Asphalt? Do you mean linoleum? Almost EVERY deck on the ship has linoleum tiles on it. Ones that sees frequent traffic anyway. The Mess spaces, berthing, bridges, just about the entire superstructure, etc... The MAR DET had theirs painted red by the way in all of their offices and berthing spaces. In any of the electronics spaces however you have blue anti-static tiling all over the deck. Looks like linoleum but is a bit rubbery to the touch, IE has some spring to it. The conning tower decks are painted steel however.
The wood paneling on the bridges is only under the windows. All of it is removable (you'll notice a few missing) so you can access the gear mechanisms that operate the windows. I'm not aware what the other BBs have on their bridges as the only other BB I've been to is BB-63 and her bridges were closed that day for painting
I'm also pretty sure the wood panels are veneer over some sort of laminate, IE read as cheap furniture panels
I'd imagine the Nav Bridge deck was deck blue when it was open (BB-61 and 62 only). No idea how they would have treated it once they enclosed them. Tracy could probably answer that one right?
Only other wood paneling that I've found aboard is in guest staterooms that are near where the Flag cabin USED to be on the 02 Level. They moved it down to the 01, across from the Capt's In Port Cabin in the 1980's at least for BB-64. BB-62 still has guest cabins there as did the whole class prior to the 1980's refit. Not sure how they handled the other ships. The Flag Cabin on the 02 became the Combat Engagement Center (CEC) because the CIC was too small to install all of the computers/consoles for the TLAMs and Harpoons, or at least that's what I've heard... The CIC was still certainly used and was fully renovated in the 1980's. Just not sure what its role was with a CEC aboard considering the CEC is where the TAO and possibly the Capt would be during GQ. Anyone know?
Every office I've seen is pure steel furniture and all of the galley equipment and anything to do with food is all stainless steel including all of the counters. I think the library might have some wood veneer on some desks but I can't remember.
You can't get a real idea just how big these ships are unless you go aboard and REALLY explore them especially below decks. Just love finding those hatches on the 2nd deck that go ALLLLLL the way down to some random void or bilge tank that have nothing but vertical ladders on each level. They go down so far that even my Mag Light can't penetrate to the bottom. THOSE are just down right scary and why the general public will never get access to the whole ship!
It took me a few months to learn my way around on the tour routes and the areas we have open and that only amounts to maybe 20% of the interior IF that. Imagine being some kid from the mid west that's never seen the ocean before let alone a BB and sailing for WWII after reporting aboard!
