One must admit that the new CV looks like a 21st century warship. The large windows of the pri-fly are extraordinary.

Royal Navy considers two carriers essential for F-35 trials

IHS Jane's 360 - 01 September 2017
Quote:
Two Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers are needed to keep the UK flight trials of the Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning II combat aircraft on schedule to allow the Royal Navy (RN) to declare its full carrier strike capability, according to the senior officer of the second in the class.

Martin Douglass, engineering director of the Aircraft Carrier Alliance (ACA) industrial consortium, which is building the two new 65,000-tonne carriers for the RN, told Jane’s on 31 August that they are currently “on track” to float Prince of Wales out of its dry dock next summer and begin sea trials in mid-2019.

He said the ACA was already applying lessons from the first-of-class build process and sea trials to the second carrier. This includes making improvements to the process of preparing its heat-resistant flight deck coverings and installing an improved F-35 landing light systems earlier in the build process, he said.

Second aircraft HMS Prince of Wales carrier named in Rosyth
By
George Allison -
September 8, 2017

HMS Prince of Wales, the second of the Royal Navy’s two future flagships being built by the Aircraft Carrier Alliance, was officially named today during a ceremony in Rosyth, Scotland

The ship’s new sponsor, Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Rothesay, followed Royal Navy tradition by triggering a bottle of 10 year old whisky from the Laphroaig distillery in the Isle of Islay, smashing it against the ship’s hull.

This significant milestone comes just three weeks after the first aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth made her first entry into her home port of Portsmouth as part of her maiden sea trials programme.

Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon, said:

Since the UK already received 13 F-35Bs, doesn't anyone else think she should already begin air group workups? Why is it that QE won't be ready for the F-35B integration until the end of next year? Do they really need to wait for both CVFs to be in the water to start RN F35 aircrew workups at RNAS Culdrose?

Queen Elizabeth to formally join fleet

Jane's 360 - 17 November 2017

The UK Royal Navy’s first Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carrier is to complete its contractors’ sea trials and formally join the fleet on 7 December.

The ship left Portsmouth on 30 October to begin the second phase of its contractors’ trials, which are focused on proving the performance of its communications, radar, and other sensors. Open-source AIS transponder tracks indicate that the carrier operated around Land’s End and the north coast of Cornwall during the first two weeks of the trials.

I suspect that most of the 13 aircraft will remain in the US for several years and be used only for training. One of the reasons that the carrier will have to wait for aircraft is that the project is being run by the RAF. This is a very unfortunate situation as the RAF have always been very petty when they are allowed to have control over aircraft for the navy.

It is taking us back to the time between the two world wars when the RAF had total control of the navy's aviation and the navy lost interest as a result.

I note that the article is very positive about the F-35 and makes claims about price reductions and compares it to the cost of other aircraft without stating what the unit cost for the F-35B is. I do not trust it.

Frankly no - just getting a first of class of this size and complexity through acceptance trials, subsequent defect rectification and then work up the ship's company to safely operate everything will take a substantial period before the ship is even ready to start embarking a front line squadron.

HMS Queen Elizabeth enters Royal Navy service

The UK’s new fleet flagship HMS Queen Elizabeth entered Royal Navy service on December 7 after being commissioned by Her Majesty The Queen in a grand ceremony in Portsmouth.

In her role as the ship’s lady sponsor, Her Majesty addressed guests before the ship’s commanding officer, Captain Jerry Kyd, read the commissioning warrant.

The iconic white ensign was then raised, symbolising the commissioning of the nation’s future flagship into the Royal Navy’s fleet.

HMS Queen Elizabeth ‘taking on water’ due to propeller shaft seal issue
By
George Allison -
December 19, 2017

HMS Queen Elizabeth is reportedly taking on seawater because of a fault with one of the seals around its propeller shafts.

The fault was first identified during sea trials. However a spokesperson said the ship is scheduled for repairs and the fault will not prevent her from sailing again early in the new year.

