Yeah. They'd be piled there for when we prepped for unrep. That picture was taken several hours before when we got called to stop a MV with suspect cargo. FYI the long box was a Stinger used by the embarked Beachmaster detachment we had. It always struck me as odd since we had scores of SM-2's in the VLS cans.

Just for clarity sake, not all positioning is the same with those crew-served weapons. While the responses that have followed the OP are correct in essence, they are definitely not static. I served on the USS Philippine Sea (CG-58) during Desert Shield/Storm. We only had one Bushmaster and it was on the starboard side, amidships just forward of the MWB deck. The Port side had a single 50 Cal mounted (same general location amidships). Small boat engagements were not what we were worried about back then (remember this was pre-Cole). Below is a picture (from my web page) I shot back then when we were engaged in a "hostile boarding".

Can you upload or email a larger scan of this photo?

Let me dig the original picture I took and then scan it with higher res. I originally scanned this for my web site back when people used dial-up, so they were pretty pixelated. There are a few other pictures on the web page from commissioning to Desert Storm in on there. Take a look if you want, I thinks there are a few close shots of the stacks and aft VLS deck (plus a Tomahawk launch)

Okay here is a clean new scan of that picture. I also found a good shot of the aft VLS Deck and one of a Tomahawk coming up over the forward stacks and one of the MK45 Gun open. Just shout if you want me to post em.

So ... aft VLS. This was right after commissioning which is why there are no Harpoons in the rack. Funny thing in looking at these when compared to most images today I have seen no model sets showing rails a full rail set around around the stack (that's for one of the aft Gas Turbine Generators). Plus there's the dark paint color on the VLS array itself and while the non-skid on the deck was all faded due to the years in the yard being built we maintained that color on the array the entire time I was on the ship (left in 92'). In fact looking at it now has bungled my color schema plans for my Tico build because almost every build I have seen has that being haze gray. Today's Tico's seem to match that haze gray schema, but if you are doing a period specific build (like I am, just after Desert Storm) than this brings up issues, at least for me because the Cells were darker than the deck. Now my memory is fading a little but we used Machine Gray on that six-inch perimeter along the main deck knife-edge, then a lighter Deck Gray of the nonskid deck and then the vls was machine gray with nonskid mixed in (which was black in the can). I will say that all non-skid, regardless of where it was applied (main deck, flight deck, etc) was the same color. North Florida Shipyards came on in in late 89 or early 90 and resurfaced the whole boat but the color remained the same.

So in the course of researching against my memory, I have noticed that I have yet to see a Tico model at either scale include the 40mm Saluting Mount that is located on the 04 Level (CIWS deck). Ours was just forward on center on the Starboard side. But I cannot find any images from Tico's. I have found a few stray dogs on other ships and am going to have to make one myself because that mount in central to one of the funniest incidents from my time on my Cruiser. Does anyone have any information on this (I believe its called the Mark 11 40mm Saluting battery) that I can leverage or a reason why it isn't included?

I had to come up with a saluting gun for my USS Oklahoma City CLG-5 model. I couldn't find plans for one and only found a few photos on line - and one movie publicity photo showing the saluting gun. From these I cobbled up a reasonable model - but by no means accurate! You can see images here:

These guns haven't changed much over the years. The WWII versions look pretty much like the latest versions. However, I have seen several different mountings for the guns.

Those are exactly what I am looking for and exactly what I remember being on my ship. Thanks so much for posting them. Fortunately (I guess) at 1/350 the size of the battery being so small allows for a degree of "flexibility" in design.

Currently fighting my way through the Dragon 1/350 Ticonderoga kit...I'm assuming the emblem displayed on the side of the Valley Forge's forward superstructure in this photo is the squadron insignia; any ideas which squadron it is?

Looks like the red shield and yellow number of DESRON 10.

That is gonna depend on the timeframe. The Ticos used to all be members of Cruiser Destroyer Groups, but now, they are glommed into Destroyer Squadrons or Carrier Strike Groups. It looks like CRUD Threes logo and a Wiki Entry says she was in DESRON 21 for a time but 21 doesn't have a circular logo. I have a call out to my buddy Stu who served on the Forge in the nineties before they decommed her.

That info would be great, thanks. I'm not locked into a specific timeframe, other than I prefer the black funnels/masts of the 80s/90s before much of the black was replaced with gray.

Hi,

A few “thoughts” about the Ticonderoga class cruiser

1- Mk-36 SRBOC:
As far as I know some ships of this class has 4x Mk-36 SRBOC located forward the SQL-32 ECM devices platform.
However, other ships of this class have the Mk-36 SRBOC installed on different locations.
On the starboard side, the 2x (and sometimes 3x) Mk-36 are now located on the same deck (starboard) of the CIWS and close to the CIWS, on the right side of the FWD funnel structure.
As the same deck has only space for the port CIWS (due to the FWD funnel location), the Mk-36 decoys are now located on the deck located bellow the AFT funnel structure.

2- MK-53 Nulka:
I think all ships of this class has now MK-53 Nulka installed.
Two of them are located on the starboard side news the starboard CIWS and Mk-36 on the right side of the FWD funnel structure.
As for the others 2x Mk-53 Nulka, one is located near the port CIWS and the 2nd is located on the deck located bellow the AFT funnel structure, close the the Mk-36 decoys launchers.

3 – Structure FWD the main mast:
Some ships seems to have an extra structure FWD the main mast on the same deck where the CIWS are located?
What ships of this class received this “extra” structure and what’s the purpose of this structure?

Timeframe is gonna matter here with the Nulka's. I commissioned the Philippine Sea (CG-58) in 89, left her in April of 92 and we had no NULKA system while I was on her. We had two SRBOC launchers on both the port and starboard side forward of the SLQ-32 and a ready service locker on both sides as well against the bulkheads, behind the SLQ. My General Quarters station was SRBOC Launch Supervisor, outside the skin of the ship, which is both sobering when talking about incoming vampires but awesome when firing Tomahawks.

Hi,

USS Philippine Sea CG-58 is exactly the ship I intend to build at 1/700 scale, in her latest configuration that includes Mk-53 Nulka decoy launchers, the Mk-38 mod2 25mm Guns, the Mk-141 Harpoons (Dual), the RHIBS rather than ship boats, M2 Browning Dual 12,7mm MGs, as well as new domes installed on multiple locations.
Right now the funnels seems to be painted in the same colour of the hull, rather than black.

Thanks.

Hey guys.

For years I had been annoyed by the unrealistic bulwarks on the focastle of the 1:350 Dragon/DML/Italeri/Revell kit. So I decided to do something about it.
The most effort was to count all the frames, and reach the conclusion that the average spacing between them was 4 feet in reality (3.5mm in the model). Of course there are some exceptions, near the hawse holes in particular: these appeared to have been set in the wrong place on the kit, but could easily be corrected in the process.
What do you think, is this an improvement?

For sure looks better Maarten ,but IMHO the frames are not triangles ,just plain straight supports(maybe a couple of triangular supports)
