Hi Guys,
Charlie,
The model of which I spoke is pictured on this thread...a little ways back. I know I posted at least one pic.
I will e-mail them to you.
Update on my 1/700 New Jersey...I chose to add some p/e watertight doors and I am not quite finished.
Looks better!
Pics soon, Tony

I believe he's referring to the models by a John Haynes of Fine Art Models. Their website is http://www.fineartmodels.com/.Poppop wrote:...Is this the reference you suggest?
Thanks, Charlie

Anyone see the NBC Nightly News tonight (Feb 23)?
There is a special military celebration coming up in Russia. I think they said something about veteran's recognition. Billboards were posted in many locations to inform the public. They featured a prominent Russian fighter and a battleship as part of the billboard.
Oooooooops... the battleship was the USS MISSOURI! BB63 in all her glory. The billboards were quickly removed. One official was quoted as saying that "we have ships like that, they should have used one of ours!"
Another one for the scrapbook if you can find a picture.
Regards,
Charlie

Alright my bretheren (and perhaps sisters!) What would be the best 1/700 Modernized Iowa class kit? My girlfriend and I want to start doing things together when we get free time and I suggested maybe building a model and she liked the idea. So not to burn her out or get her too frustrated I wanted to start with a smaller, less cluttered modern ship. Any other class that you think would be good for a starter would be cool too. Thanks for any help!

as in plastic in 1:700 there is only the trumpeter and the tamiya kit i think, the best one is clearly the tamiya! haven`t built one myself (but tony), i can also say that the trump one is a nice, relative easy build..and costs less than the half price..it`s your choice..and if you don`t intend do superdetail it with pe and aftermarkets, i think the trump one will do it..if you want an accurate model go with tamiya!

decking
hi guys , am trying to make the 1/700 trumpeter new jersey and i have one question.I am replacing the deck with balsa wood (as i do with most of my projects) and i was wondering wether the back end of the deck is like on the kit with that short of cyclic bit of wood around the main gun turret or is it all wood as in some fotos almost up to the end of the main gun turret with a long narrow strip of planking running to the heli pad.Am trying to make a modernized version 1980+ but am getting a bit confused when and if this arrangement on new jersey changed , if at all.

Take a look at these two pages and the pictures on them:

http://www.navsource.org/archives/01/62e.htm
Hope that helps some. I'm pretty sure after 1980 the USS New Jersey's aft deck didn't change much if at all.

see BB64 on page 8
Hi Guys,
Dear Guest,
The Wisconsin, BB64 had the most wood deck aft of all of the Iowa's after her modernization.
Go to page 8 of this thread for a look.
I have posted this pic and many others so many times now, I had to go back through this thread to find it.
Good luck, and I'd love to see some wood deck pics!
faithfully submitted, Tony Bunch

rear deck
desided to do the iowa at 1984 as in this famous picture. One more question : i need a good photo of these two empty now round placements for antiaircraft guns at the end of the stern as there are not supposed to be so empty after all. From all the shots i got in my small database and indeed from the kit itself these seems to be a few "boxes" short off ,lying around in places in them ,but somehow i cant place them exactly as no close up shots have been found yet.Any fotos or speculation about their nature and position would be helpfull.P.S i got my sis camera and i am visiting a modelshow this weekend so lots of pics including mine coming up in the near future.

Re: rear deck
I know on the GMM photo etch set for the Modern New Jersey, there are two fueling boxes or something that are supposed to be placed in those tubs. Anyone else know what I am really talking about.guest wrote:desided to do the iowa at 1984 as in this famous picture.

Tony, you have been working on the New Jersey in the time frame I am trying to do my Tamiya 1/350TH in. What did you decide on as a color for the tomahawk and harpoon platforms. In the picture seen in many books, where you see a tomahawk being fired and the front portion of the port side, with the ship moving to the left, these areas appear to be the same dark gray as the helo pad. The book I am looking at is the warship pictorial. Also is there really two colored grays in the helo pad area. They call for the field blue mixed with light gray just forward of the helo pad markings? In pictures this area too looks tobe all one color. Any help from others is appreciated as well.

Modern IOWA deck colors
All of the horizontal decks, except the teak, were non-skidded and therefore are the same color, including the landing area. With that said, the flight deck was often coated at a different periodicity than the rest of the decks, so there would be color variation. It could either be more faded or fresher looking, you can justify either. I use Gunships Gray 36118 for my deck gray and non-skid coating. When fresh it is hard to distinguish paint from skid. Typically the skid fades faster than the deck. HTH.

deck colors
Hi Guys,
Rory,
Here is what I chose to do. Just me, okay.
I painted the decks either: Wood color, deck grey or aircraft interior black, (all lightened with white to some degree). As a separate matter, the helo landing pad was painted a mixture of dark greys and earth tones in an effort to duplicate a picture of BigJ in 1983. See picture on pp6 of this thread, and you'll see a notable difference in the helo pad's color and the adjacent non-skid. Plus; a/c are messy and it shows on the helo pad.
I was never a sailor and I don't know whether or not the ABL and Harpoon pads were covered with non-skid. After studying many pictures, I decided to go with deck grey in these areas. I used WEM's "modern deck grey". I have gained some insight from plenty of research over the last few years; non-skid is used more and more as the ships get newer.
The boxes in the stern 40mm tubs are helo refueling stations. Doesn't is show this on your 1/350 GMM p/e instruction sheet? It does on my 1/700 GMM set. FWIW.
The New Jersey went through some "color and markings" changes after 1984. More of the deck grey was used and the Helo pad had different markings. Plenty o' pics to show this. I have Stilwell's "New Jersey", and illustrated history. What a GREAT resource!!! Books are our friends!
