The Kitty Hawk and Constellation have the same hull as the Forrestal's up to the hanger deck. They were both supposed to be Forrestal's but lessons learned were to re-arrange the Flight deck. I think that America and JFK were the same hull as well. If you hold the hulls bottom to bottom they are about the same size, but not quite. I just checked an 1/720 Italeri Ranger and an America. To me the Kitty Hawk seems under scaled in 1/720 as well but I have not been able to verify that.

I really wish that we could get a nice 1/700 Forrestal Class Kit out there along with America and JFK. The Fujimi Kitty Hawk and Conny are pretty nice kits.

For a 1/350 scale Kitty Hawk or Forrestal, you can take a 1/350 Enterprise Hull and cut around a 3 to 4" section out of the middle to get a hull shaped correctly from the hanger deck down. You would have to scratch build above the hanger all of the sponsons, flight deck, and island. A pretty major undertaking. I purchased a set of plans for Conny and Ranger to do just that. I am going to use one of the knock off Mini Hobby Enterprise kits for the base hull.

Hello, I am a member of Task Force 72. I am starting my research to build a 72nd scale USS Constellation CV63. I am after photos when she was in the gulf in 02/03. I am looking for photos of the props and rudders as well. My hull is being made here in Australia by Tim Amos.

Any photos of her would be appreciated.

Pawly,

Just a quick heads-up, CVA-63 is the Kitty Hawk, the Constellation is CVA-64

Pawly, Do you have any pictures yet from Tim about your model?
I was able to get some pictures of the Frunze I'm building from Tim's Kirov Hull.
One other thing Who's Pawly?

Correct, I am doing CVA64, not CVA63, thanks Mike.

Tim will be starting the hull construction next year. I have sent home the plans, I do not think there will be any photos as yet. Pawly is Peter from the FLEET BASE WEST arm of TF72.

Thanks Peter. Has Tim given you any idea how much it will cost? PM me if you wish. I have a friend here in Tumut that's interested in a big Yank Carrier. Might be able to talk him into one if cost is OK. Plenty of time to sort that out later.
I'll be at TF72 GW (Naracorte) next weekend and the week after in the Blue Mts if I survive the trip to SA that is. Should get heaps of pictures at these events. Last weekend was a bit of a wash out at Canberra :-( Still it was a good drive to catch up with fellow members.

Pawly,
For a day and 1/2 I've been thinking about your 1/72 "Connie", man that is a huge project. Unless my math is way off, that thing is going to be 14 1/2 feet long. Actually, under the current admin. in the US she is for sale (I mean the real ship), it would probably cost you less than trying to pay for the materials to build a 1/72 scale model, Obama loves the dole not the military.

Being serious, if you really want to pursue this project, I would happy to help in any way I can. I live about an hour east of the National Museum of Naval Aviation in Pensacola Florida. They have a library/archives that are so in depth there is literally nothing regarding naval aviation/aircraft carriers etc. that a person cannot find. I am over there frequently and would be happy to help if you have any questions, need scans, whatever.

I'm currently working on the Saratoga, CVA-60, and these guys have been a huge asset.

My email is on site let me know if you need any assistance.

Mike Lee

Hi Mike, thanks for your comments and soon to need help. I work in milli/meters here in OZ, so she will be roughly 4500mm long by 1100mm at her widest point. I have other 72 scale projects underway at the moment, an FFG - HMAS Darwin, an LCH - HMAS Wewak, USNS Hiddensee and HMAS Anzac. My plan is to have DARWIN, ANZAC and CONNIE sail in formation ( flight op's) as was done while I was on DARWIN in the gulf 2003. That is a few years off yet - HMAS Darwin is nearly finished and I haven't started HMAS Anzac as yet.

I got some good reference photos of Forrestal as she was leaving Philly for the scrapyard this morning. I've posted a couple on Flickr tonight. Many more to come.

Here's a few of USS Kitty Hawk CV-63 from 2006-2008 at the pier in Yokosuka. The pics are form the NAVY's website, & through a search in their photo gallery you could probably find more... Just search "George Washington Yokosuka" & "Kitty Hawk Yokosuka"... The pics I've posted here are small in size, but I do have the hi-rez versions of them I could send you. If you don't want to get them off of the NAVY site...

Thomas

The ex-carrier Ranger is set to make its final sea voyage in early 2015.

The Navy paid 1 cent for shipbreakers to tow and scrap the decommissioned aircraft carrier, which once launched combat missions in the Vietnam War and Operation Desert Storm, Naval Sea Systems Command said Monday.

"Under the contract, the company will be paid $0.01. The price reflects the net price proposed by International Shipbreaking, which considered the estimated proceeds from the sale of the scrap metal to be generated from dismantling," the NAVSEA release said. "$0.01 is the lowest price the Navy could possibly have paid the contractor for towing and dismantling the ship."

The Ranger is to be towed from its berth in Bremerton, Washington, to Brownsville, Texas, where International Shipbreaking Ltd. is based. The carrier will have to be towed around South America, a four to five month journey, as its too large to fit through the Panama Canal, NAVSEA said.

The Ranger was commissioned in 1957 and spent its entire 36-year career in the Pacific, making a total of 22 Western Pacific deployments, NAVSEA said.

The dismantlement comes after veterans' and historical groups were unable to raise enough money to turn the Ranger into a museum, like The Intrepid Museum in New York City. The Ranger had been on donation hold for eight years.

"After eight years on donation hold, the USS Ranger Foundation was unable to raise the necessary funds to convert the ship into a museum or to overcome the physical obstacles of transporting her up the Columbia River to Fairfview, Oregon," NAVSEA said. "As a result, the Ranger was removed from the list of ships available for [donation] and designated for dismantling."
