I'm sure your periscopes would be more accurate. I'd be willing to pay the difference. Maybe make it an option?

Re: Model Monkey 2016 Sneak Peeks
Sure, Walt, they can be an option, but only if authoritative, dimensioned 2D drawings of them can be found. I was thinking maybe some modelers would want some extra ammunition lockers, too, in case the boat they are modeling sported a bunch of them. The ammo lockers could be available separately and suitable for Gatos, also. Thoughts?
The forward railing is done. The forward top rail was wire rope (cable) on the actual boat, so that will be up to the modeler to make. The aft railing is nearly done.

Re: Model Monkey 2016 Sneak Peeks
Just a few shape tweaks and further details yet to go. I'll do my best to have the design uploaded for release in 1/72 and 1/144 scales shortly. Other scales as well as the design for Lionfish will take longer.
Hopefully, most, if not all, of the details seen in these renderings will be printable in scales smaller than 1/144. No promises.

Re: Model Monkey 2016 Sneak Peeks
After a few days away from home unexpectedly (a "life happens" health-related event), this design will be completed soon.
Hope those of you who have asked for it will find the design pleasing and within your budget.
Cheers!

The railings look very good! I hope that health issue wasn't serious, right?

Re: Model Monkey 2016 Sneak Peeks
Thanks, guys! After twenty years in the Army with three wars on two continents under my belt, I am a bit beat up, but definitely hard to kill.
The 1/72 scale design is complete and has been uploaded to Shapeways. It is being adjusted now to meet Shapeways' printing requirements. The final design grew to a whopping 52MB.
Unfortunately, no authoritative drawings could be found providing accurate dimensions and shapes of the periscopes. Therefore, they have been omitted from the design. Please use your plastic kit's parts.

Re: Model Monkey 2016 Sneak Peeks
Good news for Balao modelers: another 3D designer, diStefan, has announced he will release a 5"/25 deck gun for submarines this week. The Model Monkey 5"/25 deck gun project, therefore, is canceled.

Re: Model Monkey 2016 Sneak Peeks
If the size of the final CAD file is small enough to be uploaded to Shapeways*, it is hoped that you'll soon be able to have matching sized funnels for your models of HMS Hood, properly scaled according to AOTS drawings by John Roberts. [edit: DONE!]
In the Model Monkey design so far, at about 50% complete, there are already 3,873 rivets.
* One sure way to balloon the size of a CAD file for 3D-printing is to add a lot of rivets to the design.

Hi Steve, did you ever find plans for Belfasts funnels? I don't have the AoTS book so I don't know if tit has the correctly sized funnels in it.

Regretfully, no. Perhaps someone with the kit(s) and the AOTS book can compare and advise us what's needed.Admiral John Byng wrote:Hi Steve, did you ever find plans for Belfasts funnels? I don't have the AoTS book so I don't know if tit has the correctly sized funnels in it.
Not sure if the market will support designs for Belfast. Surprisingly, products for cruisers have not been selling.
PM headed your way.

Needs a second row of rivets closer to the base of the funnel....
> If that fails, the product will not be released until technology permits it to be, or the product can be released without rivets, depending on the desire of the market.
