Calling all Iowa-class (BB-61) fans

Current progress on my mostly scratch project. The underlying ship is a 1;192 Sterling I built in 1944 config in the year 1965. Nothing remains visible of the original model...... Teak decking on the superstructure which is hand planked is masked till most of the detail is on the upperworks as I cannot get any paint on it! I am going to be Hono next week, but for a short enough time don't know if I can get over to the ship or not for more photos.

Blasting off for some time so no more progress for a bit.

Anyone have a good shot of the CIWS deck on the New Jersey (the one between the Harpoons and the Tomahawk launchers. I would need the layout of the hatches and locker. Thanks

Speaking of shots! The ship is resplendent with a great number of cage like containers fror life raft canisters. I would like to model these with the canisters in service. Anyone have photos of the units as in service? I may get a chance to visit the ship again in a couple of days, but that is of no help as they are all empty! To scratch build all of the cages seems a daunting task, not sure any PE is available for these in 1:192?

Blasting off tomorrow eve for Hno, so should barely have enough time to head out to Pearl to see Mo again. Will try to take a zillion photos none of which are works of art, but show bulkhead details and whatever I can find (backs of turrets etc.).. Since last time I went... Geeze what didn't I take a photo of that..

The BBs couldn't use the canister-type liferafts that most modern USN ships carry, because overpressure from the 16" guns would cause them to burst. Instead those racks held an older style of liferaft, and were covered with a tarp (usually black).

Back from Missouri again. Some sun a lot of rain today, but still cranked throughsome 350-400 photos of whatever details I could get to. I have seen photos that included the life rafts, but nothing good enough so far to build a replica. Did get to see the famous John Haynes model, quite spectacular.

Been posting some photos over in the scratch area fro Luky, but should post a few here from yesterday. of interest perhaps, areas I need to modify. note at the fwd bulkheads of the covered weather deck the structure is rounded and tapered, not verticle, and CIWS deck has undercuts port and stbd.

Note 51 and 52 mounts under the bridge wings do not have blast hoods for the gun captain.

Last Missouri visit was in Sept. I was somewhat surprised by an increase in rust and corosion. The interior of the ship is sill in good shape, due to the preservation methods in use, but the exterior appears to be slowly getting out of hand. The ship used to have a huge deckforce and recurring drydock episodes. This picture of the tower shows some decks developing pinhole rust spots, and this is not the only place!

A location for Missouri was a controversy, Bremerton had some advantages, as does Pearl, the biggest disadvantage for the present location is keeping the rust in check, semi and tropical climates are a heaven for the rusticates.... Eventually the rust will kill the ship.

Tables of Offset contain the numerical dimensions describing the shape of the hull. Real ship builders require them to create the hull frames and sections that we modellers sometimes use. Modelers who utilize CAD would also prefer using the Tables rather than the hull frame drawings because tracing over the hull frames is not very precise (e.g. which side of the line do you trace on?), whereas numbers are very exact and you can just enter them into the computer with no ambiguity.
