With the right kind of airbrush tricks, you can get them to look OK.

I am basing that off of stuff I have done on 28mm and 6mm gaming miniatures, though (where I have done planking on wooden shields, or netting or planking on 6mm Napoleonic Warships - I guess that would be 1/300 scale).

So, I assume the same sorts of tricks would work, with minimal scribing.

Question guys.. mostly Atma ... does anybody know what new destroyers in 1/700 scale is set to be released for the 2016 cycle ? I ask because the company 5 star models has released a series of PE sets for the pit-road models like the yugumo class and the Fubuki II and III classes and it's been tempting to buy them... here's the thing though .. I mainly by the newer kits because not only are they more acurate but the hulls have the degussing cables and port holes plated over already done .. out of all the things I can do, I just never can get good PE results doing degussing cables or strait plated portholes. I love pit-road but the lack of hull details drive me away from them :(

I'd be most interested in this as well, since IJN Destroyers are one of my favorite things.

Yes, and yes, though the included PE fret may be less than fully comprehensive. Not sure about that.

The PE fret on this kit is just the railings, the gantries for the torpedoes, the jackstaff and aft ensign flag post, and a few AA guns. It contains another half dozen PE pieces, but no windows, bridge details, mast details, etc.

Great cover art. Interesting, a separate lower hull, but no waterline plate.

I just noticed something about this kit that could make for some really impressive details, given that it is 1/350.

The Molded on handrails have stanchions that are high enough that if you sanded/scraped off the "handrail" itself between them, you could then glue back on a piece of .015" styrene over the remaining stanchions and have it pretty much be an in-scale handrail.

Funny that PitRoad is carrying them. A symbiotic relationship, I imagine.

Tetra's PE is so... Clumsy, though...

"Thick" might be a better adjective.

They just seem to be very thick brass frets compared to five Star, Lion Roar, or Flyhawk, though.

But at least there is finally some PE for these.

Thx for posting. It will be interesting to compare it to the Pit-Road version. Turrets look detailed with stiffeners, at least.

Tamiya is also showing a spray can form for Maizuru Navy Yard gray. Hopefully, we'll see that in the XF jar line soon.

Some better photos of the new Shimakaze (T) kit, courtesy of a Modeling News posting. Box art is that classic Tamiya style, nice.

That box art is indeed beautiful! The painting guide in the sprue pic is incorrect, however; by the time Shimakaze was completed, the IJN had done away with painting names on DD hulls. She never would've carried it.

Some new Shimakaze built close-ups from the recent Shizuoka show, courtesy of Harukano Sugano's (@EnjakuHaruzono) Twitter feed. I have to say, it looks really good. The complexities of the wind vanes and the compass bridge deck ofthe Pit-Road version have been reduced to a couple of seams. Tamiya also provides the cross bracing of the mast in plastic, which did not come with the Pit-Road kit, IIRC.

OTOH, Pit-Road's detailing of the doors and hatches seems a little higher.
