Dan a belated bucket load of thanks to you once again.

Probably not the place for it but other than the shop in Tokyo, does anyone know a western supplier of Pit Road warship paints, particularly color ref PC17A or PC17B?

regards

I'll add to that. Does anyone know a good supplier in the USA for Pitroad, Skywave kits. Freetime Hobbies does not have all the latest stuff.

Just saw the new anime movie called "The Wind Rises" in theatres today. It's about Jiro Horikoshi, the designer of Japan's famous Zero fighter during World War II.

Plot and drama aside, one prominent scene of the movie featured the carrier HOSHO during aircraft landing trials for an aircraft fighter prototype.

IMHO, the amount of detail the movie's animators put into recreating the scenes on this small carrier made me wonder if there is 1/350 model kit-or larger- that is out of there, of this carrier in her late mid to late 1930s form...

Not sure why you'd think an anime appearance would mean the existence of a large-scale kit, but there is a 1/400 paper kit of the Hosho that you can scale up: http://www.ecardmodels.com/index.php/1- ... model.html

Perhaps I should made myself clearer: the "cameo" of the ship in the film inspired me to build a 1/350 version of the ship... if the kit exists.

During the late 1990s when I was still a teenager, I did try to build the 1/700 Fujimi kit of the Hosho in her original configuration... with unimpressive results.

Does anyone know how Junyo's flight deck looked at the time of her commissioning in May 1942? Especially, what ID symbol she had, and where was it located? TIA for any info!

Hey everyone. I just got a boat load of 1/700 ships already built in the mail. Problem is the packaging wasn't done very well and all the ships had parts broken off. One of the ships is the Tamiya Shinano. Does anyone have any spare parts, metal barrels, or photo etch they can get rid of so I can fix this lady up?

At this point I'm looking to buy spare PE off of people and what I can't get here I'll get online. Just don't want to break the bank.

Here is a link to a thread I put on Trading Post. viewtopic.php?f=15&t=156276

Well, I have a lot of spare equipment set parts, as well as PE. In fact, I think I have a complete Eduard PE set for Shinano as well. So, the more specific you are, the more helpful I can be (possibly).

Why isn't there a dedicated IJN CVE thread?

The closest I could find was Ajkochev's 1:700 Chuyo thread which hasn't been updated for a while.

I do have one question though to keep this thread going: Are Aoshima's Chuyo and Unyo kits essentially each just a rebox of the Taiyo kit? (Or vice-versa) Or did Aoshima actually take into account minor differences among the three, if any?

No one has started such a thread so, this is the default thread. I'm not sure how much specific interest there is in this class.

There isn't that much differentiation between the kits; some different armament and fit pieces between them, but it's basically the same kit.

Dan,

It seems that Chuyo did carry camo, since I read Kanji for the the bottom carrier scheme as "Chuyo".

Unyo as well. Note that Chuyo carries an enclosed, powered 12.7 twin turret aft the funnel on the starboard side, much like the larger CVs. Her sister carried a single open mount.

I have a couple of questions regarding Ryujo and Taiyo.

First of all, in my recent house move, I seem to have lost my WEM IJN Grey guide booklet, can anyone tell me what IJN Grey she would have be in prior to Pearl Harbour and if there was any change before she was sunk.

The model of Ryujo I'm making is the new(ish) Fujimi kit, which depicts her after the second 'rebuild' where the fo'csle was raised a deck. It has Ryujo armed with 6 quad 13mm machine guns and 2 twin 25mm guns. My second question is, when were the quad 13mm replaced by 25mm guns and what 25mm mounts was she carrying and where, after this was done.

Regarding Taiyo, I acquired the Aoshima 1/700 kit with etch flight deck a while ago and I can replace many of the kit parts with superior parts but I've not seen any IJN single 4.7 inch guns, are there any aftermarket ones available?

thanks
Mike

I've remembered the combined fleet website, which answers the questions about Ryujo but not about aftermarket single (unshielded) 4.7 inch guns for the Taiyo, anyone have a clue about them?

Further to my questions about Ryujo, the combined fleet website says there was a third refit, which narrowed the flight deck in part, my question now is, was there much difference before and after the refit and would it be noticeable on a 1/700 model?

thanks
Mike

Aftermarket 4..7"/12cm single mounts are available from PitRoad.

The original E-38/E-2 DD accessory set has them but they are somewhat overscale and not entirely correct.

The E-7 Early DD and small escort accessory set has them in droves but, barrel is oversized and needs replacement by brass rod.

The new NE-03 set has them as well (only one per tree), but they are beautifully rendered, and correct. It does come with the shield as seen on the CAs but, you don't use it.
