Hello to all, This is my first post here on Modelwarships. I'm mainly a 1/72 aircraft modeller, but please don't hold that against me as I have a feeling I'm going to be needing some advice from the good folk here on my latest project.
Image
This is Tamiya's HMAS Vampire, NNT's HMAS Sydney and Combrigs HMAS Canberra. The harbour itself I'm just making up as I go along and actually see the parts I seem to be spending a hell of alot of money on (I do love getting home from work to a parcel in the letter box tho) the dock sections and(in the post) buildings, harbour tugs and other bits and pieces are Battlefleet models, The trucks are Niko models, They also have some really nice 4inch gun mounts as replacements for Sydney although whether they are correct for Sydney I don't know but they look cool so I'm using them. The cranes and trains are Alliance modelworks and the building already down is White ensign.
I've been working on this for nearly 2 months now and have Vampire pretty much completed, Sydney well on her way, but its my first resin ship kit so its proving interesting and Canberra has been started but I'll concentrate on her after Sydney is done.
I've also done the ground work for the docks just so I could see what I was trying to achieve if that makes sense. Once my next package arrives I can get an idea how the dock will end up looking.
So this is Vampire

and this is Sydney, the crane, catapualt, guns, masts and a couple of others are just sitting on but the rest is attached.

I've never made my own masts before so I'm pretty excited I did these and the close ups really show how bad my hand painting is but I really do need to get one of those magnifying glass's with the lights, some of these parts are really small.
I've been looking at other peoples builds of Sydney and have made a couple changes/additions but I'm not going to town with it just getting it built is fun enough.
Anyway this has taken a few hours and a bottle of red to write so thanx for letting me share this here and any feedback appreciated.
Regards Callum

Thanx for the comment, Albatross has already gone to the UK as part payment for Hobart, plus she was in reserve from 1933 onwards and I was trying to pick ships that would have gone on a cruise together (I'm seeing this as a civilian port and the ships are just passing through showing the flag so to speak) I've also got Australia and an S class destroyer but I'm also space restricted so its been cut down to 3 ships.
Cheers Callum

Evening all, just a bit of an update after having been playing with the dock side cranes. Not quite finished but they are close.
I'm not really sure how to set up a ladder or stairs for access to the tall crane that would be realisticish but still they look cool
although they are not perfect.

Hi Callum,
didn't you know the universe in the late 1930's was black and white........ -:) ?
But seriously, theres' quite a few of them on truck-photos.net and museumvictoria.com.au.
Also, sometime full color pictures were taken in the late 1930's as early agfa and kodak color cameras did exist and were used.
Just paint your truck in matt colours instead of the nice and shiny finish they have in museums if you use pictures of a restored example as your reference.

That looks better :)
Thanks heaps for the links for the trucks Pieter, I wouldn't have a clue where to start looking for stuff like that
I'm not even sure if they would have used yellow back in the day but meh it will break up all the grey from the ships
and I still have to give a coat of matt to the little stuff the only thing i want glossy is the water the rest will be matt :)
and just to put Vampire in perspective

I'm just focusing on Sydneys bridge area back to the forward funnel, I'm having alot of fun on this and although my added on bits are rough and not quite accurrate it does make a big improvement to the kit. Can't wait to getting her finished though :)
Cheers Callum

afternoon all, well I've kinda let this post slip a bit, so I'll put a couple of photos to try a bring it up to date.
I stalled on the ships after the last post as I wasn't happy with the rigging on Vampire and have tried Uni Caenus fishing thread, damm that stuff is hard to see. I bought another Vampire kit with the intention of starting it again, but have ended up trying to modify one into HMAS Vendetta and have 2 destroyers instead. I have everything I need for the dio now since the last post had bugger all and I really think its looking the part. Still got a fair bit to do on it but I'm getting there.I'll add a list of everything I have used later on.For now its just an update.

So not upto the standards of the work from others on here (alot of which has been insperational for me wanting to do this project. ) But its getting there. Any comments or ideas or critisisms apreciated.
Cheers from Australia
Callum

Looks even better!

The buttons don't work due to a bug that resulted from a forum "update" a week or so ago. Just type in the [img]and[/img] tags manually.

Just a bit of progress to show HMAS Vampire and HMAS Vendetta complete. Vampire is attached to the board and just needs to be tied to the pier and gangways added, as well as more crew then I can attach Vendetta. I've had a few problems with the UNICaenus thread I've used for rigging and have ended up with to much glue in very seeable places, but hopefully practice makes perfect.

Hopefully more progress soon

Very, very nice. An excellent way to display multiple ships. Everything looks good, but I'm particularly struck by the port itself. Your buildings and other facilities are exceptional. The overall look is quite realistic.

Please keep posting your progress.

Thank you,

Mac

Thanks heaps for that Mac, its good encouragement'
Heres a bit more progress around the destroyers and this area is pretty close to finishing. The last photo shows how much of a mess I made with the glue doing the rigging on the Destroyers. Its a bit annoying really.

I'm pretty happy to have gotten it to this stage and I'm pretty keen for the rest of it.
Thanks for having a look and for the interest

Evening folks, I havn't updated this for a while and there is a bit of progress made with HMAS Sydney complete and on the dock. I'm procrastinating a bit with Canberra though but she is slowly coming along as well. Not to much more to go with this and I will be glad to get it finished but heres some pics on where the diorama is at.

Sydney's rigging looks very very good :thumbs_up_1: , and I like these tiny Vampires
A darker gray on horizontal lines between stanchions would help the railings look even thinner.
I also like the little tugs especially the one sailing alone, very nice!
