You can find more plans for the Olympia here:

http://www.servicehistorique.sga.defens ... as/rec.php

They are in French.

For the last year or so I've been browsing various old books available on Google Books and Open Library. There are many interesting publications there, many of the older books published interesting line drawings of the contemporary ships. Here are some of the US protected cruisers that I found.

Thank you very much! I have started to built several of these cruisers, for others I have kits (Combrig, Modelkrak) - therefore they are very helpful.

Kits are unfortunately still missing for Philadelphia (same hull as Baltimore available by Combrig), Newark, and New Orleans.

Lars

P.S. the link to the first Denver drawing has an additional "t" (denvert.jpg), therefore it does not work. The file is there, because the link works after removal of the "t".

I work with a group trying to save the Olympia, so I have access to some pretty neat plans of the ship. Anybody interested in them for use in modeling? They're mostly TIFF files and very large so I can't just upload them to this forum.

If this offer is still open, I would be very interested in plans. I just got the premium edition Encore kit and will be starting soon.

Thanks,

Don

Has anyone ever built the 1/240 Lindberg kit of USS Olympia? Just wondering how it compares to Encore models' 1/232 USS Olympia kit.

As far as I have seen the Encore (ex Revell) kit is the better one.

Here you can see parts of Lindberg's kit:

:thumbs_up_1: This week I got hold of the box Encore (Premium Edition). The yard here at home is pretty full, but ... full speed ahead!

I am about 90% done with mine. My first ship model in 30 years so I am learning as I go but so far so good. It is also my first attempt at water. I will post some pictures tonight from home. For those looking to build though, I found it to be a very fun build but the plastic is old school molding (heavy detail and thick) but the PE really helps. I had some issues with the deck mounted free cannon stands. Very delicate and fiddly and the gun breeches were so distorted as to be worthless. I ended up scratch building those. Also, the supplied wooden base looks like someone hacked it out of a pallet with a machete or something... totally unsalvageable, but that might just be the one I recieved and not typical. Everything else was fine and I am almost ready to start rigging.

-Dennis

EDIT: Pictures added. Still a lot to do (rigging, weathering, some loose stuff to reattach, etc). I also need to figure out how to attach the boat to the water to fill in the gap around the hull... any suggestions?

Where does the Pyro kit of the Olympia fit into the equation? A friend of mine gave me the box top from this kit and the box is much smaller than the Revell or Lindberg offerings. Anybody know the approximate scale and general level of quality (or lack thereof)?

Paul

As far as I know the Pyro kit is the one offered by Lindberg today - see links above.

It seems the links to most of these are broken.
Does anyone have the Table Of Offsets for the Olympia?
I'd love to make a model of this ship in 1/96 scale.

I have the Table of Offsets, the Booklet of General Plans, and about a dozen more high resolution drawings. These drawings are titled in French, so I assume I got them from the French naval plans web site.

Unfortunately, the files are all between 2 and 30 Mbytes so I can't attach them. Contact me through my email address in the Forum's Member's page. Use "Olympia" as the message title. I'll send them via email.

The original Table of Offsets is a 30 Mbyte TIFF, but I reduced it to a still readable 1 Mbyte PNG.

Today 120 years ago, on the 1st of May 1898, the Battle of Manila Bay in the Spanish-American War was fought. USS Olympia was the flagship of the US Asiatic Fleet commanded by Dewey, which defeated the Spanish fleet and enabled the USA to conqueror the Philippines and make it a US colony.

I built Olympia using the WSW kit. The Combrig kit is likely much better. The WSW kit has some errors, e.g. there is a armoured belt (which no protected cruiser had!), the bridge deck has the wrong shape and the pilot house has the shape of the ship after the post-war refit. I had started the model long time ago and corrected only some errors: removal of the armoured belt, new search light platforms, additional platform in front of the bridge, but I did not corrected the wrong bridge and pilot house.

I mentioned this in the manufacturers forum as well, but we are currently crowdfunding to make a 3D printed 1/350 scale kit of the USS Chicago, starting with her as commissioned, and then some later refits. I have wanted a model of this for a long time, and I hope I am not alone in that!

https://outoftheboxmodels.com/collections/crowdfunding-projects/products/crowdfunding-1-350-uss-chicago-protected-cruiser-1885

For those who don't know, Out of the Box is a company that lets its customers either flat out pay to commission kits that they want, or nominate them for Crowdfunding. We offer flat rate commissions on model ships now as well. We pride ourselves on being the only crowdsourced model kit company. We've only recently gotten into creating model ship kits and we have two commissions in the works as we speak! Hopefully we can add the Chicago to our repertoire.
