I would like to share how to paint ship�s �oil canning effect� which was adopted my recent built, 1/350 DDG-177 Atago in Gallary. First of all, it is needed to simplify color change by daylight as below, a part of simplified body plan. And I supposed that shapes of oil canning effect shall be almost same, while I know that actual shapes of oil canning effect are very various.
On the basis of above assumption, I mixed colors to make 3 affiliated colors as below. Used basic color is light ghost gray which is a Korean brand and equivalent to #308 of GSI Creos. I will call just original #308 hereunder. Prepared colors are light #308, original #308 and dark #308 to paint hull and out-side of bridge and funnel building of the ship.
As the first step, I painted whole area with dark #308. And, I am painting horizontal lines with light #308 using masking tape and airbrush to be irregular line like red arrow. The reason why I marked green arrow is that I attached a paper at inner side of masking tape not to be rolled up excessively for work convenience. Distance between a line and next line is about 1.5mm which is almost same ratio with real ship.
To paint vertical lines, same way as horizontal lines is adopting. Distance between a vertical line and next one is about 3mm.
As the last step, I overlay whole area with thinn original #308. The left area of red line is after work and the right area is before work.

Work for vertical lines is same way and color(light #308).
To make oil canning effect on below water-line, I prepared a mixed color as the left of below picture as �light hull red�. The right hull red is the color which was overlaid whole area of below water-line before work for vertical and horizontal lines.
Thin �light hull red� was overlaid on hull red. I tried to overlay thin light hull red as much as possible intentionally.
Work result is as below.
