Calling all Russian submarine fans

The lines on the propellor are a common thing, they are caused by polishing of the propellor, very likely this sub was in the water for a while for fitting out. At that moment the underwater hull gets fouled, including the prop, since it's not turned while alongside. After fitting out and sea trials, before hand-over to customer, the ship is dry docked, propellor cleaned and polished and occasionally the whole ship or at least underwater part, repainted for the customer.

Thank you for the explanation. They stand out in that picture (lighting?) so it seemed rather odd.

Hi Viper, I�ve got an Alfa / Lira from Micro Mir. You are right, is marginally better than the HB kit:

Pros:
closed limber holes.
PE vortex generator and creeper screw blades.
PE windshield with opened windows, it can be folded in the middle to sandwich a clear acetate window, instead of the "blind" one provided by HB. So I�ll use one of those halves and put some Humbrol clear fix instead of the acetate film. The other PE half will go to my current HB Alfa I�m finishing.
Decals are more accurate, more number options and different sizes. Thinner depth marks than HB.
Shapewise, it does look slightly more accurate than HBs.

Cons:
Injected parts are thicker and rougher.
All hatches on the sail are closed with the exception of the cockpit.
I�m partial, but I prefer the recessed panelling of the HB kit.

I�ll build both, but first I must finish my HB version. I�ll take a vacation from russian subs to start a type 214 or 212, and finish my USS Wahoo (SS 565.)

Good thing it comes with PE versions of the props so you can bend them whichever way is accurate

Wow, it looks as if the blade skew angle is backwards on both, yes? Someone wasn't thinking when the built the mold...

Hello everybody. This is my first post. I have a question for a diorama i am preparing based on 1/350 hb borei close to polar pack. Western subs use a simple gangboard to land / disembark sailors when emerging by the pole (i.e. The one shown below)

i did not find any photo of the gangboard used by russian subs when landing on pole ice. I think they do not use the official gangboard with handrails and name of the ship visible while they are in port, since i think such gangboard is stored in port, not onboard. Can anybody help me?

Quick question time.

With the Hobby Boss Alfa class kit, the painting guide says the hull underside is black with the lower bow silver. I've also seen the Alfa's depicted with the lower hull in Red. Which is correct?

When I painted mine, I did a little research and ended doing an educated guess.
Unfortunately the best color pictures of those subs were taken at their decommissioning with their hulls so worn out and covered by saltpeter and barnacles, that is impossible to tell color accurately.
I do believe that at some point at their careers some where painted with their bottom half with red antifoul, as some eastern European kits specify in their painting guides, like in this example

So does anyone know if the admiralty mododelworks Foxtrot is superior to the Polar Bear kit? I have just started collecting the Polar Bear kits to round out my 1/350 submarine collection, (since these seem to be the only models I ever finish...) and I noticed the admirality one on Freetime.

According to Russian forums and the memories of shipbuilders from Severodvinsk, several of the boats were in "all black" color and the rest with antifouling red-brown paint on the underwater side of the body. The waterline (in white) was very thin and sometimes difficult to see. There were no any silver or "other kind" of red color for depicting the sonar during their service life.

Hello folks

I have just joined this group after stumbling across this thread via another link.

I am building a 1/32 scale Akula boat, Samara, and there are some details I am desparate to find out. I wrote to the shipyard using snail mail but did not get a reply, although I never thought I would, but one hopes. When I have figured out how, I will post a couple of pics of the model on site.

Due to the unavailability of a 1/32 scale screw, I have made a mock up one out of plastic for display and will use a kort nozzle for RC propulsion. As the mock up one came up rather well for shape I will make a better looking one to replace it later on. The boat is a long way from going into the water, years that is, but I am in no hurry.

I picked up some 1/35 scale Russian soldiers, appropriately dressed, to be converted into the boat's bridge crew atop the fin.

However, the details I seek concern;
the arrangement of hatches, in particular the way the deck hatches for the berthing lines open, the internal detail of the hatches and how they work;
which way do the torpedo tube and the decoy tube outer doors open and the shape of the decoys themselves.

Photos, or a source, showing the general arrangement of the torpedo/decoy tube mountings, the torpedo reloading hatch and the bow sonar would be most useful.
