After a three year layoff, have restarted work on my 1941 KGV.
Does anyone know of a PE set that includes the square shutters on the stern for the Admirals Quarters? If got the WEM and Pontos sets and neither include these, which is a shame as the lack thereof tends to stand out on the model.
My pontos enhancement kit for the tamiya 1/350 kit has a very beautiful little bell but instructions are not clear on where does the bell actually is located on board
Right, i am doing this (KGV 1943 ) and so far i have left the deck color as is , but some have suggested it was painted over by that time .Anyone knows if and what color was used?
I have R.A.Burts British BB 1939-1945 book and on page 409 (new edition) shows KGV in a small pic with a caption KGV 4 February 1943.In that pic the deck does look dark but since it is black and white i cant honestly tell if it is the lighting, the wet contitions or the stain (if used).I know other ships of hat class had painted decks by that time frame but i couldnt find any mention on the deck color on KGV no matter how much i tried.
I know I made a lot of mistakes, but this is one of the models made specifically what I did. Maybe someone will help in the construction of his model. I tried to reproduce the state for 1941 just before the sinking.
I know that it will be nitpicking about the colors, but chose them from three sources by analyzing the materials. It is possible that something drew badly.
Here is the gallery of the ship: viewtopic.php?f=13&t=87681&start=60
Dick, Your information agrees with the information I was given by a survivor from HMS Prince of Wales. Then Midshipman Richard Leir was stationed at his duty station in B turret in the port rangefinder during the engagement with Bismarck. Subsequently, he was aboard her when she was sunk in December 1941. Transferred to HMS Exeter temporarily until a scheduled replacement officer was due to arrive he ended up in a Japanese POW camp after Exeter was sunk in 1942. After the war he ended up as a fleet admiral in the RCN. At any rate, he did mention that whilst in Prince of Wales they did paint the main deck with some sort of 'black wash" consisting of black paint heavily diluted with turpentine. He said the stuff reeked to high heaven and it tended to wash off with sea action. The photo depicting Churchill and two officers on the quarterdeck seems to match his description of the "wash" used by Midshipman Leir.
The image is fron te South African Museum of Military History (#1298), scanned from Arthur Nicholson's Hostages to fortune. I have not seen the image prior; you may want to ask the museum for a scan (and report back if they provide this service ).

Two officers?? Eeeh: I'm not totally sure, but isn't the person on the left nobody less than HM the King George VI? And the person on the right some minister or aide to the King? He isn't wearing a uniform, neither is Churchill, although he's suggesting he is by wearing a peak hat with a nondescript badge...

Sorry if this has been asked before but when did HMS Duke of York receive the enlarged platform on the second funnel? I have quite a few books on the KGV class but can't seem to see when that was done!

thanks

Not certain, but from Raven's book, it seems logical that it was added along with the extended signal deck in 1944 as part of the extensive AA upgrade and boat deck reconfiguration prior to her assignment to the BPF. She certainly did not have it in 1943.
It is interesting that none of her sisters received it.
Thanks Steve. My aim is to convert the Tamiya Prince of Wales into Duke of York, as in Dec 43, so that's essential info! I see you do bits for Anson and Howe, so I may in future be having some of them and other bits!
Looking for some help with the KGV, stern deck. I have the Heller 1/400 kit and Artwox deck, the problem being the deck is pre-marked as per the instructions for the kit with the positions of the Oerlikons and UP projector. Whilst Im stuck with where the Oerlikons go I dont want to use the projectors as I understand both were not fitted at the same time. On the attached links it appears to show the UP blast shield with some modification to the top shape with an Oerlikon behind it, in one of the photos a box type structure is also showing. Does anyone have a picture showing this from the stern or any information as to whether the Oerlikon was in a gun-tub or just mounted directly on the deck please.
