Phil,

The forum has a "Virtual Ship Modeling" section where folks post information about 3D CAD modeling and creating 3D printed parts. You can ask questions about 3D CAD modeling/printing if you want to know more.

Hi Phil,
Thanks for that. I just checked it out, very interesting.
I must confess I know nothing about it so I tend to ask questions before thinking of looking for myself, lol!
I also find it quite remarkable that Aop could "draw" them himself in 3D on the computer. For someone who knows nothing about it, it seems quite amazing as well as interesting. So now I'm letting my ignorance show, haha.
Cheers,
Phil

Don't worry Phil! These new technologies are quite difficult to understand for newbies (including me!) I must say DrPR is a very skilled CAD designer. His USS Oklahoma City is amazing! You could see his works here in this thread: viewtopic.php?t=70810
I think you could learn tons of stuffs from him (and also others) if you are interested! :thumbs_up_1:

That is an overrated comment! Anyway thanks!

I am trying to find the right putty for the hull, as I figured out proper modelling putties wouldn't do for such large areas. But then my dad bought me a wall putty! I will need to return this and buy another type from the shop. Maybe an auto putty?

Another great master commenting on our build!! Thanks very much for looking in.
Actually, we're the last on the list of small scale ship builders. No complete ship under the belts, and we're just 15...still have time to fool around, though!

My brother and I also had a dream of building huge RC ships that could sail in the sea! As large as 3 - 4 m long. But as it proved - no material...and zero skill... Plus, our mom wouldn't allow something like that...Mother naval treaty!! :heh:

We haven't made any progress on the Lion for nearly a month...as modelling time just got filled up with 3D design projects...

As you might see in some photos, the current hull planking looks somehow wavy. We figured out that the Garzke and Dulin book hull plans are obscure at places. The specified spacing of ordinates were incorrect and will result in a completely wrong hull shape. The ordinates laid for this hull were estimated by matching with the deck edges, and even though this seemed to solve the problem to an extent, it still turned out bad. We are now looking into the NMM plans. They have hull lines, breadth lines, and body plans, which would be perfect. So this means we need to build the 5th hull!!!.....
:mad_2: :mad_2:

Before doing anything, we looked into laser cutting for the hull frames, profile and deck plates. This will save a lot of effort and time cutting them by hand (we've done quite a lot for the previous hulls!). The shop charges 20 Baht (or $0.572) a minute, so not an expensive stuff at all. Also, the alignment will obviously be better.
Hope we could get this build going and post more updates soon!

Hello leeyou31,

Just realised it's already been a year since our last post! Time really flies... Well, modelling hours got filled up as we spend most of the time practising the piano, plus summer academy attending and masterclasses, and, recently, preparing to take the SAT and TOEFL tests. Nevertheless, we did purchase the NMM hull drawings a few months back, and are now editing it for laser cutting. We are also looking into the DesignCAD 3D Max software to design a 1/700 Lion hull. We'll try to post an update as soon as we could!

Regards,

Aop & Aur

Hey welcome back!

I am glad that you are back on the post.

I can tell that you have been busy with working on academical stuffs. Well i guess you are turning into senior or junior year in high school. Probably going thru hard and tough time working on studies. I hope everything works well for you.

So i guess you are planning to make 1/700 Lion hull.

how about 1/350 lion class battleship?

Did u guys finish making scratch build?

Whether it's on progress or finished, please share us a lot of picture that you guys have done so far.

I have so many questions to ask about your project and please update us!!!!

thank you!! =)

Hello,
It's been another two months, and we haven't had the chance to do any thread update. We've been very busy with the GED Mathematics and English tests last week, which we scored about 80%; rather acceptable. Anyway, we figured the SAT would be something we need to worry more about, and that is coming up in about 10 days!! :dead: :dead:

Yesterday was a big day; the two of us made audio recordings of our piano repertoires that will be submitted to Indiana University for the admission's pre-screening round. The hardest part is that our teacher selected monstrous pieces for us to play. One of them is the Brahms Variations on a Theme of Paganini! Each of us play each book (Brahms composed 2 books with the same theme), and these proved to be the most difficult pieces technique-wise we have ever learnt! :faint: :faint:

Now let's jump back to our ship topic. Unfortunately, there's no progress made on the 1/350 Lion so far. But to count it, the only thing we've done seemed to be breaking a small part off the 3D printed superstructure! That simply broke off when we were trying to straighten it by bending, but this will be easily fixed...

