They are two entirely different classes of heavy cruiser, so the answer is no. Everything is different - hull, superstructure, placement of main armament. etc.

Yes, Mikuma and Mogami are the same, except for small details, like the shape of the mainmast.

They are not identical to the pair of succeeding sisters, Suzuya and Kumano.

Is there any chance that the big red "meatball" on the first turret was painted over after these photos were taken, say in 1944? It seems like a giant aiming point.
Some of the 1/700 and 1/350 models on line have it in place, others do not.
Opinions, anyone?

Personally, I would think they would have been painted over by then. From what I can see from the few, clear overheads available, those ID symbols have been removed.

You can build a IJN MIkuma from a IJN Mogami kit or viseversa. There is two major difference though that almost noone will notice anwyay :heh:
The main mast is the main difference but small details thats hard to notice and the shape of bollards on IJN Mikuma they are bit "rounder".

I have a couple of questions about the ladders that I see on some models on the flight deck.

Were there different styles (A "step ladder", for example)? Or were they all the "lean-to" type?

Second, what color were they? Varnished natural wood? Grey hull color?

I'm also wondering about what else makes sense as detailing items.
Boxes and ropes are obvious, but were there any other pieces of equipment on the flight deck used to service the planes? (Avgas hose/reels maybe?)

Thanks in advance,
Chuck

Access ladders were steel painted grey (as opposed to accommodation ladders suspended over the side). Widths varied, but were always inclined unless bolted to a bulkhead.

I'm sure there was usually some kind of equipment and lines lying around while the aircraft were being serviced and prepped

Thanks but I'm talking about those that were on the flight deck and used to climb onto the fuselages, wings, etc.

Ah, they appear to be wood. You can see ladders and stands in these shots aboard some seaplane tenders.

Question, I was looking over the new fujimi mogami and I didn't see any degaussing coils on the side of the hull .. Did mogami have them or where they removed in 1943-44 ?

This time I solve this problem, according to this source is Mogami 1944 without degaussing cable

I appreciate the follow-up, but what is the plan based on? Actual plans, a photo? I have my reservations on this.

hi, mates
Retracing from original Kure Navyyard will be a solution to create 1/100 drawing. The original is in 1/96 though.
The modeler who had built Jyunyo & Kirishima in 1/200 brought model of Mogami to annual meeting of Navy Yard Assoc.( held 3 days ago here in Tokyo.) Have failed to take pics of other models, having been too busy with keeping on talking with members.

Hello Everybody.
I am getting ready to start my first ship building project (Tamiya 78021 IJN Mogami). Could you please give me your opinion on the best PE set I should get to dress up my new project?
Your answers will help me a lot.
Kind Regards
Paris

I know that there is a Lionroar and a FlyHawk set for the '44 version, but I don't know which might be better. Perhaps another board member has an opinion....?

Hope I don't get you too tired with all my questions. I can not find the Lion Roar set anywhere in the world. It seems it is sold out!!! On the other hand some Flyhawk sets seen to be still around. I am sure that most of you have experience with Flyhawk sets (for other ships at least). Is it good enough???? Should I go for it???
Thank you very much
Paris

Flyhawk tends to be comprehensive ànd top of the line. It should be more than fine.

Hello, i'm new in ship modelling and currently building Tamiya 1/700 IJN Mogami. One thing that i recently notice that some models pictures i see have half of upper deck use wooden floor while the tamiya model i building have it all metal. Which one is historically accurate?

If you are referring to the extended aircraft handling deck aboard the rebuilt Mogami, then the entire surface was metal plated, with treading on the interior portions. This colorized photo shows it to good effect.
