thanks guys...sorry about the whining...it just got to me, but I shouldn't complain, because it's my own fault. I knew what was waiting for me even before I opened the box. Took another short break from it, back now.

LE BOSCO kindly offered to make the warping drums on his lathe for me, but I think I have to do it myself.
Inspired by the lathe idea, I used my Proxxon (German Dremel thing) flex shaft and used it as a poor mans lathe.
I need 6mm and 8mm disks...more 1/72 scale Dragon panzer wheels sacrificed...the 6mm disks are JgdPzIV road wheels and the 8mm ones are TigerII road wheels reduced to what I need.
Image
poor mans lathe

Image
Made the clutch handles from brass rod and scrap PE...not yet cut to size.
And the warping drums...some putty and I'll sand them to the right shape using my newly invented lathe :cool_2:

I'll finish the darn thing tomorrow...and find another daemon to slay

More soon...thanks again.

Rob :wave_1:

Man, the sheer awesomeness here is really impressive! You are going to have one hell of a masterpiece when you are done with this one. Attention to detail is putting it mildly.

Thanks gents! too much honour really.

This is the final result...it wont get any better.
Image
Note: the breakwater sticking out...don't panic...it's all just a dry fit

Took me 2 weeks or so, but it had to be done, because the kit provided windlass is beyond bad and even though it's just 1 inch by 1 inch...it's still one of the eye catchers (not much else happening on the bow deck).

I'll now do the other stuff there...some more scratch building...anchor chain locks, rope reels, ladders to the gun tub, the two side davits and the ammo davit. The Revell PE railings are fine I think, I take the flatness for what it is. Paint will give it some body I guess...hope.

I have a question about rope railings...on photos the ropes show white. are they painted steel cables or white ropes?

More soon, but I won't bore you guys with each and every small item, so it will take a while I guess.

Rob :wave_1:

It doesn't need to be better: looks real as is.

Nice as always, Rob.

thanks guys

Made the rope reels...Evergreen sheet, tube and strips, brass rod, aluminium tube, steel wire and scrap PE.
It's a working reel, the crank handles are removable. I waxed the ropes with brown-black furniture bee wax to give the ropes a greasy wet look.
Image
Insert: Revell/Monogram reel :Mad_6:

More soon :wave_1:

Rob

The Revell shell holders are no good and the GLS shell holders are insanely difficult to build....4 tiny parts with some crazy folds (poor or no fold lines to make things worse). Over 30 to make :faint:
Image
I'll do one a day...maximum (likely less)....or I'll go insane. This means the gun tub will be ready end of summer :lol_pound:

I tried to modify the kit's anchors, but when I checked the Campanula photos...I need a different type of anchor....I need a Hall type 3 anchor. Luckily there loads of anchors available, so I ordered 2 nice looking Hall 3s...together with some working brass bottle screw tensioners for the anchor locks.

Made the gun tub ladders from Evergreen and the ladder railings from brass wire. Used 0.3mm brass tube to make the ropes for the gun tub railings....easy to bend and work with. Also made the davits from scratch.

Since the bow will take much longer because of those darn shell holders I think I move aft a bit. still have to finish the mast and I'll do the 2 pounder pom-pom.

When I started this build in February I expected to finish it about... uhmmm...now, but I'm afraid October is more realistic. Some jobs slow me down and some jobs drain my energy so I need a break now and then.

nonetheless... more soon :wave_1:

Rob

Hi Rob,

Great stuff.

I tried to send you a PM with pictures of my Gloxinia but the forum server decided it was spam and kicked it all out the park.... ho hum.

Keep up the good work.

Hi Rob,

Here are some more with a little bit of progress:-

Image

Image

Image

As you will know Gloxinia had a unique bridge and, as there are only two photos of her, my build is way open to interpretation.

However, I have been building from the Agassiz Anatomy book and scaling everything up. Just last week a guy in the club said he had some old plans was anyone interested. I said yes, and amongst the various others was..... ye gads.... 48th scale plans for the HMS Aubretia, built here on the Clyde by Browns....

Image

Checking my model against the plans I was amazed that I wasn't very far out with some of my dimensions.

All the best
Sandy

Not sure of your skill level, but the author of this thread suggested contacting "Great Little Ships" in the UK.
The full set, which is expensive, but well worth it, includes complete replacement decks. Other options include
replacements of (almost) every kit part. It consists of extensive PE frets, resin and white metal replacements.
I am well into building the Snowberry option, but the GLS includes the option of building Bluebell.
The website is www.djparkins.com and the email is djparkins@aol.com. Can't recommend it more highly, but it
requires a clear mind to follow the very detailed instructions. If you wish to remove the moldings on the kit parts,
i used a chisel shaped blade (sharp as possible).
Where in Oz do you live?. I reside in Sydney.

I took the plank detail off the deck by "shaving" with a Stanley knife blade on the more open areas and with a wood chisel around the location points for the superstructure and bollards etc.
