some pix from the night run.....I was too busy sailing to get alot!! The general consensus was that more lights is better!! The super tiny LEDs used on HMAS Darwin and Canberra are visible clearly at night, where as the older style 3mm LED's used in CGN9's Nav and mast light are not bright enough to see when more than 20 feet away at night!

File comment: CGN9's bridge battle lighting was nicknamed by one wag the Cylon cruiser! It was suggested setting up a red LED chaser effect for bridge lights!
