Calling all USN Attack Transport (APA & LPA) fans

I didn't see an attack transport topic, sorry if I missed it. On the USS Montrose at the bow(front) there is a gun there and to me it looks to be a quad 40 bofor, is it?

After searching the net and coming up blank I'd thought I would throw this out to the forum.

I'm looking to build an 1/700 APA either in a C3-P&C (eg; Crescent City) and/or a USSB 1029 "President" type of transport. I have the WSW Callaway C3 which differs from the hulls I'm
looking for.

I know they don't exist in injection mould, but was wondering if anyone has any info a resin kit.
I've searched the site sponsors and the web and am still in the dark.

If anyone can point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated.

Russ, that was one of the first places I checked. Mostly AK's are offered, but not the hull I'm looking for. Although Harry's C2 Sea Witch, will make a nice APA-49 class that I plan to build also.

In reply to Werner's question of Sept. 12th, Carl Musselman tells me that is a mk51 director in a raised tub. Some of the Barnegat class AVP's had them, and Carl's knowledge of that class is encyclopedic. There is one for the quad 40mm, and one for each of the four twin 40mm's.

In the What's New for today ,you'll see a CL by Richard Sliwka. In the last photo, you'll see a Mk 51 director in an elevated tub between the anchor chains.

If you go to the photos from Telford posted in What's New about two weeks ago, on the third page, top row, you'll see three photos of a Montrose kit which the modeler has dramatically improved, something I've been working on for several months. I wish we knew his identity.

Question! I see a divergence from what seems normal practice in a number of APA models. The entire hull is painted in boot top black. The photos I have examined do not show enough of the hull to see where the bottom ends, if it does. One AKA on a similar hull is light enough forward that it appears that maybe the boot top ends down about 8'.

Anybody have any definitive info on this?

This is my current progress on USS Randall, APA 224. 100% scratch built, no stink'n PE etc. My question to the knowledgable folks here is about the semi circular "pipes" at the waterline level often seen on the APA's. Are these some sort of overboard discharge pipe or do they act as bumpers to keep the embarked "passengers" from getting smashed between the hull and boats?

Tom, the "pipes" are essentially bumpers, not to protect the passengers but the ships hull from the battering of the landing craft from wind & wave action.

Thanks! They would tend to keep anyone from getting crushed between the ship and LCVP. There are a couple of long pairs which have some feature at the bottom that looks like a latch or some such. Any info on those?

By "long pairs" you are still referring to the vertical bumpers, correct?

There is a blurb in the article:
"Deckhands put out the fenders and man the boathooks while you throttle down so as to come alongside slowly and smoothly. A deft hand is needed on the wheel to avoid damage to the hull. In a moment you are beside the ship and the bow line is secured to the sea painter. Then the cargo net is lowered into the LCVP's cargo space and held taut."

So possibly the latch you are referring to are for the boathooks to hook into once alongside?
