This would have been a great submarine!

Not very practical if the enemy have any kind of ASW capability but imagine it rising out of the sea off an enemy coast!

No, but I suppose they were thinking of a situation like Guadalcanal where the US did not control the sea or air. Of course as this is post-war that did not apply so I assume that is why it was dropped.
