Re: Model Monkey Yorktown CV-5 and Enterprise CV-6 islands (
The design for USS Hornet CV-8 in 1/350 scale is complete. Here are the three Yorktown class island designs side-by-side. You can see that Hornet is considerably different than her older sisters.

Re: Model Monkey Yorktown, Enterprise & Hornet islands ('42)
Thanks, Martin and Gene!
I hope to have the island rescaled to 1/200, 1/487, 1/500, 1/600, 1/700 and 1/719 soon.
Features:
- fully assembled
- overall dimensions accurately scaled from the official builder's plans drawn by Newport News Shipbuilding & Drydock Company, dated April 5, 1940, adjusted for 1942
- details specific to USS Hornet confirmed by careful study of builders plans and period photographs of the real ship
- properly asymmetrical Pilot House, a feature every plastic kit manufacturer gets wrong
- accurately sited Tripod and Fighting Top (Hornet's was further aft than the tripod of her elder sisters)
- open Primary Flight Control "PriFly" windows
- open Battle Lookouts, aka "Vision Slits"
- open doors, ready for your favorite photo-etch (not included)
- accurately shaped decks
- accurately shaped splinter shielding with interior rib detail
- properly shaped funnel cap
- properly sized and located, open, scale 16" and 12" diameter portholes
- properly scaled smokepipes passing through the entire island - forward smokepipe at the correct slope
- delicate exterior electrical cabling
- heavy structural deck support details (light supports omitted, ready for your favorite photo-etch
- aft cutout for crane
Here are some closeups of the design:

Hornet CV-8 islands in all popular scales from 1/719 through 1/200 are ready.
All scale designs passed Shapeways design analysis software. [edit: all scales have printed successfully].
Thanks for all the advice and encouragement in making these designs!

Re: Model Monkey Yorktown, Enterprise & Hornet islands ('42)
An island for USS Enterprise CV-6 in 1/200 scale is ready, now, too.
It's enormous. It's truly "Big E".
"Big E" continues to be available in 1/719 (Tamiya), 1/700 (HP-Models, Mini Hobby Models, Pit-Road/Skywave, & Trumpeter), 1/600 (Aurora), 1/487 (Revell), and 1/350 (Trumpeter) scales.
Here are some closeups of the 1/200 design:

Re: Model Monkey Yorktown, Enterprise & Hornet islands ('42)
Question for anyone who's ordered these islands: How easy is the material to cut and sand? I want an island for the Tamiya and Revell CV-5 kits, but I'll want to back date them to pre-war. Just curious if this material lends itself to well to manipulation.

I have the CV5 island for the Revell kit but haven't started sanding/modifying it yet. I will be working on the 1/350 version first and hopefully this weekend I can get started. I was told as far as cutting to use a very thin razor saw blade while supporting the piece/area being worked. I also heard that drilling out portholes were possible.
I purchased a CentralPneumatic Air Eraser Kit from Harbor Freight that Steve mentioned others have used (with baking soda as the medium) to sand/smooth out areas of the mold. It cost me about $27.00
As soon as I'm able to get started and have some results with air eraser, sandpaper and cutting, I'll let you know.

Now what? Are you going to shift targets to HORNET, or keep working SS US?
I'll be taking a shot at soda blasting my 1/350 islands early next week. I bought 50# of the industrial baking soda, so if you intend to go the same route you can stop over and grab some white powder for your habit. Model habit, that is.
