Thanks PG

Image

putting the shield on the gun was somewhat nerve wrecking...6 internal PE brackets and very little room to adjust them to a good fit. Some scary bending was needed to get it all done...some more scary bending to get the shield sit straight, but in the end...a fairly decent result I think.

I must now make the blast bag before I can continue painting...tissue paper and white glue I guess.

Edit:

Watching glue dry is relaxing

I soldier on...more soon.

A question re the over scale keel. Have shaved off the bow and shaped to a sharper form. Did you remove the keel flush with bottom?
Methinks this has to be done.

You're absolutely right....the bow is way too thick and the keel on the bottom should be flat...on top of this, the Revell bilge keels are too long.

I discovered this too late and to be honest...I don't bother too much about it, because the lower hull is painted black and it's not eye catching because of it (excuses...excuses...I know).

I have another Flower in the pipeline...I plan to go all the way with that one...including adjusted keels and bow...and I'll rivet the whole darn thing.

The second Flower will be done next to other builds, because it's bordering to insanity and it's outright torture to do two in a row I think.

Nice kit, but tough and tough to stay focused...sooooooo much to fix and scratch build. Even though I did a fair amount of research, I still discover things I missed. Just to name two...the Campanula probably didn't had the "archway" underneath the radar tower and the galley funnel didn't run up the engine funnel. Ahh well...I still think "my" Campanula comes close to the real thing. Bridge supports, 4" gun bandstand, pom-pom bandstand (I'm really proud of that one  ), the 2 small H-funnels in front of the 4"gun, adjusted asdic hut, position of the Lewis guns, canvas dodgers (partly) on the funnel casing, engine room skylight, and much more still to do...like the non standard carley float positions. Still far from perfect, but I try my best

nice blast bag :thumbs_up_1: it is not a critic ,just for me, a little more "folds" (plis in french??) would be even better than better  but ,the whole is really very convincing,a beautiful personal work :thumbs_up_1:

the cigarette paper stuck to the wood glue,or with cyano is good for this type of work

thanks again

Still some jobs to do there...ladders, shell holders (might do ammo lockers instead) and the rope for the rope stanchions.

Can now move on and do the 3 davits, rope reels, anchor winch, anchors and railings.
Looking forward to move to the rear of the ship....it's still barren wasteland there.

More soon.

The anchor windlass...one of those projects I kept postponing, because I simply don't have a clue how to do it.
The kit's windlass is one of the worst parts of the kit, can't use anything of it

The drawings in the Agassiz book are good, so there is hope.... I just started and see where it ends...

Image
1/72 scale Tiger II wheels, evergreen, brass rods and tube and model putty.
Finished the shafts, gypsies (chain drums), gears and base plate...so far so good I think.
Next will be the steam pistons, side frames and warping drums.

hope to finish this...and the remaining bow stuff...next week

Edit:
Image
Made the outer frames and added another gear (overlooked at first). the small centre gear on the chain drum axle.
There's also an inner frame, it's exact shape isn't completely clear to me, so I'll use common sense for that.
Drilled the chain pipes too much forward, so I'll fill them and drill new holes

LE BOSCO kindly offered to turn the warping drums for me, I'll give it a try myself first, but his skills surpass mine by a mile or two, so perhaps I need his help :thumbs_up_1:

More soonish

Rob :wave_1:

Minor update...

Image

Wasn't happy with the warping drum axle, so I made a new one, drilled new chain pipe holes, made the inner frames and did the whole steam thing. (cylinders, piston rods, crank disks, reverse handle, steam valve handles and flanges). So far...53 parts.

Had to basecoat the whole thing black, because it's not possible to reach all corners for painting after construction and it's good pre-shading I guess.

Next will be the band brake handles, the clutch handles, steam input and exhaust pipes, warping drums and what more...total amount of parts when finished...141

Glad when it's all done and I hope it's worth the hassle

More soon.

Rob :wave_1:

I would be floored not to see this win some sort of award, with all your improvisation and scratch building. I love what you've done with such an old ship.

Thanks PG

but...I'm not a member of a modelling club and I'm too afraid to move it anywhere when it's finished.

We ordered a new bookcase for the living room and...after a debate with the boss...one section of the bookcase will have 100cm shelves instead of the standard 80cm. So I feel lucky to get a shelf large enough to display my Flower. I wisely avoided to mention the 1/72 scale U-boote collection (and another Flower) in my stash. I'll fight that battle when it becomes an issue. For now...I count my one shelf blessing

I'm feeling like I'm building beyond my capabilities at the moment, some will say...good! that's called improvement, learning and pushing boundaries, but right now I just feel like I'm hopelessly lost...and I don't enjoy it.

I really like to do what I can to make this build look good, but what I do now feels like I do stuff...I actually can't do. (this makes sense?).

Right now I'm bogged down building this darn little anchor windlass. Is it healthy to stare at it for days...gathering the courage to proceed? It's not like like I don't know what to do...or even how to do it...it's more like I do stuff because it has to be done to make it look good...but it's beyond my skill level...oir at least far away from my comfort zone.

The problem is (I'm rambling)...I'm a perfectionist without the skills to make something look perfect.
Even when people say it's nice....I feel half ashamed to show what I done....I know it's not perfect. Yet I show what I do...it keeps me going. Encouragement and nice words do help (silly huh?)...looking at other builds (espionage!) is helpful, but It's also dangerous. I see builds that baffle me. How on earth people get these tiny PE parts in place so nicely, while I struggle to glue bulky brass rods where they belong...instead of to my fingers and/or tweezers?

anyway...enough moaning...
Image

More soon...pffff

Rob,

I totally get what you're getting it. Seeing some of the builds on this site is a bit intimidating, but you have to focus on what you've done. If I may hazard a bit of flattery, what you've done with that Revell kit is turn a plastic bathtub toy into a work of art. You've taken some risks, sure, but they're paid off.

If you mess up a small detail, who cares? You can rebuild, worst case. Honestly, I'd have trouble seeing this as anything short of a show winner.

Keep up the good work man.

Flower, I think your build looks absolutely wonderful.

Although I can't speak for anyone but myself, I understand the feeling your having because I have it to with my build. Truthfully mine is the first build I have ever publically shown, its a scary thing for me.

Yes, you may be a perfectionist, but you are probably a realist too knowning it won't be perfect. So you are striving for excellence which is a very good thing. Some people only aim low and will only hit low or not at all. You are aiming high so there is a greater chance you will hit high, but if you hit medium on some things that is still good too.

I'm enjoying your build and wish I had some of your abilities. Lets face it, we all have our dog days.

Honestly, I get your feeling (the perfectionism blockade).

That said, there might be some who post here who are above your level, when looking at the models in real life. But based on the pictures, you have NOTHING to be ashamed of (to say the least). Indeed, from what the pictures have shown us, your work rivals that of what I consider to the very best posted on here - even if they work in other scales, and some of them have more developed skills (designing and making their own PE and such) than you might have - in the WIP as well as the foto gallery.

Not only are your construction skills top notch, but so far you have shown your painting skills definitely do it justice as well, and enhance whatever you have built.

To be honest, if I ever get around to building again, this will be one of the threads and models I will look at for inspiration.

So, IMHO, keep it up, and do not feel you are not good enough to see it through to the end. You definitely are!!!