A Royal Navy spokesman said:

“An issue with a shaft seal has been identified during HMS Queen Elizabeth’s sea trials; this is scheduled for repair while she is alongside at Portsmouth. It does not prevent her from sailing again and her sea trials programme will not be affected.”

Worth noting the leak was at a rate of 200 litres per hour, or a milk jug every minute. Not exactly a big deal for a ship this size. Maybe if she was a dinghy...

The last time we were drilling holes in the outer hull plating to fit pressure transducers the chief engineer said everything under a cubic meter of water was moisture; that was a ship ten times smaller....

Britain’s second aircraft carrier afloat for the first time

UK Royal Navy’s new aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales has been floated and moved to her fitting-out berth at Rosyth, the navy informed.

In an overnight operation, sluices were opened and water gradually filled the dry dock, specially enlarged for the 65,000-tonne warship and her older sister HMS Queen Elizabeth.

The next step is to move the ship from her home for the past three years to the neighbouring basin and J and K berths, where her sister was fitted out before departing on sea trials during the summer.

Still no F35Bs slated to be on her yet till the end of the year.

HMS Queen Elizabeth achieves another first by embarking air squadron

Royal Navy aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth embarked 820 Naval Air Squadron (NAS) on February 5 in what is the first time that any squadron has embarked the ship.

The Merlin Mk 2 helicopters of 820 NAS have been working with the ship since she sailed for the first time from Rosyth in June last year.

Until today however, the Squadron’s aircraft, equipment and personnel have been based ashore and simply flown on and off the ship.

As the RAF are in charge of the UK F-35 programme it is not a surprise that the carriers are being left behind in operational capability.

Chinook helo trials? For possible alternate role as a Royal Marine Commando carrier/LPH?

UK Defence Journal

Combined helicopter flight trials speed up HMS Queen Elizabeth entry into service say Qinetiq
By
George Allison -
March 23, 2018

HMS Queen Elizabeth returned to UK waters last month following completion of Merlin and Chinook flying trials and this revised strategy has eliminated the need for separate trials, ensuring the time available on deck was used to maximum effect and avoiding a second voyage out to sea later in the year.

The initiative will ultimately expedite the release of the carrier into service, say Qinetiq.

The trials, conducted by QinetiQ and the Air Warfare Centre under the Air Test & Evaluation Centre (ATEC) partnership, brought the two aircraft together on deck for the first time as part of a cost-saving initiative negotiated between QinetiQ and the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD). The Merlin trial was originally contracted in April 2016, with Chinook added to the existing agreement at the end of 2017 under a new contract amendment.

Too bad the RN Fleet Air Arm has to wait until the end of this year just to put these F35Bs on the CVFs:

Majority of British F-35B fleet to arrive in UK this summer

The Ministry of Defence say the first 9 of the UK’s currently 15 strong F-35B fleet will arrive at RAF Marham in Summer.

It is understood that the jets will be supported on the move by Voyager tankers.

The new Italian LHD design also has two island superstructures.

Why does HMS Queen Elizabeth have two islands?
By
George Allison -
May 24, 2018

HMS Queen Elizabeth and her sister ship are attracting a lot of attention and one of the most common questions is, why does she have two islands?

Instead of a traditional single island, the carrier has two smaller islands. The forward island is for ship control functions and the aft (FLYCO) island is for flying control.

A belated post from earlier this week:

UK Defence Journal

Quote:
Supercarrier HMS Queen Elizabeth is expected to sail for the second phase of her helicopter trials tomorrow.

After these trials the vessel will sail back into Portsmouth and then she will sail for the United States for F-35 trials in Autumn.

Recently we reported that the first jets that will perform F-35 trials on-board HMS Queen Elizabeth will be mostly American owned aircraft but flown by British pilots.

The aircraft that will be landing on the supercarrier will belong to the Joint Operational Test team. The team’s mission is to build confidence in the aircraft towards helping clear the F-35 to make the legally mandated advance from Low Rate Initial Production to Full Rate Production. The RAF’s No 17 (Reserve) Test and Evaluation Squadron comprises ten percent of the test program in the JOTT we understand.
