Sure. I'll re-post the unknown Mutsuki here to keep as part of the visual record, along with some others, including another Satsuki.

These pics are great! Thanks for posting them! And yes, pics of Satsuki are indeed rare...up until these posted here, I've only managed to find one pic of her (the one on Wikipedia).

Just a quick question regarding the Mutsuki and the Yūnagi (Kamikaze-class).

I know Tetra makes a Mutsuki PE Set for the Pit-Road Mutsuki, which has many parts that LOOK LIKE they might work with a Kamikaze-class ships (specifically a Yūnagi).

I have a kit of the Yūnagi, but it lacks one piece that would allow it to be fitted out as the 1942 fit of the Yūnagi: The Aft 4.7" gun platform.

The Mutsuki kit looks to have a PE part for this position that could be placed over a scratch-built, or modified styrene part.

But would the guard-rails of the ship fit (such as on the forecastle), or on the stern?

And I know that a great many other things would have to be altered, such as the TT reload Rails, which seem to have been moved from the Port to Starboard sides (If I read the thread, and interpret the drawings correctly).

But.... How much of that set would work on a Kamikaze-class?

Or is there a PE set for a Kamikaze class?

LOL, I've just gone through the same exercise with the RB set. The Tetra set probably makes more sense; it's certainly more cost effective. Outside of a small, generic Pit-Road PE set, there is no dedicated Kamikaze class photo etch set.

I think most of the Tetra set could be used, particularly the railings, ladders, and the platform you require. Compare:

Some Mutsuki class DD photos have been released in Hi-Rez by the NHC site. Those files are too large for this site but, I have resized them for posting here. Enjoy.

What is up with the forward funnel of the Satsuki in those photos?

It looks like it has stripes painted on it, but the white is all..... sloppy, or fuzzy.

You can see a clear stripe painted on the aft funnel.

I think it is some sort of optical illusion or light reflection. The #2 funnel stripe is not visible in the previous photo, taken just a few moments earlier, but that oddity is. My thought is that if it were paint on #1 funnel, than that paint should be obscured as well. If it were smoke, it should have moved aft by the second photo. My two cents.

Hi,

new to the board.

I'm thinking about doing a 1942 Yunagi. Is the Skywave Kamikaze model still the best starting point for this? I saw some earlier criticisms of the 12cm gunshield being overscale in this kit but I see that five star models make a set of resin gun shields with turned brass barrels. Has anyone tried those and are they noticeably better?

Thanks,
Phil

I stand by my comments about the PR shields being overscale. I believe I saw a recent build using the FIve Star versions, and I thought it looked really good. Of course, I can't find the link right now.

Yes to the Kamikaze kit for Yunagi.

Did a little searching myself and found this thread using the five star barrels and shields on a Mutsuki. Nice build:

I really don't know what it is or why it's there.

Oops, just found the following but, not sure if this is a Minekaze or Kamikaze class. Out the window with former opinion. Credit unknown. I think I grabbed it offf Ebay at some point

Back to analyzing this. I don't really have good sources for what went into destroyers. I wish someone would write an equivalent of the Lacroix and Wells book for IJN destoyers. But I spent a little bit of time looking at rangefinders in their book on cruisers, and it looks like some of the cruisers got 1.5m navigational rangefinders installed in their modernization cycles. I'm wondering if that is what this is? Most of them seem to be in towers, but some of them are bare. There is one aft on an unprotected tripod in the Mogami, and a pair of them on either side of the bridge in Tama.

Could very well be. In fact, it does make sense.

Agreed about the need for a DD volume.

Anyone know if this kit (1/700 Hayate SPW) actually contains special parts? I couldn't see any in the Hobby Search photos like you can see for some of the other SPW kits. Wondered if anyone had bought it and knew for sure?

Thanks.

Dave

Hi mates,
I just started building a 1/700 Yunagi as of August 1942. After re-reading this thread I realized the issues I´m facing might be of interest to some of you so I decided to start a Work in Progress thread for the first time. Hope you will find it helpful and I get some critical feedback on my thoughts from you, as many things are quite obscure about these ships. Thanks!

In a recent Model Art publication, Yamashita Hobby has announced a planned release in 2018 for a new 1/700 Mutsuki class kit.

This is very welcome news. Also interesting, because I would think that Hasegawa would be looking to release new kits of these as well in the wake of their new Yugumo and Asashio class kits. I wonder if that would actually happen now.

The new Yamashita Hobby Mutsuki late 1941 is now available for pre-order; pending release in October. Images from HLJ.

And, a link to the initial test shots from Yamashita Hobby's own website: http://surugadock.web.fc2.com/20180626mutsuki.htm

The bow looks very good, though there's that slight banana hull thing going on, like the initial Ayanami kits ...........

The test shots look really good!
I frankly hope they will NOT do a Kamikaze-class anytime soon - just after I´ve been struggling with my Pit-Road-based Yunagi for 5 months :heh:
Edit: final photos of my Yunagi build
