Above is the image of the Mikuma. Does anyone know who to make the rope looking thing that surounds the AA gun tubs?

For the ropes I would go to a crafts store and look at thick needle-point thread or very fine yarn. You can probably get something close to the color. Soak it in water and white glue, and then drap it. After you get it in position, use a brush to put more of the white glue and water mixture on it.

For the white bags, I would use two part sculpting putty (I use Aves brand). Roll them out, square them up, and apply.

thanks. does anyone know how to scratchbuild/buy the degaussing cables around the ship's hull?

plus, i've seen their blast bags colored in white (Mikuma above) and in yellowish teak (Takao below), which is 'correct'?

Check out Vanguard IJN Warship Models. This guy does some nice work, superdetailing his ships with degaussing cables, etc. Here's a sample picture from his website:



As for the blast bags - I think it's a matter of taste. I use Testors IJN Navy Gray for mine - it looks a little more subdued than white. The picture below shows the blast bags on my 1/700 Hasegawa Hiei:

For the white bag looking stuff, I am having trouble rolling it into the right shape. Does anyone have an alternative method I can try? Thanks.

For degaussing cables, use .01x.01 or .01x.02 styrene strips, depending on the ship. Larger vessels tended to use larger cables.

Or, Joe World sells a PE fret for degaussing cable but it's very pricey.

Both of these were some kinds of the IJN splinter shield.
The rope type was made by brass ropes ( 0.1mm or more thinner ) came from toys moter. Twist two brass ropes together to make string. Here is the demo pictures from my freind's forum

The white canvas bag was made by A+B putty.
1. I used ruler to roll putty lightly, to get a thin and round tube match the scale I need.
2. Before the putty became solid, used the back of thin saw to press around putty to get the tie appearance.
3. Before the putty became solid, the putty canvas bag can easy fit in any kinds of curve and surface.
