Here is the beginnings of my 1/350 CV-12 Hornet project. It has started life as an Intrepid kit, a lot of research, looking at photos and a lot of help from Jodie Peeler has put me on hopefully the right track.

More images.
I am going to re-skin the whole deck to correct the catapults and cover the joins from moving the elevator and re shaping the aft end of the flight deck.

Progress has been slow but here is a small update. I printed a new section to replicate the roller door setup on the starboard forward sponson. I will cut the kit piece and join it to this so it continues along as intended in the kit.

That looks to be a pretty ambitious project, mate. Modifying a WWII-era Essex-class kit into a specific ship would be difficult enough, but taking one from the angled-deck era and doing so sounds like a daunting proposition indeed!

Will be keeping a lookout on this one. :wave_1:

It will be a long term project, I know it won't be 100% accurate, but I think it will be close.

Some shots of the deck progress. Re-skinned with .010 sheet, every tie down point drilled out by hand. I am yet to cut out the foward elevator.

That flight deck looks great! :thumbs_up_1:

How did you determine the location of all the tie-down holes?

Cheers,

Marijn

I am lucky enough to have a brother who is a civil engineer with access to a massive paper printer, he drew the whole deck to scale and then drew a criss cross pattern over the whole deck at 7mm intervals. The intersections were where the tie downs are. I cut the paper pattern out, glued it to some .010 sheet and drilled and scribed the details and cut to the shape of the deck. Once it was done I soaked the whole lot in water until the paper and glue washed away. I have actually removed the front section as I was not happy with it, I have some more sheet on the way to re do it.

Thanks! That sounds like the perfect way to do this.
The result certainly looks more perfect than measuring and drawing by hand probably would.

Thanks Marijn, It worked surprisingly well which is great because I have had to strip the whole lot off again. I realised the holes for the deck tie downs were too big for scale. The intrepid deck has them roughly sized at 0.7-0.8 mm which is what I replicated. Scaled out this makes them around 25cm-30cm in real life. The new holes need to be around 0.3mm to be more accurate.

I was not pleased with the first deck, the tie downs were out of scale so I took it off and started over. I chose to scribe the catapults and elevators on this time, I think once its in primer it will come together nicely.

Some primer on the deck helps bring it together.

Progress has been slow on this one but here is a small update. I have 3 out of 4 of the starboard sponsons on, the Hornet ones are very different and smaller compare to the Intrepid. I have added the aft roller doors and recessed that part back as best possible, it won't be 100% accurate but it's close.
*edit* I dont know why the images are upside down, they open the right way when you click on them,

It has been a while since I have had any bench time but got some recently. Here are the updates sponsons and the crane sponson mounted. The port forward doors have been replaced with the 3 roller doors that the Hornet has. Soon I think I will be at the stage where I can mount the sides permanently and then move on to the island etc.

I finally got around to getting some bench time and managed to get some photo etch work done. I have the Model Monkey Hornet island on order, that should be the final piece I need.
