Re: Calling all USS Forrest Sherman class destroyer (DD) fan
Hey, thanks for the reply.
I have both of the plan sets you mentioned. In my estimation the Sumrall plans are a good general overview, but not real good for building an accurate FS. These sets are the one's that I mentioned I had that I can use to pull together a set for the TJ. Between them they only have about 10 sections of the hull and they don't really agree. For a model in the scale I'm planning I'd like to have at minimum 15 sections. My Fletcher had 24.
Oh well, I'll keep looking.
thanks again,
Bruce

I recall one magazine per gun, two to three levels down. You had to enter via a round hatch in the deck of the above compartment. There was a step platform about 4 feet below on the ladder where you could stand waist-high into the above compartment to pass bullets and powders during load/unload events. There was an automatic loader near the center of the compartment that took in both bullets and powders. The ammunition was stored in racks held fast with removable aluminum alloy bars, powders and bullets stored separately on either side of the loader. I'm calling this from memory of 39 years past, so it may not be accurate. I do remember with accuracy two items: passing bullets/powders back and forth for hours on end and playing endless card games while at general quarters in the magazine.
Have a happy 4th...if you're in USA of course.

Hi guys, my name is steve from niagara falls ontario, I'm looking for a 1/306 scale plastic model of the Forrest Sherman (DD931). I've been looking for years and this is about as close as I've gotten I have a JPJ (DD932), I had both at one time, built and complete but my house got broke into and they were destroyed. Is there any chance the someone here could help me out, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Steve

Contact Roger Torgeson. He might have one.
Any ship larger than a Destroyer is a waste of metal.

What was the weapons and sensor fit of the USS Decatur DD-936 at the time of the Mercury capsule recovery? What model of main and 3"/50 directors (if applicable) were fitted ? Where were they located?
Any and all help much appreciated!

USS DECATUR (DD-936) in 1961 would still be pretty much in her as commissioned configuration. DECATUR was the first unit of the class to get the higher sheer line to the bow/forecastle compared to the earlier built units (DD-931, 932, and 933).
There are a series of images of her at Navsource ... http://www.navsource.org/archives/05/936.htm ... and at NHHC ... http://www.history.navy.mil/photos/sh-u ... /dd936.htm ...
Specifically DECATUR still has three 5-in guns, two twin 3-in RFG mounts, one forward of the bridge and the other just forward of the 52 mount aft, she has the Mk 56 director forward atop the bridge and the Mk 68 just aft of the second stack. (The director arrangement was reversed on the last seven units of the class built and during modernizations in the 1970s) I'm unsure, but suspect that she had received two of the Mk 32 triple ASW torpedo tubes amidships replacing the Mk 2 Torpedo Launching System Mk 4 over the side launchers by 1961. Except for the Mk 32 TT, this is pretty much the configuration of the old REVELL kit.
For DECATUR's radar suite, she has the SPS-6C and SPS-10 radars installed.

Re: Calling all USS Forrest Sherman class destroyer (DD) fan
Finished my USS Decatur from the very old Revell/AHM kit in approximately 1/320.
Used lots of aftermarket in 1/350 which just about passes muster. Plenty of scratchbuilt details as well, including the SPS-6C radar which I'm very happy with!

I think it's the only plastic kit available in this scale.

Re: Calling all USS Forrest Sherman class destroyer (DD) fan
I was the leading RM on the USS DAVIS DD-947 1965-1968. Best ship ever! Carried the flag for Desron 12. 1965 invaded Dominican Republic. 1966 first east coast squadron to sail out of Newport, RI to Vietnam for gunfire support. 1967 dispatched to aid the USS LIBERTY when she was attacked by Israel.

I'm building the Revell FS as DD-932 John Paul Jones. I know where I'm getting the replacement weapons(Thanks Veteran models!) but I need the name for the stern and am wondering when(if ever) JPJ used the MK32 triple torpedo launchers? Did those replace the fixed tubes?
Thanks!
Thanks!
