Are the masts scratch built?
The set on ebay from ss-model doesn't seem to show any PE for the masts

Yes, masts are scratched out of .010 brass rod and various sizes of copper wire.Land_shark wrote:Are the masts scratch built?

Anthony, you have inspired me to dust my old kit off the shelf and build it, after all these years. Great work!!

An update. Yahagi08 shows the torpedo launchers before the aircraft deck is placed overhead. It was detailed and slightly weathered now since it would be impossible later. I made a small dio of figures loading a torpedo into one of the launchers, I didn't realize the deck would cover so much. It really cannot be seen. =(

Well, it's nice to know it's there
you put a lot of detail in there, it's looking very good!

Progress as of Oct 3. I loved Jeff Lin's recent build with the spent shell casings on the deck from the Type 96 AA, That I decided to try and do it in 1/700 since I was going for part of a action dio with this build(Need a Yukikaze to go next to it). Not near as good as Jeff's casings in 1/350. I still have a flat coat and weathering of the ship to do so maybe I can make them more realistic in the end. Live and learn.

Hi Anthony......Where are you getting your .010 stock from ? I'm not having any luck locally, K&S and Free-Time have a $25 minimum order for it.

Try to use string from electric guitar. They have wonderfull straight shape and are far stronger than brass. Diameters from 0.28mm up to 0.5mm. Work perfectly for masts and sailings. And they are cheap...Pagodaphile wrote:Hi Anthony......Where are you getting your .010 stock from ? I'm not having any luck locally, K&S and Free-Time have a $25 minimum order for it.

Rod and tube not hard to find. Do search for albion alloys, sold all over the place. try aircraft and armor shops. shops like lucky model . bna modelworld. Hannants. for a start

Re: 1/700 IJN Yahagi 1945(Tamiya)
I used to get my .010 Brass from a LHS that had it but they ran out and haven't stocked in years, I was starting to get desparate. Recently I found my local Hobby Lobby has a K&S brass section! They have .010 and .020 but not .016 so when I run out of it I'll have to move to something else.
