Haven't been part of one of those (group build). What happens to our current build topics? I guess I need some "edjicatin'" on this stuff!

I haven't figured out all the time frames of these photos as of yet.
I have listed them as either Incomplete paint job or Completed paint job

January 1944. Paint changed to Camouflage Measure 32, Design 1B at Funafuti Atoll, Tuvalu.
At this point the dark color is dull black.

Incomplete paint job and the starboard side of turret two barrels are not painted.

Earlier there was a request for photographs of the unrep gear on turret 3. See attached photos I took this morning on USS Iowa.

Progress:

I am really liking this build so far. It's great to be working on something other than the $^#& stern. The focs'l's coming along nicely (IMHO). One issue I am coming to grips with is the size of this hull. I am used to maneuvering models from my workbench to the paint booth (which is outside), but nothing of this size. I whacked the bow on a door frame and damaged one of the bits (red arrow in photo). I'll get around to fixing it but for now I'm too angry at myself. I suppose this could be looked at as good training for my 1/96th effort. We'll see.

To those awaiting a Field Upgrade Kit for the stern, I expect to have the final design finalized this coming week.

Yes, the size of the hull makes crashing into things a real danger, done it a few times! Doorways and auto close screen doors a particular hazard.

Cheers. Tom

For those of you with a 1/200 Trumpeter Missouri/Iowa, I need to ask a favor:

Kit p/n F10 and F11 form the rudder post/fairing. I need to know the measurements of this assembly where it contacts the hull. Specifically I need the size of the rectangular post which fits into the hull, and where it is positioned with respect to the fore and aft edges of the fairing.

In other words I need the length of the fairing (at the hull), the length and width of the mounting tab, and the location of the tab within the length of the fairing. I want to create a corresponding hole(s) in my correction pieces to make it simple to locate the rudder posts during assembly.

Make sense? (I'd measure it myself but the parts for my kit have already been installed).

Thanks in advance...

I will be back to my shop Sunday afternoon and can measure the parts then - I'll post the results and send you an email early Monday a.m.

If someone is able to provide this info sooner, then by all means, do so!!

Randy:

The tab is 5.5mm by 2.5mm. The front edge of the tab is located about 3.8mm from leading edge of the rudder post.

I already installed the rudder posts before I decided to replace the rear hull, so the measurement of the location of the leading edge of the rudder post relative to the tab is based on a hole I drilled through the trumpeter hull at the location of heading edge of the rudder post. So if someone would verify that measurement please.

I am now trying to decide if I want to scratch build a new rudder post, or find a way to ground away the trumpeter hull material from around the locating tab to extricate the rudder post so it can be installed in the replace rear hull.

I used mine... all four of them. :no_2: (2 chucked after bad modifications and 2 used)

If I could offer a suggestion on the rudders... I cut the square tabs off mine, drilled holes through the post/rudder attachments and mounted them with brass rods, making a very sturdy and simple setup. You could easily mod them to be functional this way too, though I decided not to on my build.

As I had toyed with RC for a bit, my rudders are linked and functional. Plastic sheet formed around a brass rod threaded for a machine screw (small!) at each end and through brass tubes which end well above the waterline. Connected to a link, horn and rod such that they could be hooked to a servo.

Cheers. T

This issue has apparently been a bane to the 1/96th RC guys for quite some time. Now they use magnets to attach the rudders, leaving them easily removable for shaft servicing. Pretty clever.

Jason -> good idea. I may go with that. But... I'm trying to make this thing as "plug and play" as possible, ie., keep kit mods to a minimum (not that sawing the hull in half should be considered minimalistic...).

Progress update for the hull correction kit and, ironically, my own build...

I'd hoped to get much more done today but wound up vacuuming, washing, clay-barring, and waxing TWO cars. Pretty much the only problem with living in SoCal - you have to keep your car clean all year round.

Anyway, I have the 3rd version of the hull correction kit complete. This one is double the thickness of the one I installed on my hull, includes exit fairings for all four shafts, and installation points for the rudder posts. The only bad news - the entire kit takes nearly 100 hours to print. I will probably start the first one mid-next week.

I spent some time working on the breakwater. For those of you with a Pontos kit who have yet to discover this, the bracing for the resin breakwater is too tall by about 0.020". As I see it, there are two workarounds: trim the bottom of each brace (there are 19 of them) or shim the breakwater by an equal amount. As I didn't want to lose the nice detail at the bottom of each brace, I chose the latter route, and I really doubt anyone will notice it's 4 scale inches taller than it should be (assuming the original part was the correct height in the first place...). It took some time to get right, but I like the result. Photo below shows the piece posing on deck (not yet attached).
