Hello all fellow modelwarshippers!

After completing the marathon ( seemingly) build of Ancona...

viewtopic.php?f=59&t=159133

I fancied a nice ' quick' build... and for a change a ship that would be well documented in plans with plenty of supporting photographs.
A 'good'' kit starting point and what could be easier...>
This self delusion lasted around 1 hour--before I realised that whilst I really liked the ship--the kit had compromises that I could not leave alone

Inspired by an old print of the Fred Mitchell Painting hanging in my hallway....

Herewith the start of the build of HMS Majestic-- or possibly HMS Magnificent or indeed HMS Mars...

The Victorian Royal navy offered me the pre-dreadnought Magnificent class which comprised of 9 (!) ships

Background history can be read here

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Majestic-class_battleship

The basis of the model is a 1/700 resin kit by Combrig models--

The model is evidently based on the Burt and the Roberts drawings-and the measures up them faithfully in every respect-...

alas as it turned out too faithfully! :Oops_1:

At the outset I realised I would be removing a lot of things before the build proper would begin.( and any hope of a quick build evaporated! )

The boat deck/well-deck should have undercuts in all directions-

On the kit this was cast solid-

==> ( this is an example where I would be very happy to pay substantially more
for a high quality multi-media kit with brass decks etc )

anyhow--the deck enclosed by solid boxes looked wrong--and is wrong--an easy mistake to make when viewing the overhead views-

-less so when looking at the cross-section in the WARSHIP Volume...

so the first thing to do was to make some templates of the basically good shapes

getting rid of the unwanted resin was not subtle or pretty

after making a fearful amount of dust with some flatening using drum sanders and other cutting tools
a basis for reconstruction resulted

with the deck parts parts offered up--( and the Q/F gun apertures opened up )
it all started to look more promising

As a distraction from the ugly business of grinding stuff up with a motor tool

and yearning for the subtlety of fine work..

I made a start on the numerous cowl vents festooned all over the ship.

The kit items were about the right shape--if a bit clumsy looking on the rim of the cowl mouth.

In real life these are thin metal constructions--with a deep and visible throat aperture

I decided to try and refine the cast pieces to emulate the real thing!

Delicate touch is required--as it can easily go wrong with too much material removed...!

Yay!

Another 1/700 build.

I am almost kicking myself for not starting to build Pre-Dreadnaughts instead of WWII.

Considering that I use them for gaming, the Pre-Dreadnaughts would require less room for daylight battles (We need about 256 sq meters (16x16 - or, scale, 25miles by 25 miles) for a WWII game in the daylight, and about half that by night, or roughly, in scale, 10miles by 10 miles).

But the Pre-Dreadnaughts have a certain kind of charm as well. If by charm you mean chocking coal dust, scurvy, and ships that were barely seaworthy.

But they just look so cool (maybe it is that Steampunk is so in fashion these days).

...awesome subject! Very well suited for your skills.
The Ancona wasn't a pretty ship, not your fault, you did your best, but when a ship is ugly is ugly no matter how good is the modeller  :heh:

This new project, with black, white and yellow is much more actractive!

Looking forward for more progress...

Dino

Thank you all for your interest...

there has been some considerable progress over the Christmas break

small steps--but important steps :cool_2: :thumbs_up_1:

I believe I may have solved what seemed to me to be an insurmountable problem with
this model- the sharp colour demarcation of the white/buff/white/black stripe

(my) masking and spraying did not seem to yield the crispness of edge line I sought

- I shall report back in next week when I get back from Germany with photos !

Best wishes and a happy New Year

Jim Baumann

I am looking forward to your solution for this problem - a very typical one for models of Victorian ships.

Happy new year! Guten Rutsch!

Ha! they have PC's in Germany... !! :cool_2:

having shot a few images before I left for Germany....

herwith some more recent progress....

The funnel base was of the correct shape and size; however the cowl edges and corners were damaged ( see photo below )and in any case the cowl was also a bit undersized....
The cowl was enlarged by means of the the application of thin copper wire using CA glue, snipped off in situ to the correct size with a blade onto a small metal block for a really clean corner

Attachment:

28.12.2015 281.JPG [ 77.18 KiB | Viewed 4755 times ]

Once the wire had been cut and filed, the gaps were infilled with CA glue in a couple of coats

and paint has been applied and left to setttle it all started to look more promising !

( fighting with German keyboard and unfamiliar graphics program...! )

update continues..../

( in the meantime I had affixed the brass boat decks, installed the mounts for the QF guns, as well as made the new fwd and aft decks as well as added some structure and doors underneath

( more shortly when I can access my photos on my own PC )

Demarcation of fine lines in 1/700 ... alas I am not a patient masker or sprayer...

and my masking efforts in this scale to date have always been indifferent and unsatisfactory...

I wanted and needed to keep it sharp and well defined, so I went back to my favoured and well tried and tested TL decals striping in various colours

https://tl-modellbau.de/TL-Decals_1

I sharpened up the demarcation twixt the buff and the white all round... adding black and white striping decals where appropriate to gain straight lines .

Attachment:
28.12.2015 382.JPG
28.12.2015 382.JPG [ 228.87 KiB | Viewed 4738 times ]

Once the first runs of stripes were hard and dry I added the black stripe ( according to Burt and the painting on my wall at home :cool_2: ) though blue according to Brian King (?)

...thereafter I added a broader white stripe at the waterline

Attachment:
28.12.2015 374.JPG
28.12.2015 374.JPG [ 228.65 KiB | Viewed 4738 times ]

The entire hull top- sides of the ship were now varnished with matt clear varnish to give an inter-face 'twixt the various layers, so as to inhibit damage in handling and also to prevent softening of existing decals when the next layer went on to represent the underwater red

no more modelmaking for a week...spending the New Year in Germany

but then the project should gain momentum :cool_2: :wave_1:

I used similar decals stripes for the waterline of a Russian ship recently. Good idea to use it as demarcation line instead of masking tape!

(British-type keyboards are a pain - always hitting "y" instead of "z" ;) )

Indeed Lars ! :wave_1:

I have also used the wider strips very effectivly for the clean and sharp demarcation of the buff/white on the
funnel sub-structures and also the cowl vents ´-

But the wider strips give not just simply a demaraction line,
but aso fill in most effectively the entire block in a verz satisfactory smooth and dense finish white all in one piece

More photos soon once back in the UK and at mz modelbench!

Happy new Year!
