It's a lot of fun to build this ship, the imperfection of the kit can be your enemy, but it's my friend.
May sound strange, but no two Flowers were the same and with some research (and lots of evergreen) there's nothing that can't be fixed or scratched. The 1/72 scale is nice for this, I'm not very handy and certainly not an experienced scratch builder, but with this scale even I can manage.

What makes it even nicer...this doesn't feel like building a kit (glueing bits and pieces together, following the manual from start to finish)..it feels like I'm actually building a ship. Example..the bridge supports...the kit part is not only completely wrong, but also 2 dimensional....scratching this from H and T beams is fun...and it looks better I think.

There not many photos of the HMS Campanula...I only have 4, 3 of them are really good...even when enlarged to 300% they show details. For instance...the pom-pom bandstand...it has a non standard shape.

Image

Image

I find this exciting in an almost childish manner, seen nobody else do this. People tend to trust manuals I guess.
And then there is the GLS PE stuff. Some kit items are beyond repair and a pain to scratch...or simply far above my abilities.
The dinghies I managed, but the hedgehog, pom-pom and oerlikons...yikes! I can't scratch them. Hail GLS :worship_1:

I didn't fix all that's wrong, some issues I discovered too late, some others...I can't be bothered.

Just enjoying myself and forums like this are really helpful...since yesterday I cut PE on a hard surface and I now also use white glue for the tiny bits...thanks to this forum.

Oh...I figured out brass and plastic combined don't like significant sudden temperature changes. When I took the pom-pom bandstand outside to spray it with basecoat...."PWOING!!!!".
Hey! never too old to learn I spose :Oops_1:

Anyway...I enjoy myself building this amazing ship.

cheers people!

rob

Everything looks to be really nice FlowerPower. Makes me wish I had picked up this kit when I saw it at the hobby shop. I vaguely remember someone bringing up the build that was featured in the April 2012 issue of FSM, did you get a chance to check it out Glad you are keeping us well updated on the build. Looking forward to your next set of pics for her.

Bridge railing day.
Wasn't an easy day on the shipyard, expected to finish both sides, but I'm only halfway
Image
Took some effort to get the railing straight and drill the holes in the deck on the right spots.

Image
done! pfff....

Image

Other side tomorrow...blergh!

Looks better from a safe distance?

Scratch building the flag locker took me several days...this is Flag Locker Mark III...Mark I and II were failures :faint:
Image
With the curtain and 4 flag line eyelets...still about 20 flags to make...pffffffffff.

The locker is 18 mm wide, it has 84 slots. The open space next to the flag locker is for the life belt rack.
I'm still looking for images, the measurements and colour of the Royal Navy life belts.

More soon,

Rob :wave_1:

Yes me to.
Its a fine ship and you are doing it proud.

I know what you mean on failers Rob, but you seem to be cracking it. :wave_1:
I would suggest you leave some lockers empty, as in use.

Thanks gents!

The flags are still a dry fit, so I can remove the ones I'll fly.

Absolutly great Job until now ...
I have the Premiun Edition at home stored too, but I have really doubts to get it only nearly so nice and great as you did.
What I really love is that you go into smallest Detail everywhere too .... what shows at least, what all can be done and improved at this old kit! The flag locker is only an example! :thumbs_up_1: :wave_1:

thanks again

finished the life belt rack and staircase railing.

Image

Now want to do something I can actually see without my nose glued to my magnifying lamp :dead:

Might do the 4" gun and bandstand before I move to the rear...most of it will be scratch build. I can use the kit's brass barrel, but that's about it
:lol_pound: <<<hysterical laughter

More soon,

Rob :wave_1:

And there we go...the 4" gun and bandstand.

Image
Finished the gun base, now working on the bandstand.

The Campanula had a splinter shield around the bandstand instead of railings.
I'll make this...and the gun shield from 0,12mm brass sheet.

More soon,

Rob :wave_1:

I'd love to learn how to scratch build as well as you do, Rob.

Looks excellent.

Thanks, but I'm not even handy :lol_pound:

You won't believe how much Evergreen and brass I waste. Having epic problems cutting round disks.
Larger disks...like the 4" gun floor...I do with a divider that cuts through styrene, but that doesn't work for the small disks....bummer.

The bolts I did with a hex punch and die thingy.

I spend lots of time checking photos and books (mainly the Agassiz Flower Class anatomy book) and even more time wondering about how on earth to make something. Sometimes I just start and see where it goes...doesn't always turn out well :pout:

But...it's a lot of fun

The Campanula 4" gun bandstand...

Image

Clearly shows the splinter shield around the bandstand. Some Royal Navy Flowers (HMS Clematis for instance) had this instead of just the railing and sometimes a strip of mesh. Not seen the shield on Canadian build and refitted Flowers.
The shield was topped with a single rope rail

The front half of the Campanula shield was painted WA blue, rear half white. This continues on the gun shield.

I can't use the brass sheet I have...it's 26 cm long....just short of what I need. Ah well, Styrene sheet works fine also I guess.

The kit's gun is very basic, but I'll use the mount, breech and the (very nice) brass barrel. I'll modify the mount and breech where needed. Already scavenged some parts and PE from other kits for this. The gunshield I'll make from the brass sheet...glued on a frame made from evergreen. The 1/48 scale plans of the gun in the Agassiz book are great and it's not too complicated to scratch.

more soon

:wave_1:

by the way...I feel tremdously stupid, because I just noticed the Campanula galley funnel doesn't run up along the engine funnel. How could I miss that? :pout:

Finished the tub....
Image
Well, that wasn't too difficult

First made the inside rim. Easier to drop it in with the shield on, but this way I got more surface to glue the shield in place...and much easier to get the shield straight.

The breakwater part of the shield is still a bit too high...need to sand off about 1,5mm to make the platform sit flat on it's base.
I can now make the supports from U-beams, railings, ladders and the ready for use shell holders.

Two good close up examples of Flowers with the bandstand shield...

Image
HMS Vervain (note: rounded gun shield, note2: lowered rope rail, note3: pipe rail on the rear of the tub)

Image
HMS Clematis (note: square gun shield, no pipe rail here)

Not used my magnifying lamp for this....woot!

more soon,

Rob :wave_1:
