Pizz-Ant progress, added radars to mk 37 and 38 directors as well as SK to the foremast. More rail and vertical ladders added to a parts/material order. Steve Wiper emailed my book finally on its way to the final destination. Will be good info for many minor details that remain to be filled in. Such are the items that give a ship a realistic texture.

The scale is 1/43(2* HO).

"O" scale is 1:48! Not such a popular scale as HO for the model railroaders as few people have that sort of room for a layout of that scale. Many years ago I used to scratch build HOn3 narrow gauge freight cars from the era around 1900. Not the wheels though!

Last night I added and painted all the search and fire control radars and used up the last of my current batch of 5H paint I had mixed. Steve Wiper finally got my Alaska book on the way (major Post Office screw up) and looking forward to having it in a few days. Should be able to start going through and adding a lot of small detail that does not show up on the drawings.

Progress a bit slow between skiing, hot dates and general Christmas hubub. However did finish a pair of paravanes (pair a' pair a vanes, would that be four?) and have received my Classic Warships book. Sent via media mail, which to Alaska means it is handed to some hitchhiker to mail when he gets here via the ALCAN. Photos always mean things to add and there will be lots of that. Thought I had ordered some three rail PE, but had not, the two rail does have it's uses but main deck and some more superstructure will have to wait for a backorder as the supplier was out now. Half of scratch building is figuring out how and what materials then making a false start or two. More unsatisfactory old work to be ripped and replaced. Photos do show some errors or ambiguities in the plans, or my misinterpretation.

Slowly looking at photos and adding small bits an pieces as clarifications come to light. It is slow as something such as a set of Paravanes takes a while from turning the brass bodies to making and assembling the "wings" etc. Or even a Pelorous for the bridge can take a while to turn and finish, twenty minutes? It all adds up, but it is small detail that makes a ship convincing.

26 ft Motor Whaleboats, now if I was Song I could probably whittle a pair in a short time, procrastinating on those!

Latest subject for scratching is the fuel hoses and rack awarthsips the aircraft hangars. These hoses have a coupling on each end and sit three deep in a rack on the bulkheads. We'll see how these come out. Appropriate diameter brass wire cut to length with a dab of CA gel on each end, the chucked in pin vice, further chucked in the lathe and a simulated coupling turned on each end. Has worked so far, but one never knows till it's painted and assembled! One done, now for another. Of course many other tiny "AZE" parts to cobble up.

Current progress CB1. Redoing the bloomers for the main turrets, turret three sports the new latex ones, probably will redo the turrets one and two as the latex when painted (like 20 years ago) can become brittle and crack.

Always something to add, in this case the wind venturi. The mini close pins work as a holder whilst the adhesive sets, however a bit more clamping force than desired.

Typical small progress, added flags to the flag bags, bulkhead details as I pick up the whatever is available from photos. For example small cable reels, davits, long fog nozzles etc. Just received some three rail PE so can make some more progress in that direction. Added outboard brass drums to the midships winches.

The 01 level 5" mounts (Port and Stbd) have interesting bent knee stanchions fitted with netting on the lower part, to prevent ejected spent casings from rolling off and beaning someone on the main deck. Not the easiest thing to construct but having a thrash at it. For netting I have some open net ribbon which I stretch, paint (for dimensional stability) and then cut to shape. I used this same ribbon for the heli deck nets on my Missouri and it seems to be decent for this purpose. Umm... Rigging, to quote a really experienced modeler "I hate rigging".

I did add the stbd side external fuel line and am still working on various iterations of the main battery bloomers. The wiring bundles on the sides of the stack remain to be done, not sure why these are proving problematic?

Thanks for the encouragement! The project is at that point where I am getting down to most of the items that I have been avoiding, rigging, PE rails, 26' motor whaleboats, external surface wiring bundles etc. Years ago I read about someone doing an Alaska which they described as a "festival of small detail". Boy did they get that right!

Currently assembling two Seahawk scout planes which were surplus to a friends Vietnam War era New Jersey. Painting those in the three tone camouflage blending the edges may be a bit of an airbrush challenge!

As I add more small detail, the photos previously look a bit bare. progress I guess.
