Please note that the left pompom is the correct style for HMS Hood with the barrels without flash suppressors and no shielding. HMS Hood carried 2 Mk V and 1 Mk VI pompom, but the differences are very small. You may adapt the sights a bit like so

Re: Pontosmodel 1/200 HMS Hood 1941 Detail Set
Here's a few new ones!

Here you can see the port and starboard aft UP emplacements. If you look closely, you will see that the angle of the higher sections of the spintershields do not align parallel with the outer deck edge. The curved upper portion is postioned a bit more forward than previously thought!

We think we have found a shape change for the forward two UP splinter shields as well. This one is less clear-cut than the change to the rear UP shields though. If you look at the photo taken aboard Hood, you can see that the point where the lower shield meets the upper shield is VERY far inboard. However, we know from photos that the shield "stepped up" much closer to the front...so this means there must have been TWO steps...it stepped up once near the front then again inboard. We think we see this extra step in at least one photo (though it could also be a segment of the pom pom mount behind it...doubtful, but possible). There MUST be two steps though...

This photo shows what we think we see (shape of forward UP shields).

In this photo we see the forward 4" gun emplacements. If you look carefully, the outermost section of splinter shield rises up as it goes outboard. We had already noticed how the inner section rose sharply up (and Pontos has already incorporated this feature), but now we see that the outer shield rises up too (though not nearly as sharply).

Pontos has already corrected this part, but here are some additional photos of the pom pom outcropping on the bridge...the inner shield is taller than we thought (its the same height as the forebridge shields).

Re: Pontosmodel 1/200 HMS Hood 1941 Detail Set
I agree with EJ- I was under the impression that the railing was more or less square up there. No odd bends or angles. It did not reach to the edges nor did it precisely follow the contour of the deck platform. Of course this is just an impression and it could be wrong.
Well, we know it was that way in 1938 (as shown in the photo above). It DID change a little by 1941: the starfish was slightly modified in 1940 I believe (deck supports/stiffeners to handle the added weight and related effects of the HF/DF office that was up there temporarily).
EDIT: of course I should note that the official plans DO show a change in shape to the railings. It looks just like you've created it Kim. In the absence of 1940/41 photographic proof, we must rely upon the plans. So, in retrospect I think you can leave the Pontos railing as-is.

Re: Pontosmodel 1/200 HMS Hood 1941 Detail Set - Add Bridge
I think the lower portion of the deck support is incorrect, as the triangular plate that is right-angled to the support should be on the right side, and not left as you did... Refer to the photograph:)Pontosmodel wrote:We tried to realize this area part.FW_Allen wrote: So the detail set will need some extra brass to replicate these shields!

The photo is of the Starboard side, while the model shows the Port side The deck support points inboard to the centre of the ship. The crewman is standing behind the Pom Pom shield.

Will the wooden deck be available as a separate component?

I'd say that will depend on how well the full set sells.

Unfortunately, I've found another problem with the pom-pom bandstand arrangement: there was an engine room vent located under the port/forward corner of the platform. So, the photoetch panel wouldn't actually fit once the bandstand was attached to the model's deck.
Also, that was not a metal bulkhead/shield under the pom-pom bandstand. It was actually just a canvas. Unfortunately, we only have a photo of the starboard side...there are currently no known close-up photos showing the portside forward area underneath the bandstand. So, we have no way of telling what the precise arrangement was there. Of course, logically, it seems very unlikely that they'd have blocked off that vent. So, the canvas may likely have just been to starboard of the vent. That's just a guess though.
Here's a photo to illustrate what I am referring to:

Did you see this post? I was afraid that it might have gotten buried due to some of the other posts that came in around the same time. I'm sorry we didn't catch these sooner, but hopefully, if you agree with the observations, you can add them to your detail set.

Re: Pontosmodel 1/200 HMS Hood 1941 Detail Set
Kim, here are some additional annotated images that might help further illustrate the changes to the UP and 4" gun splinter shields that were mentioned in my earlier post.
Please take a look and let us know what you think. We have few detailed photos, but we can see enough to suggest that the configurations were slightly different than originally thought.
If you disagree, please let us know.
Note: I went back into this post to fix some broken image links on 1 Dec (Frank)

The mainmast railing is actually correct...no need to change it after all...the plans DO show it as not being totally square.Pontosmodel wrote:Yep we know the difference,

The image below seems to support that; must have obtained it after doing the main mast...

Hi All
Hello Mr Kim firstly may I thank you for your work on the Hood kit it's a great kit out of the box and your product will certainly make it a super kit!
There is one request if I may on kit part L2 the splinter shield that follows the deck edge (I did try to post an image but the file was too big!) has an external height of 5mm and an internal height of 3mm. Would it be possible to produce a replacement etched splinter shield that corrects this?
It would also help those who wish to open up the area below the forward 0.5 inch gun platforms as if the kits plastic shields were removed it would allow better access for cutting filling and filing the deck without negotiating or damaging these shields.
Thanks again and sorry I couldn't post a pic
Best wishes
Cag.

My hat is off to Pontos for the level of detail that you guys will include in this kit, and it sounds as though you are putting great effort into getting this kit as accurate as you can reasonably make it. I can't wait to get my hands on it and then spend the next two years building it.
Do you have any idea when this will be available? Is this looking like it could be ready by the end of the year, or would this be the first quarter of next year?
I'm looking forward to this.
Thanks in advance.
