Thanks, Mark! Per your request, the design for a 1/350 scale USS Shangri La CVA-38 island circa 1966-1968 is done.

Regarding a 1959 Intrepid island, in reviewing the one photo available to me of her in 1959, it is clear that none of my island designs match that island at that time or are even close. Intrepid's island in 1959 was a mix of Korean War-era features ("flat-top" bridge window configuration, etc.) and Vietnam War-era features (new, enlarged, relocated PriFly, etc.).

In 1/700 scale, if I were to design one for you, the bridge windows could be open but PriFly would have to be solid.

Remember that old Tamiya 1/25 scale Tiger I with interior you have the stash? Have some 1/35 scale Tigers and Panthers lying around in desperate need of an accurate motor?

For those ship modelers here who requested some armor subjects, too, the design for the Maybach HL230 P30 V12 motor is complete, has passed Shapeways design analysis software checks, and is available in 1/35 and 1/25 scales. Other scales are possible. Link:

The Maybach HL230 P30 engine was used during World War Two by German heavy tanks including many Tiger Is, King Tigers (Tiger IIs/Royal Tigers/K�nigstigers), Panthers, Jagdpanthers, Jagdtigers, and early Sturmtigers (Sturmm�rserwagen).

This 3D-printed motor is designed from scans of original factory drawings, entitled "French Army studies of captured equipment, 1945: General Arrangement Drawings HL230 P30", in the possession of the bureau d'�tudes de l'Atelier d'Issy-les-MoulineauX (AMX).

Here is one of several of the principal references used in this design, a reduced copy of a much larger scan of original drawings made by Maybach. The original drawings were captured at the end of World War II by the French and cataloged in 1947.

Back after a while...was focued on different things...
Reading about all those nice Essex Class islands in 1/700 I wonder if I have missed a 1/700 release of a angled deck Essex carrier, or maybe a conversion kit? Today I bought a 1/700 Antietam off E-Bay, was looking for this kit for quite a while. I am also after an 1/350 Intrepid but will wait for the right moment when hopefully the price will come down a bit.

Angle-deck Essex islands in 1/700 are not yet ready. I hope to get back to Vietnam-era Essex islands in 1/700 shortly.

As you know, Korean War-era 1/700 islands are now available but the 1/700 Vietnam War-era bridge window framing members could not be printed in 1/700 with the windows open. The framing members are too long and thin to survive cleaning in that scale. Only the 1/700 Korean War-era straight-deck islands can be printed with open windows. When complete, the new 1/700 angle-deck re-designs will have solid windows with subtly raised framing.

Angle-deck Vietnam War-era islands with open windows are available now in 1/530 (for Revell), 1/525 (for Lindberg), 1/500 (for Renwal) and 1/350 (for Gallery Models).

For a 1/350 Intrepid, rather than buy the whole island, an economical option is to buy just a set of bridge decks and PriFly, all featuring open windows. Link:

Please be reminded that these decks are based on authoritative plans, they are not 3D-printed copies of the Gallery Models kit's parts with open windows. Some small adjustment may be needed for best fit. The set of decks can be adapted for other ships of the class.

Yes indeed, a Mk.18 21" torpedo tube for PT Boats.

If no one could identify it, I was going to say that it was a "pre-war Flux Capacitor" or perhaps a "USS Nimitz time-warp inhibitor".

It is intended for the classic Airfix "70' Elco MTB", Hasegawa "PT Boat Black Lagoon" and Revell PT-109, PT-117 and PT-167 kits all in 1/72 scale as well as the Merit 1/48 scale "PT Boat, late type", to convert the model into an early type.

It can also be scaled to 1/98 for those who want to convert their Revell 1/98 scale 74' Higgin's boats to an early type.

Have you ever concidered doing 1/700 scale islands for the WWII Essex ships? I think there are not two that are identical, so there is plenty of room for 3D designers. Also, in addition to your already available 50ties islands...how about the other parts needed for the first wave of Essex mods...?
On your later 700 islands...I personally actually prefer having solid windows. In the scale open window frames look not too good, I rather paint them blacl or green and touch them up with gloss varnish.

Yes, I'll be designing WWII Essex islands in 1/700 scale but not until next year, probably. The design queue is pretty full right now but I hope to get to them after Christmas.

I regret that I won't be able to design features other than the islands for the first wave of Essex mods. I have no suitable, authoritative, dimensioned 2D references of those features from which to make the 3D designs.

One more suggestion...not sure if I am the only one interested...but I would love to have those domes that are used over mostly the quad 40ties when the ships are in mothballs. Both 700 and 350 would be a dream. For the Antietam kit that has arrived today they are even needed when portraying the ship in it's training role in the lat 50ties and 60ties. There is also this 30% build Hasegawa short hull in my stash from 25years ago that togther with left over Trumpeter and Dragon parts could be turned into a nice "sleeping beauty" if I could find a way to do the domes. 3D printed ones would be super great!

Some work was done on the Mk.18 Torpedo Tube's turntable. This is the lower portion fixed to the deck. The straight side is outboard, rounded side inboard.
