Hi guys, after 22 months, the ship construction is now COMPLETED. I placed the ship on a custom-made wooden base(Also came with a steel information plaque), she looks generally alright.
As for the ship itself,I should say I did everything I can to modify her, but she still has a lot of problems about her painting, accuracy and glue issues.
However the most IMPORTANT thing I wish to express here is NOT about this ship, but rather about you guys. I started to build this ship as a total newcomer of both modelbuilding and this forum, during which you guys have offered me quite a lot of encouragement, building tips and tricks(although I tried but failed on some tips due to my lacking of experience and practise) and I deeply appreciate all of it :thumbs_up_1:
Anyway,I think I should just quit talking and show you guys the pics

Well, here's the kit itself. Combrig has offered a standard box packaging for this kit, with additional cushion materials provided, however the kit is not immune to shipping damages. A quite large number of damaged parts have slowed the entire project down since I have to repair or completely scratch build new parts to replace them. Futhermore, this cruiser does not left us with abundant photos or archives to be studied upon, so detail research and correction is been carrried out with great difficulty, and I intend to finish this ship with as much accuracy and detail as my ability could go.

Due to the distortion of the upper and lower hull. Formming the hulls together took me a great amount of work.

I shall be observing...

for a interesting take of a treatment of the underwater hull of a similar era ship

Much obliged,Jim. I could certainly use some finely crafted model as a reference. It is my first attempt to make a full hull model,so it's a bit tricky.

Just have the last steam launch finished along with hull painted. I replaced the original resin funnel of the steam launch with a scratch built brass one, also fitted are the main steam pipe in front of the funnel and a couple of handrails.

The brass barrels of the 6-inch canet guns are originally intended for Zveda's cruiser Varyag. Since both ships have a almost identical armament layout,so subsequently I used them on the Askold.

Just have the hull and all major parts painted. Some mishaps have happened during the painting process which further delayed the entire project. I am currently working on boat davits, cranes and all other miscellaneous leftovers.

Some updates here. Been busy taking my annual recertification exams so the uh entire progress is not quite up to your expectations.

However, I would like to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation to Mr Jim for his generosity and kindness in providing me with abundant and detailed photos and line-drawings of Askold which I have long been searching for. Thanks for your support,Jim!

With photos of a large scale(1/96) Askold model provided by Jim,I was able to indentify details of draftmark, main artillery clocks(firing angle and range indicators) ,bridge support pillars and I susequently added them to the parts. Here's some close shots of them.

Foredeck finally completed! As for the details,I add a piece of thread inside the ship's bell to represent the clapper of the real thing. Two telegraphs on the starboard wing of the bridge have also been reconstructed. With order levers added to both dials, these things now looks more realistic.

Its all looking good.

I like the voice-pipes on the bridge ! :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1:

Nice stanchions on foredeck

BUT... alas I spotted an error that is easy to correct
( I intend this as constructive critique!!! :thumbs_up_1:  )
Hope to help!

My only concern would be...
an error often seen on vessels with curved casemates
( and often seen US ships like Arizona etc )

The railings around the foredeck were wire cable ' thru stanchions

as such the wire would make a series of straight lines
between the stanchions around the casemate curvatures-

-NOT a continuous curved line

As wire cable cannot maintain a curve in that plane..!

It is not too late to correct :cool_2: )

Thanks for your dedicated support,Jim.I could use any ideas to improve this model.
Well, this issue did cross my mind several times during the construction, and I have came up with quite many ideas on the railing materials. Hair, silk, cotton thread, copper wire and so on...All of them are tested on a mockup bow(hurriedly-made) filled with stachions for effects. None of them prove to be satisfactory.
Finally I resorted to use a specialized shape-memory wire(Modelkasten) for my railings. Even though it is called "Rigging and railling wire" ,it does not fit properly on stanchions. It is highly resistant to bending(It can only be permanently bent unless extreme force is applied),and cannot negotiate through tight turns.
I m still looking for alternative material(soft enough) to use on the stanchions but I still cant find any. So uh,currently this is the best I've got.

Sorry to make you more work...!
The modelkaste wire --by its nature of memory wire is stiff
for this model I would suggest it is not the right stuff

Now helpfully-- the real thing had ' droopy' cable railing--

ie ==> it was not dead straight in any photos of the real ship I have seen

Attachment:
askold11.jpg

So I would suggest --if you can

snip the modelkasten wire in situ and remove.

Replace with very fine soft pliable copper wire ( perhaps in shorter sections joined 'in' the stanchion ball
to avoid damage whilst trying to thread..(!) .
Once glued you can induce the gentle bend with small tweezers

OR... for the flexible rails fwd --I would use maybe stretched sprue-- I have used this for rails also--very very fine and easy to use

and is easily installed without any danger of straining the stanchions

here is my step-by-step of making and using stretched sprue-
- use white sprue for your purpose--needs less paint and stays thinner! :thumbs_up_1:

[quote="JIM BAUMANN"]Its all looking good.

Hi,every one,and Jim. I caught a severe cold recently and have been feeling under the weather since then, so uh my work was halted subsequently. However I was able to get back to my work bench and recommence the Build after I felt a little better.
The progress is as slow as usual, but I managed to build some small parts.

Jim,I have again tested the wiring methods that you taught me in this post, but the sprue-streching thing...Well, I haven't got a satisfied results. I guess I'll have to try a dozen more times to get this right. Right now I have to put the railing things on hold for some while and focus on other stuffs that my current experience could come in handy.

Here are some updates:
1.Major deckhouse and cowl vents are fitted to the hull. Some details such as the "Conveyer Beams"? and storm guard rails are added to the vertical sides of the deckhouses.
(I suppose this "Converyer Beam" thing were used to transport gun projectiles to each main 152mm Canet gun, however these beams are not completely straight and level along its length, also no visible pully system can be seen on the real ship, which make my speculation highly doubtful.)
2.Some boats have been reconstructed. the color of the original ones differ far from the actual boats that she carried.
3.Have all the 75cm searchlights and their platforms scratchbuilt, with the mahagony footplate added under the searchlight.(As seen on the 1/96 scale model). The compass platform is also the case. (The original resin parts are way too clumsy)
3.An auxiliary engine order telegraph is added to the top side of the pilot house. I'm not quite sure of the number of actual navigational apparatus installed on top of the wheelhouse. What is visible and apparent is the lone binnacle. So I decided to add a EOT purily for aesthetic reasons. So the entire bridge could look a little more vivid but not too clustered.

70 percent completed. Here're some more updates.
1.All copper deck batten strips have been laid according to the original deck plan. (I am not sure what these metal strips were intended for. I assume they were used to fasten and secure linoleum deck tiles similiar to IJN warships)
2.All conveyer belts made from scratch have also been fitted to the topside of each deckhouses.
3.Bitts,wrenches, sternstaff and hatches are fitted to the stern.
4.Several cutters and a steam launch have been fitted to their corresponding davits. I added some pully system onto the steam launch davits according to the factory plan.
5.The conveyer belts were made from ABS strips(for modelling use),so they have a strong tendency to twist and buckle once the workbench temperature changes. So I have no choice but to reinforce them with drilled-in post(bond with the deck with CA glue) to provide additional bracing and support. The final result is quite good. All the posts are well hidden if all deck fittings and deckhouses are properly installed.
I still havent figured out a way to solve the railling problem. Considering leave the problem to the last.

The emergency steering station has been added. The binnacle was salvaged from my Bayan kit.The telemotor is scrap part found in my ship junkyard.Only the wheel is the PE part that comes from the original Askold kit.
