Hello there! :newbie:

About two months ago I started building my Flower.

Yes, yes...I know, it's an outdated kit (even with the "platinum" extras) with poor details and many errors, but I like it and I don't mind scratch building a bit. I also use some Great Little Ships PE sets to make it look nicer.

I started my building log on the flower class forum (all who searched for info about flowers been there), but this forum is no longer looked after and it's kinda depressing to be the only active user.
I found this forum after I seen the 1/200 Trumpeter Bismarck in my hobby shop...wondering if it was worth buying. I now know it is, but I'm afraid I lack the skills to make it look good, so I mothballed that idea...for now.

Okey, back to my Flower. I'll continue my WIP log here

This is where I am now....

The dinghy...about 64 parts...2 of them are kit parts :lol_1: Insert...GLS hedgehog

Image
Scratch build the engine room skylight and 2 pdr bandstand.

More soon :wave_1:

Oh..and uhmm...can I use the Dutch naval jack for my avatar?

Pffft, your Flower looks very good, crisp and clean. A scale 200 Bizzy is piece of cake for you...

No excuses, go and get it ... :heh:

Happy modelling ~ Olaf!

Thanks gents!

You both used the word "clean"...I know, she still is boringly clean. Still have to do the weathering, but I'll keep it light.
I use the available HMS Campanula photos as example.

Image

So far I only weathered the funnel casing items....funnel and vents, hedgehog and dinghies.

Image
note: canvas dodgers made from aluminium foil.

Image

Can always add more later on.

Now working on the bridge support struts. Scratchbuilding them from H, T and L brass strips. The 2 kit supplied options don't match the Campanula.

More soon :wave_1:

Oh, I think we both meant that there are no unwanted glue or paint blobs visible anywhere. Railings and guy wires are neat and straight, nothing seems to have been done in a rush. And... a weathered model can also be clean ... :wave_1:

Happy modelling ~ Olaf!

thanks!

Today I got hopelessly sidetracked from my planning (the darn bridge support), I build the mast and worked on the bridge deck instead.
For the mast I used (platinum PE and brass) kit parts, some GLS PE parts and I scratched the lower part of the mast from brass tube.
So it's a mix of all the available options. Still working on the GLS ladder, it's a nightmare to get rid of all the tabs.

I think I can glue the bridge deck on now.

Image

Waiting for the GLS Oerlikons, nothing wrong with the Revell PE/brass ones, but I'll use them on my next Flower. The Hr. Ms. Friso had 4.

More soon :wave_1:

Uhmmm...not. :faint:

When I did a dry fit with the asdic hut, I noticed the kit part has some issues.
The Campanula didn't had the window, so I made a riveted brass overlay, but since more is wrong... I decided to scratch the whole thing.

Image

ah well...

Received the GLS Oerlikons and depth charge set, so enough to keep me busy.

More soon :wave_1:

Thank you

Image
Looks like I won't use many kit parts for the bridge. Inserts: adding details and making of the window frames.
The clear (Z) sheet is by far the best kit part anyway...I used every bit of it

I checked loads of photos for the details, especially a photo of the HMS Clematis C type bridge (ShipCraft book, page 100).
Since I can't find this photo on the net, it's probably copyrighted (Imperial War Museum A8078).

More soon :wave_1:

wooden deck weathering...

The wooden decks look way too new and yellow I think, so I experimented a bit with different pigments...dry, wet, mixed with varnish, brushed on, fingers, cotton swabs, and what more. Revell provided me with plenty...otherwise useless...wooden decks, so enough material to abuse

After some trial and error I picked Vallejo Light Slate Grey (73113) and MIG Industrial City Dirt (P039). Used them dry...applied with a cotton swab.

Image
weathered bridge deck and a piece of clean wood.

Didn't dare to add more or use darker pigments, I'm afraid to go over the top...and I can't reverse what's done. Scary!

Hope it's okeyish.

This a good interesting build ,but I`m not looking at it too much as I might get tempted and get one of these kits ,I`ve too much on my plate already! :thumbs_up_1:
Just as an aside ,wasn`t Campanula one of the vessels the Nicholas Monsarrat served in?

Well done marvellous job

Regards Phil

thanks Phil!

Yes, but I heard that was before the refit of the Campanula (short forecastle).
I hope GLS will release their short forecastle conversion set some day.

To be honest...it's a crap kit, but since it's such a nice ship...it's worth the effort I think :joker:

Cheers!

Rob

I bought this kit years ago but it still sits, lonely and dark in its box. Are the extras available separately?

dunno, but you can ask Revell.

Check this....
http://www.djparkins.com/acatalog/Flower_Class_Corvette_-_Detail_Sets___Replacement_Fittings.html

David J. Parkins "Great Little Ships" (GLS) Flower Class corvette detail sets.

Highly recommended, great stuff and about the best customer service you can think off.

Not much worth showing today...maybe this:

spent most of my available time measuring beams and tried to figure out how to solve some kit issues...the usual :frown_2:

Finished the asdic hut support beams and did the armour shield in front of the wheelhouse.
Hedgehog glued on...H funnel to the bridge done. Did some weathering on places I can't reach later on and...weathered the wooden deck.
Image
I replaced the vertical kit beams with H strips

Image
weathering...hope it's not over the top :(

Image
I think the side panels were wood (not sure), so no rust there.

Image
The wooden deck. Also used some smoke black pigment to make it a bit more weathered then the bridge deck.
Most of the wooden deck behind the (not there yet) breakwater will disappear underneath the 4" gun bandstand.

more soon :wave_1:

Wow. I love the weathering. I keep wanting to move up to 1/350 but just don't have the confidence I could make a ship look so convincingly real.

What did you do?
