Alaska CB1 in Measure 22 matched from the Snyder and Shorts color chips. Many small details to go! Need to decide on the best rail available in this scale and order, get some anchor chain, make up a new batch of fire hoses and on and on. Fire Control Radars to build up etc.

Ships bell, as far as I know was on the rear of the fire control tower, I turned one of brass, not mounted at the moment. Still waiting for my Alaska book which the PO lost for six weeks, eventually got returned to Steve. I know the modernized Iowa's had more than one bell. The Alaska was a little unusual in having the aft jackstaff mounted to the 40 mm clipping shack rather than at the stern, I presume to clear AA arcs.

Just saw in the new Meritt cataloge...Alaska, Guam and Hawaii in 1/350! That's great news...one to build acurate and one as a "what if" she ever got finished and comissioned...

Finally completed the Alaska after starting her 25 years ago. I stopped working on her in 1993 to build a model for the North Carolina Battleship Commission. I got totally burned out making the model and lost all interest in modeling. I retired two years ago and took up modeling again last year, finishing up the Alaska. All the radars and cranes were scratched built. At the time I made them, there were no photo etched parts available like there are today. Sure makes life easier.
I built the model as she appeared right after the war. Her decks have the natural wood look instead of being painted deck blue. After all the work of laying individual planks and being the son of a cabinet maker, I didn't have the heart to paint it. So right or wrong, I made the assumption that the decking would have been stripped of paint after the war was over. So to you purists, please forgive me.
I have since started carving the hull for the Missouri, also in 1/192 scale.

Mine is almost finished (Missouri) but has been on a hiatus whilst I got re-involved in the Alaska project. The origins of my BB63 date from the mid 60's when I had access still to the ship in it's nearly WWII configuration in the reserve fleet. Sometime circa 1990 I started to convert it to it's modern configuration but got involved in other things.

She is 99.8% done now, lacking base, case and rigging. At least we can make our own mistakes rather than having to correct someone else's.

My modern Alaska would be a bit like "skyler's" science project in the cartoon strip "Shoe" Working model of the Stealth Bomber (Empty box). My Alaska is in 1945 Pacific configuration. The modernization project is of Missouri. Many advantages to have access to the actual ship!

Hello all, is there any word on a 1/700 USS Alaska CB-1 or USS Guam CB-2? I know there are 1/350 kits out there, just would prefer 1/700 as that's what I am accustomed to working with.

Well thank you, now that I know they existed at some point. Been searching around and no one has either ship at the moment. Looks like it has been out of production for a while.
