The asphalt floor tiles look like the same stuff you'd see on the floor of a supermarket (and are just just like the same area aboard the Iowa)... were they from the 80's refit? If so, what was on the bridge deck in WWII and is it still under the asphalt tiles? Also, are the wood grain interior panels original? Again, the Iowa has them but the Missouri doesn't... unless they have been painted over on the 'Mo.

Jason (not to steal your thunder, Cliffy) -

The floor tiles are from the '80s - all such materials are removed during decommissioning, at least they were when the IOWAs were decomm'ed in the mid-50's. All the bridge decks from WWII-1958 were painted steel, probably painted pea green as was NEW JERSEY's. The bridge tiles were an '80s addition.

Wood panels on the bridge cover the original brass which required polishing - the 80's refit brought the addition of the bridge paneling (also on NEW JERSEY) in order to remove the need for upkeep. The brass is still there, you just can't see it. IMHO it's a disgrace to have covered all this up for the sake of appeasing the cry babies who didn't want to do a bit of manual labor to keep everything "shipshape". NEW JERSEY during the Vietnam Era commission had the original bridge intact - brass and steel deck. We DID have the green linoleum tiles throughout the ship in berthing spaces, passageways (halls), and messdecks. These were stripped in the '69 decommissioning process as were all wood paneling that adorned the various dept. head offices. The Enlisted Personnel Office (my duty station) also had some wood paneling and a wooden counter at the entrance - all removed at decomm. This also applied to the many stanchions and vents throughout the ship that were adorned with fancywork. All removed at decomm.

One other note on this subject matter - During the '60s, the holystoning of the teak decks was also a time consuming (but necessary) task. Various alternatives were explored - and rejected. NOTHING can take the place of actual manual labor to keep the teak decks clean. I don't know what they did in '80s/'90s with the mentality that was in place at that time.

So the interior bulkheads of the bridge were brass? that seems like it would cause problems...

I wonder if the bridge deck (minus the interior of the conning tower) was painted deck blue in WW2 as it was sort of an "indoor outdoor" space?

Asphalt? Do you mean linoleum? Almost EVERY deck on the ship has linoleum tiles on it. Ones that sees frequent traffic anyway. The Mess spaces, berthing, bridges, just about the entire superstructure, etc... The MAR DET had theirs painted red by the way in all of their offices and berthing spaces. In any of the electronics spaces however you have blue anti-static tiling all over the deck. Looks like linoleum but is a bit rubbery to the touch, IE has some spring to it. The conning tower decks are painted steel however.

The wood paneling on the bridges is only under the windows. All of it is removable (you'll notice a few missing) so you can access the gear mechanisms that operate the windows. I'm not aware what the other BBs have on their bridges as the only other BB I've been to is BB-63 and her bridges were closed that day for painting :Tirade: I'm also pretty sure the wood panels are veneer over some sort of laminate, IE read as cheap furniture panels

I'd imagine the Nav Bridge deck was deck blue when it was open (BB-61 and 62 only). No idea how they would have treated it once they enclosed them. Tracy could probably answer that one right? :thumbs_up_1:

Only other wood paneling that I've found aboard is in guest staterooms that are near where the Flag cabin USED to be on the 02 Level. They moved it down to the 01, across from the Capt's In Port Cabin in the 1980's at least for BB-64. BB-62 still has guest cabins there as did the whole class prior to the 1980's refit. Not sure how they handled the other ships. The Flag Cabin on the 02 became the Combat Engagement Center (CEC) because the CIC was too small to install all of the computers/consoles for the TLAMs and Harpoons, or at least that's what I've heard... The CIC was still certainly used and was fully renovated in the 1980's. Just not sure what its role was with a CEC aboard considering the CEC is where the TAO and possibly the Capt would be during GQ. Anyone know?

Every office I've seen is pure steel furniture and all of the galley equipment and anything to do with food is all stainless steel including all of the counters. I think the library might have some wood veneer on some desks but I can't remember.

You can't get a real idea just how big these ships are unless you go aboard and REALLY explore them especially below decks. Just love finding those hatches on the 2nd deck that go ALLLLLL the way down to some random void or bilge tank that have nothing but vertical ladders on each level. They go down so far that even my Mag Light can't penetrate to the bottom. THOSE are just down right scary and why the general public will never get access to the whole ship!

It took me a few months to learn my way around on the tour routes and the areas we have open and that only amounts to maybe 20% of the interior IF that. Imagine being some kid from the mid west that's never seen the ocean before let alone a BB and sailing for WWII after reporting aboard!

Bb63 has wood like paneling in the CPO spaces, the bridge deck is deck blue with some remnants of possibly linoleum? No wood around the windows on the bridge, pretty sure but can check my photos.

In the Kelly Quirk thread there has been some questions about what appears to be a removable semi circular rail aft of turret two. Is there any remaining trace of this and what might have it been its purpose?

Cheers. Tom

That rail I believe was a short rail and not full height. I think it was there to block off the training arc of the turret. I don't really know though. I'll look at the deck next week and see if I can see any signs of any studs or anything.

Thanks Cliffy!

Interesting that none of the other turrets have such a device. Of course the 01 level was more frequented by Officers, staff, dignitaries and politicians...

Cheers: T

Wanted to share something we discovered last week. Its a known fact that at least some ships have little weld marks that outline the hull numbers to ease painting. Well I can now confirm that BB-63 and BB-64 have said marks for their large shaded numbers AND their small WWII hull numbers.

I knew about BB-63's but I could never see them on BB-64. Ours are so ground down that you can only see them in certain lighting conditions. The sun was on its way down last week as we walked by the bow on our way home and BAM!

Behold! Make sure to click through and view them at full resolution.

BB-63: Look inside the upper part of the "6".
Image

BB-64: Look right above the "4".

Now all I need is someone else to confirm if BB-61 and BB-62 have the same markings. Anyone know?

-Mike

Hi guys,

I know slightly wrong topic to place my query, but you were prior talking about those bow pad eyes... how many etc.
What is your best way of scratching them in 1:350? Please let me know.

Thanks for your replies... ;)

Jan

Well, I'm not sure how large the pad-eyes are but I'd do them in photo etch. Lots on tiny PE rings with a pin (1mm or more), stick the pin through a small PE donut with the right inner/out diameter, solder of glue the combination, drill in the hull and attach the donut/ring combination. Very study and very detailed at the same time.

Smaller than an outer diameter of 0.3mm will not really be possible (~10cm/4" full scale).

Hi Cliffy B,

could you please take some pictures from details of the aft and heli decks?

I would be interested especially in the outside structures of the small storage room and the prior gun platforms at the stern.

Thanks in advance for your help!
Regards

Jan - I haven't forgotten. I'll upload some shots soon. If you have any specifics let me know.

Wanted to share a Memorial Day photo as we broke our holiday ensign and ran up it up the mast today. I snapped it right before noon so It's still at half staff, or as close as we could get it so that it didn't get hung up on the funnel. We had a nice wind all day so all the flags were flying.

Image

I'm not sure what size it is, I'll have to check but it's up there. "Might" be a Number 1 and if its not its near the top. That's why its on the mast and not the stern where we usually have an appropriately sized ensign.

Call sign, "NUGW" is to starboard and the ship's nickname, "WISKY" is to port.

Happy Memorial Day to all!

-Mike

Cliffy,
May be an unusual request but could you get close-up's of the flag lockers and the rigging connection points?

Cliffy!

Is there a photo of the top of turret three in here somewhere? I added all the stuff on BB63 turret two and guess three is the same, but have no photos of the top.

Cheers: T

Hi,

Thanks so much for taking the time to post these pictures! If, by chance, you have any pictures of the stern gun tubs, and their current contents, I would be most appreciative!

Thanks, and regards from a sunny, but chilly, Wisconsin,

Timothy

I can get some once the snow and ice leave us. They were actually just repainted so you're in luck!

Fantail shots as requested. Snow had melted enough so we were back there today.