Now the actual progress of the Lion...in a different scale.
Edit: We downloaded the free trial version of 3D Cad DesignMax Phil kindly recommended. He also gave us a lot of step-by-step explainations on using the software...many thanks to him! Unfortunately, the software seemed rather difficult for us to work with, and it isn't an easy task to make a hull, even for the professional ones. It requires a little too much practise to be able to even use the tools, so after several hairpulls, we simply let the free trial end by itself, and went with the old-school scratch-building! Nevertheless, we'll certainly give it another try with the software when we have the chance.
We have gone quite far into our 1/700 scale Lion hull keel construction. The styrene waterline and profile plates are temporarily fixed to an acrylic plate to ensure flatness. Then we attached each ordinates (frames) to the center profile piece from the transom stern to bow, and added the second level deck. Still need to do the same for the left side as well as adding another lower deck and the main deck on top. To make the solid hull, we plan to fill the whole skeleton with Magic Sculpt putty, as skinning with styrene strips at this scale will noticeably thicken the hull surface, and thus the hull becomes overscale.
It still needs much more refinements, but just to give the idea, here are the pictures!

Aop & Aur

i see now you are working on 1/700. however i wish you still continue the 1/350 lion class =)

From your idea, I started to working on King George V Class Battleship with 16 inch Gun plan.

I remember Churchill wants to put 16 inch Gun on KGV but then UK ended up putting 14 inch 10 guns on the ship.

With KGV Concept, I know Lion Battleship was planned to built.

So I decided to mix two battleship designs.

Pretty much Put 16 inch Lion Gun on the 1/350 Tamiya's KGV battleship.

Since B turret is small. I decided to put on one 16 gun.

Seeing KGV from Top View.

Well. It's on process. I will update more or make my own thread to share my experience.

I only put seven 16inch gun.

It's because i know British people seeks some uniqueness all the time.

plus. 8 or 9 of 16inch gun will be too heavy for 35,000 tonage Battleship....

I was thinking about putting 6 guns. but then it would be too powerless plus pointless too.

With this design, I am planning to make this Battleship into RC mode.

However, my company is planning to send me to oversea so I think finishing modelt kit + Camo + Put some Eching kit will be max work i can do before i leave my country.

Well.. Hope enjoy this too.

you have the room in "B" turret to mount 2 16" guns as the royal navy would not have gone for a single 16" gun in that turret. you have a type in that "350,000" ton when it should be "35,000" ton.

I changed 350,000 ton to 35,000 ton. it was a typo.

Maybe I will consider your opinion put two 16inch gun to mount on "B"Turret

By using Tamiya's "B" Gun turret, put two 16inch gun is not that hard.

But i will just go by with single turret though.

It's because i want to make KGV less powerful than 1938 Lion Class battleship.

Plus I have to request 3D Printing again but then i don't think i can get the outcome before i leave my country.

@leeyou31, your KGV project looks great! I agree with David that you could put a twin mount for the superfiring. It is certainly up to you anyway, as the single mount makes for an interesting feature too. For the 3D print parts, you could try uploading your 3D designs on Shapeways, as they make very high quality printing, plus great services and convenient website. It should save much more time besides being able to ship to most countries as well.

We did not halt work on the 1/350 Lion, but currently we want to focus more on the 1/700 version, as we made a deal with Richard Harden of Toms Modelworks to create a resin kit to be sold under his brand. The hull master is scratchbuilt as in the photos, and the rest will be 3D printed. Then everything will be cast in resin. Richard would be helping with the PE design, so this would be pretty much a complete kit. It is such a great opportunity for us that we would have the chance to do scratch-building, 3D designing and learn the process of creating a kit. We wouldn't say this is going to be finished soon, but we are trying to work on it, even though free time is becoming more and more difficult to find.

Cheers,
Aop & Aur

HMS Lion is depicted in the computer game World of Warships; they really get great detail on their models (e.g., https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tr19DkHuYac)

For an upgunned KGV I'd go with a 3-2-3 15" gun setup using the current secondaries, or the same 3-2-3 16"s with 4.5" secondaries. (don't know why I just said that)

I have seen the WoWs' new Lion class, and they actually captured her pretty nicely and accurately! However, they depicted the ship as if she went through extensive modifications like capped funnels, extra AA weaponries, etc. The camouflage scheme is very interesting, so maybe that would be something I could do with my models... :cool_1:
