Have you tried search for "ddg 67" on the Navy's gallery? http://www.navy.mil/viewGallery.asp

Don't include the dash between DDG and 67, as official Navy regulations state there's no dash, and thus all captions/photo descriptions follow that rule.

Hi,

What’s the best Photoetch Set (from Eduards) to use on DDG-92 USS Momsen Arleigh Burke Class Destroyer produced by Hobbyboss (Ref. 83413) at 1/700 scale?
Image

DDG-92 has superstructure differences to accommodate the Remote Mine-hunting System (RMS) and due to this modification, the Mk 32 torpedo tubes were moved to the missile deck from amidships as well.

Some useful links about this model:

Thanks.

I'm building this kit right now as the Bainbridge. The BigBlueBoy set is excellent. Next I would opt for the the Flyhawk set.

Hi,

I just realize Hobbyboss model includes 2 sets and not just 1 set of PE parts, which includes the rails.
Image

That's enough for me regarding PE details, and enough also to build a nice looking model!
BTW, my model is due to arrive by the end of the month.

Thanks.

Hello all

Fresh from the press as they say...USS Cole on March 28th 2014 in Scotland! Compare this to the sunny pics from Hawaii...The northern Atlantic during winter is the total opposite of that. Should give the master modeller a good idea on how much even a modrn ship can be weathered...

This direct link leads to the full resolotion picture...it's huge http://s5.photobucket.com/user/anj4de/m ... 7.jpg.html

Not unusual for a US warship... Back when I was Navy some of the US ships we visited were in a shocking state up close.

...does that happen to you folks as well? You start looking at pictures and in my case yesterday at a teribble movie (Battleship) and all of a sudden you get that itch...and so it happened, I pressed the button on a Cole! :heh: Not going to start her right away...but at least have her and fiddle around with the kit is already nice. Another one for the pile...and for my retirement...in 11 years if all goes well...

cheers
Uwe

The Navy just posted this photo taken on board USS Donald Cook in the Black Sea, exercising with some Romanian ships.

Anyone know what the cylindrical canisters fore and aft of the liferaft canisters are on board the Cook? They weren't on her when she arrived at Rota earlier this year.

Not sure about the canisters but there was a report on the web about Donald Cock a couple days ago...on a Russian page I think ...that a single Russian SU-24 plane, unarmed but with the latest ECM kit on board, knocked out the AEGIS system and made the ship blind! According to the page the destroyer had to enter a Rumanian port for repairs...

For what it's worth...?

cheers
Uwe

They look very similar to decoy launchers on British Type 23 and Type 45 ships (forward of the bridge).

See e.g. here on HMS Richmond:

I am not sure what kind of decoy is launched from them (anti torpedo?).

They are DLF-3 inflatable decoy canisters.

DLF-3 is a rapid response, inflatable, passive radio frequency (RF), floating countermeasure system that is ship deployed and effective against radar homing missiles and surveillance radars. DLF-3 is the Primary Seduction Decoy for the UKs Royal Navy and is currently fitted to Type 22 and 23 Frigates and Type 42 Destroyers. In addition, the decoy is provisioned for on the UKs Future Destroyer , the Type 45.

Thank you for the information, what kind of decoy launchers these are!

There are no Type 22 and Type 42 ships still in commission ;) They were fitted to them and the Type 45 destroyer are equipped with them. See e.g. HMS Defender:

Not being british I'm not up todate with what ships are still in or out of the RN, but the type 22's and 42's did have them - the birth of the DFL's so to speak. Mainly fitted to british ships and some NATO ships as the case with the AB's. I know the USS Winston Churchill as of late last year didn't have them fitted though, so maybe the US have them for trial?

The note about the Cook's Aegis suite being disabled by an ECM pod is interesting. We will see what comes of that.

Also, the topic of the Mk71 8" gun had been coming up. If the Donald Cook would have been fitted or back fitted with a Mk71, it would have a gun capability challenging the Harpoon ASCM. One may say "Oh, well it appears only 204 8" rounds could be carried..."

My rebuttals is: So what? What about the 32 rounds that would have been equal/superior to the Harpoon?

204 8" rounds is a lot preferable to the crap the 5" throws.

Wasn't the mk71 8inch canned as it was inaccurate and no more effective than the 5inch?

Maybe officially in the 1970s, but since the classified reports have come out, it has turned out that the Mk71 was 3 times more accurate than the Mk42 and Mk45 5" guns.

The original decision to can the Mk71 program came from Senator Proximire. There is no non-political reason the gun was canned. It was 100% politically canned. That was a HUGE indication when the USN stepped away from war fighting to being administrative driven. It remains today.

I still think with the modern ASW solutions an 8 inch would be overkill and Navy being political? That's not just the USN.

The report I saw on Aegis being knocked out on the Cook, also claimed 27 crew members resigned out of fear for their lives. Not what I would call likely.
