Photobucket changed their terms of service seemingly over night to hold all links ransom unless they're paid ~$39/Month.

Millions of photos posted by historians and all others in various forums no longer exist. PB might as well have just had a ginormous book-burning party.

Log onto Hyperscale Plane Talking Forum for links to other photo sharing sites, including free sites, and instructions. You might even enjoy looking at another side of modeling as HS covers all genres.

I sent PB an email voicing my displeasure (for all the good that it'll do).

Not true. First; IF you want to pay it goes from 5,99 per month. That is 72 dollars per year with 52 GB of space: [Plus 50 offers 50GB of Storage and No Linking or 3rd Party Hosting
Second; if you do not see your pics now that has to do with the ammount of traffic your photo generates. My accounts are not very active used while I switched to Flickr, but for example I see my photos still in use.
Wait untill first of next month and when I'm right you will see your photos again.

EDIT Forget what I wrote above, you are so right. Only the 400 dollar option sets you free from the 3rd party image hosting.

Switch to Flickr, there you get 1 TB for free....... ;)

@PolishMike: I already mentioned the PB issue in my thread here: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=165467
There wasn't any need for you to make a second thread about PB.

PB's different payment plans:
http://photobucket.com/pricing

Not worth it using PB anymore when I can instead go to Flickr and get a free account with 1 Terabyte (1000GB) of storage which is a hell of a lot more than what PB is offering. :)

There are always duplicate threads. I'm sure he didn't see your original posting.

I got my Ransom Notice at midnight last night. Their updated Policy notice is dated 28 June 2017. It would have been nice if they had sent out an E-Mail 30-days ago stating this was coming. If they did put something in one of those pop-up ads, I just ignored it and closed it.

My headache is that I have something in the neighborhood of 1,000 images posted on Modelwarships in various CASF forums with Photobucket over about the last ten years. All these images were more or less a permanent reference that kept me from having to repost the same image to answer a question and they are now just a Pro 500 ad. Even if I find another Image Hosting website I can use and like, it will take me a very long time to replace the images from that new service. $400/year (or $39/month) is a steep price to keep my images available. The only upside I can see over what I had only a few days ago, is no ads. But, right now I'm thinking of paying the RANSOM to give me time to look for another Image Hosting website with Hot-Linking and to migrate everything over to that website. I simply don't have time to do so TODAY or over the next few weeks (the summer is when I travel to NARA to research, sitting at a computer to repost images is in my mind a waste of time) to replace those Pro 500 ads in a rush. I tried Imgur awhile back and wasn't impressed.

Something for everyone to think about. An IT guy told me that charging for formerly "free" service, is a growing trend. Particularly for anything involving "Hot-Linking". All of that streaming is taking up more of the "internet pipeline". The free lunch on the internet is going away that ad revenue isn't covering. I hope that we can look for competition to get us a more reasonable cost associated with "Hot-Linking" service.

I would suggest that the Modelwarships moderators consider making this message as a "Sticky" above for members who need to find another Image Hosting website and for those who have services other than Photobucket to recommend and to answer questions about how those websites work. I don't know how many posted images are now dead there are on Modelwarships, but this is an issue for many of us that do post images bigger than the Modelwarship limited image size. I find it confusing to figure out how these various Image Hosting websites with Hot-Linking work without signing up to one and trying it. Knowing the pros and cons by those who have or tried them would be helpful. The Sticky can go away after most of us are done re-hosting.

Greedy little bastards...

In 1994, I had just graduated from college and was quite giddy about the development of the World Wide Web and Netscape breaking out on the scene. As a starry eyed young man, I saw greatness and huge potential of the internet. Massive free libraries of history, science and data sharing would usher humanity into a new evolutionary era. Then money came into the arena. BIG MONEY. My dreams were crushed. The web really descended into what it is today. An ugly, greedy market place selling every from porn to fake Christmas trees. Sure, there are still some good, useful sites out there, like this website. But, for many of us, the internet became a landscape of scams, ripoff artists and greedy charlatans.

There's a few lessons that can be learned from this whole Photobucket experience:

1. Nothing is ever free in life. People will always find a way to charge money for something.
2. He who has all the gold makes all the rules.
3. Knowledge is power. And those who control knowledge (Text, books, photos, etc.) have all the power.

Hate to say it, but we could end up seeing more image hosting sites pulling the same stunt that PB did weeks, months, or even years from now. Once one hosting site does something, the rest will eventually follow. Monkey see, monkey do.
IMO, it's corporate greed. Pure and simple. $400/year is way too excessive, IMO.

In response to this policy change by Photobucket, I am upping the file size limit to 400k and increasing the pixel limit to 2400 w effective immediately. I am doing this on a trial basis as I've been averaging 85% of my paid bandwidth limits. If I exceed them at the end of the month, I get hit with a penalty ($$$) so I may have to dial it back some to find a happy balance. So go ahead and try using the file attachment option to replace your images. My only other restriction is that I will not host images for other sites. So feel free to link to this site, but don't hotlink the images on other sites.

This should be highlighted - note that Tim is paying for the hosting here and is reacting to help other people out at potentially higher expense. Hosting and bandwidth aren't free, so I'm sorry to say that MrDryDocks dream was never going to happen, but it also means we should be more cognizant and thankful towards those that do provide things at their expense for others. TANSTAAFL and thanks, CadMan.

Just thought I would share a discovery I made.

If you come across a picture on a thread that has the PhotoBucket Plague, right click on it and select "Open Image In New Tab" it will open the image in a tab on PB and you can view it. It will only let you view the one picture, you need a new tab for each picture you wish to view.

It appears to be hit or miss, sometimes the tab opens and it still shows the no 3rd party image. No idea how long before PB realizes this and kill it too.

Not a solution to all the dead threads, but at least people can try to save some pictures they know they'll use.

I was never that starry-eyed.

But then I also was involved with a lot of people in the 1970s/80s in my late-teens/early-20s, whom I would discover were very evil, and who were like a virus.

And I have no faith in humanity.

I always, from the earliest days of usenet, recognized that the internet would likely be the doom of humanity.

But.... Currently all I have to worry about is just getting the rigging on all of my tiny Submarine Chasers, and Harbor-Tugs and Tenders completed. And then having the time to continue restoring and colorizing old WWII images.

Yes Jose, go to one of those posts and edit it. You should have a file upload option. Once you have the new images in place you can delete the Photobucket code in that post.
